The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has opened in South America a week early, kicking off its run at the international box office with an impressive $2.4 million. That may not sound like an awful lot, but it's triple the gross of the first film! It's no wonder then that analysts are predicting a debut in North America of over $165 million. With less than a week to go until it opens across the rest of the world, the sequel is set to easily take the top spot from Thor: The Dark World. Below are some photos of Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss Everdeen) at the French premiere of the movie courtesy of The Wrap. Are you guys looking forward to the sequel? Sound off with your thoughts below!

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

STARRING:

Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen
Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark
Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne
Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy
Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket
Lenny Kravitz as Cinna
Philip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee
Jeffrey Wright as Beetee

Im not a fan of this franchise I just really don’t see what the appeal is. I watched the first one 3x to try and get into it but it just escapes me. Im happy to see a strong female lead in a film that isn’t depending on a man to solve their problems but the premise of having a televised fight to the death for food seems retarded. Why not just put the money they waste on entertainment into growing crops and feed their rather limited population.

@ JoeMomma29 that is a understatement. Thor might drop down to 3rd. Marvel should have seen this coming.

I wasn't a fan of the first hunger games but I'll see this one for the effort alone. There seems to be drama and character. 96 on RT right now

Thor: The Dark World was a comedy and lazied out of any real drama or character.

I'm aware of that.

Then why would you think it's going to take a beatdown? The Dark World will be unlikely to draw 40 million even this weekend. There's not a great deal or any real money Catching Fire is going to take away from it by the 22nd and on.

No,Catching Fire will annihilate Thor 2.

Also, the purpose of the games is for entertainment for the Capitol and to punish the other districts for a revolution. Not to feed one single winner...

I'm just saying, Catching Fire is going to be huge and crush Thor at the box office.

It was always going to be huge and beat Thor at the box office. I'm also just saying the third week of Thor: The Dark World was never going to be looking at a lot of money with or without Catching Fire. The Dark World essentially already did it's job.

Maybe not when it comes to weekend debut, but Hobbit will be the bigger movie in worldwide box office earnings.

TDW will get nowhere near $750 million. That's just an idiotic statement. It will make $500 million-$600 million, maybe get close to $650 million, but that's it.

Catching Fire is gonna blow Thor totally out of the water. It's being predicted to make around $160 million in its opening weekend. That is TWICE what TDW made. That will be more than TDW makes in 2 weekends combined, probably more than Thor makes in 3 weekends combined. It may be more than Thor makes in 2 full weeks combined (Thor made basically $109 million in its 1st full week. Add the $35 million from this weekend that is being predicted, maybe 15 million more from Monday-Thursday, and you have $159 million through 2 full weeks. Catching Fire will beat that in 3-4 days. By the time Catching Fire has been out 7-10 days, I am guessing that its total will have passed TDW's total, even though TDW has a 2 week headstart.) Catching Fire will be the film that comes close to a billion, not TDW. I don't think it'll get there, but I could be wrong.

As for The Hobbit beating Catching Fire, maybe. But, Catching Fire gets nearly a full month with very little competition before Hobbit comes out. And it will get some competition around Christmas. That may hurt it. Plus, I'm not hearing as much hype for this one as the first one.
Lhornbk
Lhornbk - 11/16/2013, 8:43 PM
Just to be clear, Hobbit will get competition around Christmas that will hurt it. Catching Fire will have made its money by then. I think Catching Fire will be bigger domestically (Hunger Games made $408 million domestically, while the first Hobbit film made $303 domestically.) Hobbit will probably make more worldwide, but I won't be surprised if Catching Fire beats it. I don't worry about worldwide that much, I think domestic is more important. (Sorry, but I just don't care what people in France or China watch.)
