Several Directors In Contention For X-Men: First Class?

Apparently Mathew Vaughan has passed on the project, and Fox are looking for one of these guys to bring the teeny bopper mutants of X-Men: First Class to the screen...

As Josh reported yesterday Vaughan was offered the directing gig for First Class, but according to THR Blog he has passed(possibly a [frick] you over X3?) and Fox are now looking at Daniel Espinosa( the Swedish director behind the European crime thriller Snabba Cash)..

.."First Class," meanwhile, is a franchise reboot of Fox's "X-Men" movies, focusing on teens learning to use their mutant superpowers. Espinosa is one of several directors Singer and Fox are meeting with, but the fact that he even is in contention speaks to the swiftness and height of his rise. (Reports that "Kick-Ass" director Matthew Vaughn is going to direct the project are incorrect; he passed days ago. Rupert Sanders also is no longer in contention.)

It seems Fox are really scrambling for someone at this point. Cinematical report the following..

Reportedly, Fox is now looking at Louis Leterrier (who could use it to nurse his wounds over not getting The Avengers), Jonathan Mostow, Daniel Espinosa, and Rupert Sanders. Timur Bekmambetov, David Slade, and Carl Erick Rinsch are also in consideration. Perhaps it might be easier to make a list who isn't up for the job!

If Sanders(A rookie director with projects in development) has indeed passed and these names are in contention, my vote goes to either Slade(30 Days Of Night, Hard Candy) or Bekmanbetov. I wasn't a fan of Wanted at all but I did like Nightwatch and I think his style would lend some originality to the proceedings. Keeping in mind that this movie will have to go a long way to impress a lot of us anyway, who do you think would be the best fit?

it would be great if directors boycott :D give the rights back to marvel! x-men is one of marvel's biggest worlds yet to be seen on film. a bunch of mutants in a forest doesn't cut it.

At this point I honestly don't mind either way. I would like to see a couple more X movies with Jackman as Wolverine..but short of that [frick] em. I'm not sure First Class will be successful no matter what, at least for me, I just don't think the school days of Cyc, Beast etc is very interesting. But it would be nice to see it done well too. Just keep LL away from it!

i would rather marvel get the rights back and remake this. but since they do not give it to someone who can make a great story driven films with really good characters development, and effects. louise lettier should do the return of the hulk.i want to know why beast was a human in x-2 and blue in x-3? and what ever happened to night crawler, and if gambit was in wolverine why he was never in x-1,2,or 3?and why none of the real X-MEN never really got any story in any of the film? MARVEL save us.

Just REBOOT the sucker!!!!!!!!!!

This needs it much more than SPIDER-MAN & DAREDEVIL ffs!

[frick]ing FOX, oh and SONY! : P

(They can still make their WOLVERINE 2 and DEADPOOL, less X-connected the better on both cases).

People @ seriously, its kinda MARVEL's own fault they still have the rights lol!

it might have been marvel's mistake in hindsight, but that's only because studios they trusted made trash out of their properties. that's hardly their fault. they had to start from somewhere until they had enough to finance their own film studio and protect other properties.

My vote out of those guys goes to David Slade
The guy can make a pretty god story driven movie
and through in some more action than usual and we'd get one hell of an X-Men movie xD

If Leterier touches this movie I'm not going to watch it!
Yeah Hulk was good but I'm pretty sure that was only because of Edward Norton :P

It doesn't really say if Sanders passed or was dismissed from contention. If Sanders "passed" on this (a film that could have given him great recognition) then the script is probably as big a mess as X-3 and any expectations I had for this film were pointless.

I'm fine with rebooting the x men franchise but I do not want to see the school days filled with teen angst. I want an action movie using one of the great storylines from the comics. I want to go to a superhero movie and see something super for once.

" strip EVERY character of all the traits & guirks that made them popular in the first place!"

I don't think they did that at all. In fact they managed to remain very true to the essence of the characters for the most part. They changed some things sure but thats movies for ya. Who would be your choice for cast/director magic8?

I just found out that Paul WS Anderson was offered the first X-Men movie but he turned it down to do Event Horizon instead! It then went to Vaughn, then Singer.

@flames-But cyclops' origin is WITH the X-Men.

Anyway I'm really hoping that production falls through and that they take too long to make the film and Marvel gets the rights back..that would be excellent. That way we can see actual costumes instead of gay black leather and see characters the way they were supposed to be played.

Same goes for Spider-Man, hope that reboot falls through aswell.

OMG could you imagine how cool it would be to see a Marvel Studios only reboot of Spider-Man and X-Men in the same year?!?! Amazing...

Temuera Morrison is interesting..not so much Scott Caan! Yeah he wasn't perfect, but he played a version of Wolverine. He has been portrayed by many different writers many different ways, sure there is always the berserker rage and the grumpiness, but if you think Wolvie was never brooding in the comics you need to read more of em! Plus, Jackman didn't even brood that much in the movies, he had the sense of humor and the charisma that Wolvie has in the comics, at least imo. Wolvie has been written as a nutcase, a borderline psycho and a violent bastard but he has NEVER been a morally ambiguous character. At base he was always a hero ands had a strong moral code. Jackman played teh best Wolverine he could under pg13 rules.

is it a reboot or a prequal
jimthefan
jimthefan - 5/2/2010, 9:05 AM
they never announced it, so thats has alot to do with whos gonna direct it

Yea, i thought it was a prequel not a reboot.
jimthefan
jimthefan - 5/2/2010, 9:08 AM
and they cant have a reboot with a wolverine movie floating around that has to do with the past movie, it would just get to rediculious and somepoint. they should just make the deadpool and wolverine sequal and leave x-men until those 2 are finished
jimthefan
jimthefan - 5/2/2010, 9:10 AM
a prequel is pointless thats why nobody wants to direct it

Sucks MARVEL hasn't gotten their X-Men, Spider-Man, Fantastic 4, Daredevil, Blade, etc... back in their hands. Only MARVEL can reboot all these films & have it done right! I would LOVE to see 'X-Men: First Class' as a reboot but not by FOX. That company kills dreams. Let MARVEL have their rights back so we can see our beloved characters done right.

Well, with Vaughn out of the picture I find it hard to like the look of any of those mentioned above..! Leterrier maybe? (and that's only because I'm not too familiar with the rest of them! ) However, I think he's far from being the right guy for this sort of movie regardless of how good The Incredible Hulk was! Either way, like the high school Spider-Man reboot I have little to no interest in this movie to be honest!

Anyway, nice find ROR and cheers for the mention! :)

the only origins story i want is one that comes from marvel. i mean look at wolverine borigins! that shows how "well" they treat an origin. i hope every director out there just boycott this movie to not be made till marvel get the rights back. >:(
