INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY Star Harrison Ford Reiterates This Will Be His Last Time Playing Indy

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is easily one of 2023's most highly anticipated movies, and star Harrison Ford has now addressed his return and while it will be his final time wearing the fedora.

It wasn't that long ago when it started to look like Indiana Jones 5 wasn't ever going to happen. For some, that came as a relief after 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the mostly-awful movie that brought Harrison Ford back to one of his most iconic roles after a 19-year absence.

Director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas were plotting out new story ideas prior to Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm, with the former officially announced as Indiana Jones 5's helmer in 2016. Set for release in 2019, it was pushed to 2021 before Spielberg walked away from the project, ultimately leading to Logan director James Mangold taking over.

While we have faith in the filmmaker's ability to do the beloved character justice on screen (next up for him is DC Studios' Swamp Thing), there are those unhappy about the prospect of Indy's story coming to an end.

During a recent interview with Variety (via ActioNewz.com), Ford addressed his decision to return as Indy and confirmed that, sadly, he's going to bid farewell to the adventurer after this movie. "I always wanted to do it. I wanted to do the rest of the story to see the end of his career," the actor explained. "It’s the last time for me."

While there was a time Lucasfilm considered casting a new actor as Indiana Jones (Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt was being lined up for the role), a very vocal backlash put an end to that.

Even so, many fans remain convinced The Dial of Destiny will conclude with the iconic adventurer's death, leaving Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Helena to take over his gig in what would then be a female-led action franchise. However, it's been confirmed on multiple occasions that this movie isn't going to serve as a passing of the baton.

With Mangold at the helm, we've been anticipating Indiana Jones 5 being something special, and all signs point to it eventually ranking among the year's best movies. Ford's long-awaited return as the iconic adventurer is incredibly exciting, especially as we'll be following him both in the late 1960s and as a younger man.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is set to be released in theaters on June 30, 2023.

Key He Quan will gladly step up, I didn't realize he was a stunt coordinator on X-Men 2000 lol I love a comeback story!

@bobevanz - although I don't think a 70s setting fits the Indy franchise, I could see them do a few movies with Key He Quan. He still has it in him.

The last scene with Indy will tug the heart strings.

@TheDpool - No doubt John Williams' music will greatly contribute to that moment.

Ford is already 80 so I didn't expect him to do another one anyway, so this doesn't come as a surprise me. Doubt Indy will die though.

I also doubt Helena will take over this franchise. A 70s setting just doesn't fit. And if they did the 70s, I much rather see Short Round. Or a Short Round in the 1940s.

Why is this article on this site? It's a good article...for another site. This is for comicbookmovies.

And don't give me the BS of "Wellll..there are Indy comics out there."

This shit is not based on a comic book and never was.

@BringFFtoMCU - well, it was on ActionNewz as well.

I gave up this being a cbm site long ago though. Any superficial connection like ''there have been comics about this IP'' or ''this director or actor worked on a cbm'' are good enough excuses for me.

@BringFFtoMCU - Agree with everything @bkmeijer1 said. I think that sometime within the past 10 years--once Comic Con got to be less about the books and adopted a mass-media culture expo vibe--this site followed suit. Fans of comic book movies are usually fans of x, y, and z properties, so it all gets lumped together.

It doesn't help that Marvel and WB became more and more secretive about their projects. This has caused less verifiable content to be published and why we are inundated with every rumor or speculation that gains traction on Twitter.

@TheRose - that's a good point about mass media culture. A lot of things that were in their own corner before, are now part of the same pop culture.

Ofcourse this site had to adapt. Anything comic book related is part of a larger whole, so it makes sense this site choose to adopt those things too.

Holy Grail should have been his last adventure, well it is for me.

@marvel72 - I tend to agree that the franchise could have stopped, but mostly because I belive that Indiana would have hung up his hat and whip at some point. Mutt following in the footsteps of his deadbeat dad had potential, but LaBeof's off-screen troubles have stunted any development for that character. It's a shame that after Holy Grail, the company wasn't ready to take the risk on Short Round; it would have made more sense for the series to spin-off with him instead, or even Marion for that matter.

The plot hook of a treasure hunter searching for religious relics has always intrigued me. Indiana's blasphemous and bold attitude makes for a fun non-believer vs. the Divine dynamics. I know this structure is unlikely to continue (one viewing of Temple of Doom makes it clear that this content matter isn't always handled with care), but it's pulled me into the franchise when I was young.

@marvel72 - I say wait & see, I have faith in Mangold, hes been killing it since 3:10 to Yuma with hits like Walk the Line, Ford vs Ferrari & Logan, the man made one of my favorit Stallone films in Cop Land I think Indy 5 will surprise us with how good it is... fingers crossed though.

@AliX - I even like Identity quite a bit (though the third act isn't as strong). And I think Knight & Day is a lot of fun, especially because of how they played very much around with the notion on everyones mind of Tom Cruise playing the super spy, and just ratcheted it up. It's a very cheesy movie, but I'd say a lot fun.

The only proper way to do it is let the legend end. The only way he stays the iconic classic. Obiously there have been other Indy stories outside of Harrison Ford, but he is Indiana Jones and always will be... as long as they just leave it alone.
