Bond 23 Going Into Production Summer 2011?

While reporting on the fact that a movie version of The Hunger Games trilogy of novels is gearing up for production, Deadline.com notes that original director Sam Mendes has dropped out of the production and the reason is that he's clearing his slate for Bond 23.

Writes Deadline, "Mendes bowed out of contention last Friday, and I’m told it was because the MGM picture is clearing up and it looks like production on 007 could begin by late summer or early fall, 2011 with Mendes at the helm and Daniel Craig back in the Aston Martin."

That should be something of a relief to 007 fans and another sign of how crowded summer 2012 is really getting to be (with, among many others, Star Trek 2 and The Avengers coming out during that period as well).

On The Hunger Games front, word is that Gary Ross will direct the first installment based on the books by Suzanne Collins. Deadline describes that book series as follows: "The Hunger Games takes place in the futuristic ruins of North America, which crumbled and was replaced by a Capitol and 12 districts. Each district is forced to supply 2 teenagers, between 12 and 18. They participate in The Hunger Games, a televised reality series that pits the contestants against one another in a battle to the death. The heroine is 16-year old Katniss Everdeen, a skilled hunter who’s adept with a bow and arrow. She replaces her younger sister, who was chosen in a lottery. She is joined by a baker's son who is also chosen from her dirt poor home district. The subject matter is dark, but book has become a juggernaut: the final installment, Mockingjay, has sold over 450,000 since being published August 24 by Scholastic."

good find ed. finally. they need to hurry up and get there crap together at mgm before craig gets frustrated and moves on. yes quantum of solace was a bit of a letdown but casino royale is my favorite bond pick of all time. here's hoping its more like that.

I'm so disappointed that Mendes chose to do Bond and leave Preacher in limbo. Even if it picks up another director (which its rumoured to have done) he would have been perfect I think. Any action orientated director can throw a Bond movie together for God's sake! Give it to Bay!;)

Thank you for this news Ed! I love the past two movies (especially as the tone was a lot closer to the books) and it's a relief to think that they're going to make another one before we end up with another reboot and the story started in Casino Royale never gets concluded!

Please God, do not give it to Bay. The action in Quantum of Solace was edited badly enough (I like the movie overall), I definitely don't want Mr. Film-Giant-Robots-Fighting-With-Super-Close-Up-Shaky-Cam anywhere near Bond. Sam Mendes will probably make a great Bond film, and I'm glad Daniel Craig will at least have a trilogy as Bond. Casino Royale is really one of the best modern action movies, and almost certainly the best Bond film since Connery.

Nobody has even mentioned Bay's name in connection with Bond. Sam Mendes is the man for they're going with.

@ Rormachine

I respectfully disagree with the prospect of Bay being able to properly direct a bond movie.

I can't wait until Bay and his junkyard material is recycled for can goods.

YEAH! I hope so, I miss The Craig bond movies, he is just not better than Sean Connery.
Casino Royale is the best bond movie ever, but QOS was ok, I just missed "Bond, James Bond" and "Vodka Martini, Shaken, Not Stirred" classsic quotes.
Let´s hope we get a classic bond movie :)

haha, I was only joking about Bay, but I do think its not a huge task to throw together a few set pieces and have Bond shag a few chicks. Don't get me wrong, I really liked Casino Royale..not so much Solace. But they don't take a master film maker to accomplish what a Bond movie sets out to be. Mendes would be far better suited to something with a bit more grey matter.

Spyglass is supposed to be taking it over, and they'll likely find a distributor to handle the release of the Bond film. Same scenario that MGM had with Sony when they did Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.

Great job Ed!

OMFG I hope this is true! They need to get making more Bond with Craig asap before he gets too old for the role.

I'm a HUGE Bond fan, I've seen them all at least 10 times each, and I love the new ones with Craig. Casino Royale is my fav. one of all time, so good to see them move away from the caricature he was.

To me Brosnan was an amazing Bond, but didn't have great scripts to work with. He even wanted to go the direction they are now, but the producers didn't. Too bad.

Lol, it is a concern though because of this current delay and how long in between they film the Bond movies, even Pierce was looking a bit old (still looked great though)in his last one and he only did 4 of them. I just hope Craig is able to squeeze in at least 4 and still look good doing them. The last few Roger Grandpa Moore ones were looking a bit silly as he was far too old to be believable.

Def. Goldeneye was Brosnan's best. I did like Tomorrow a lot, but thought the bad guy was too cheesy and there was a bit too much corny dialogue, same for World/Not Enough although there is was Denise Richards as a nuclear scientist, lol. Die Another Day had some great moments but suffered from way to hoaky a plot.

Big Martin Campbell fan here, he launched Brosnan, launched Craig. I wish he had come back to do Quantum. It was good but some funny direction in some scenes and was way too short a movie, needed a bit to flush it out more. I didn't like the weasley villan either.

I read somewhere a long time ago, Pierce went to the producers of the Bond movies and wanted to do Casino Royale as his last movie, and do it seriously. They told him it was unfilmable by todays standards, let him go, and did it anyway.

Great news Ed. Really want to see how Craig will deliver Bond now he finally gets a closure with Vesper. Craig is awesome as Bond. I really appreciate how each actor carries Bond in his era. The very first Bond I saw was Connery who intro the standard cool cinematic Bond. In fact I heard Connery was so great at being Bond that Fleming paid homage to Connery by adding a Scottish ancestry to Bond.

My second favorite was Timothy Dalton who is greatly unappreciated. Dalton pushed for renewed emphasis on gritty realism instead of fantasy plots and humour. Many critics have said he came closest to the actual Bond in the novels. His version of Bond has many mannerisms like squinting eyes and his voice hissing when angered are all based on Fleming's novels plus he did most of his stunts. By the way Goldeneye was originally written for Dalton. In fact watch the beach scene in Goldeneye where Bond is contemplating and the Russian girl asks her "How could you be so cold?" Bond responds "Its what keeps me alive." Honestly I also like Pierce as Bond but on that scene I'm sure Dalton would have been better. Too bad Dalton has to turn down Goldeneye. After years (6 years) of delay and with an obvious balding spot like Connery perhaps he realizes he is already too old. I wish doesn't happen to Craig.

I believe every Bond actor should have at least have a trilogy. Beyond three his an icon. Beyond five I think is too much.

Screw all plot ideas they have and use mine. The bad guy will be Jim Carrey's Walter Sparrow / Fingerling from "The Number 23." His goals will be to: rape Bond 23 times, eat 23 meals a day, nuke 23 countries, steal 23 diamonds, kidnap 23 princesses, smoke 23 cigars in a week, and, finally, reveal that the other 23 actors in the film aside from Daniel Craig were actually him. Only two actors required: Bond and Carrey's 23 alter-egos. They will be: 1. Bruce Nolan, Carl from Yes Man, Horton, Grinch, Hank Evans, Charlie Baileygates, Truman Burbank, The Cable Guy, Ace Ventura, Lloyd Christmas, Stanley Ipkiss, Peter Appleton, Scrooge, Dick Harper, Count Olaf, Edward Nygma, Ronald Reagan, Death, Tony Moroni, Skip Tarkenton, Walter Getz, Walter Sparrow, and Fingerling.

I really loved Dalton's Living Daylights, it's still up there for me as one of the best Bond movies ever.

At the time, OHMSS with George Lazenby was considered the most novel like version of Bond yet.

Back in the day, Dalton was supposed to have done Octopussy, but at the last minute, Moore decided to do it.

Same with Brosnan, he was asked to be Bond earlier on as well.

For me, here's my fav Bond's:

Connery;
From Russia With Love
Goldfinger
Thunderball

OHMSS
George Lazenby

Roger Moore
Golden Gun
Spy Who Loved Me
For Your Eyes Only

Timothy Dalton
Living Daylights

Pierce Brosnan
Goldenye
Tommorrow Never Dies
World Is Not Enough

Daniel Craig
Casino Royale
Quantum Of Solace

Thanks for the list. Now I know what Bond vids to watch. Honestly I have only watch a few Bond films.

Sean Connery:
Dr. No & From Russia with Love in the 70s and Goldfinger in the 90s -- all on late TV.

Roger Moore (both via Betamax)
For Your Eyes Only- this is the movie that finally convinced me Roger Moore is Bond.

Moonraker -- back then this is the movie that convinced me never to watch Bond movies again. Unfortunately including Dalton's Bond in the 80's.

Pierce Brosnan-- All of his movies. In fact it is also one reason I skipped Dalton's Bond in the 80's! I like Pierce as Bond because I enjoyed watching Remington Steel series. I'm also was one of those wanting for 5th Brosnan Bond not realizing he has aged-- but hey he aged gracefully.

Finally watched both Dalton's Bond in the late 90's and realize my mistake. Poor fella he was actually really good. Made me appreciate again why I originally like spy movies -- realistic and grittier.

Then finally watched both Craig's James Bond. Casino Royale is one of the very best. My only comment is that instead of November 2006 the best 007 film should have been shown on 2007. Now they will have to wait for another millennium!

Lol, I didn't forget Dalton was in LTK, I just didn't put it on my list of fav's. It was ok. I would have liked to see a 3rd Bond from him.

@ Kalabog
Your welcome! That's the same list I gave my brother when he asked me which ones to buy individually as he didn't want the whole set.
Dalton was really good! Too bad so many people overlooked him.
