INDIANA JONES & THE DIAL OF DESTINY Ending Explained: Is There A Supernatural/Sci-Fi Twist? SPOILERS

It wouldn't be an Indiana Jones movie without some kind of supernatural or science fiction-inspired elements... right? Find out if The Dial of Destiny follows suit right here...

Though the Indiana Jones franchise is mostly inspired by classic pulp action adventure serials, all four previous movies also feature significant supernatural/sci-fi elements.

In Raiders of the Lost Ark, it was the face-melting spirits, in Temple of Doom we met the heart-ripping, Kali-worshipping Thuggee cult. Then, The Last Crusade sent Indy and his father after the life-giving Holy Grail, before Kingdom of the Crystal Skull went and introduced aliens.

So, it probably won't surprise you to learn that the fifth instalment, The Dial of Destiny follows suit - but we have a feeling this movie's fantastical twist may prove to be the most divisive yet.

Major spoilers from this point on.

Archimedes' dial, aka the Antikythera, is believed to be able to predict "fissures in time," and sure enough, Mads Mikkelsen’s villainous Jürgen Voller manages to fly a plane right into the past. Unfortunately, the continental drift throws off his calculations, and the dial brings our main characters back two thousand years to the Siege of Syracuse.

A badly wounded Indy and Helena use a parachute to escape the plane before it crashes, as the bad guys perish. Shaw begs her godfather to return to their timeline in the plane piloted by her sidekick Teddy, but he tells her wants to stay and witness history unfold. Concerned that Jones will perish and likely alter the events of the past while he's at it, Helena knocks the legendary adventurer unconscious with a right hook and drags him onto the plane.

Indy wakes up back in his own bed, before being reunited with his estranged wife, Marion (Karen Allen), in an emotional moment that pays homage to the "where doesn't it hurt" scene from Raiders.

Honestly, the time-travel stuff works pretty well, all things considered, and is really no more far-fetched than anything we've seen in the previous films when you think about it.

Do you plan on seeing The Dial of Destiny this weekend? Let us know in the comments.

The movie also stars Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory), John Rhys-Davies (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Shaunette Renee Wilson (Black Panther), Thomas Kretschmann (Das Boot), Toby Jones (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), Oliver Richters (Black Widow), and Ethann Isidore (Mortel).

Directed by James Mangold, the film is produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Simon Emanuel, with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas serving as executive producers. John Williams, who has worked on each Indy adventure since the original Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, once again composed the score.

I will be seeing Dial of Destiny. I am not sure if the plot is compelling but I cannot resist a good Indiana Jones film.

I really enjoyed Dial of Destiny and it’s definitely a good "Indiana Jones" movie.

It does have a few problems though. The CGI doesn't always look very good and with a length of 2.5 hours it is a bit long - and I do feel that they unnecessarily do Mutt dirty.

The biggest problem, however, is that we see the film in 2023 instead of the 1980s.
We haven't had the opportunity to watch and re-watch it hundreds of times over the decades like the other films in the series.

Without the nostalgia factor, it can't quite match the memories of the original Indiana Jones movies.
But in time, as we watch it again and again, I'm sure it will measure up to the classics that preceded it.

Overall; a worthy and satisfying conclusion to my absolute favorite film series.

Time travel was an interesting idea that could really temp Indy - the prospect of actually visiting all these historical events he's spent his life studying. I don't feel it was properly explored/resolved though, Indy actually has the dial at the end and doesn't choose to destroy it as his friend requested, nor does he go back and save his son.

So aliens were too far, but time travel is fine?

@Origame - exactly, the crystal skull was crap. not wasting time on this one.

@Origame - Now now, when you are out of original ideas always go with time travel.

If Endgame taught them anything...it was that.

@Origame - the aliens were also interdimensional. That's a step too far imo

Oh there is a twist and from what I hear it's dumb.

Here is the problem with Hollywood today...

They spent $300 million on this crap movie.
$300
+ roughly $200 million marketing
+ having to earn about $450 million box office (because Disney gets 60% of ticket sales).

They are going to have to make at least $950 million to at least break even.

Now think about this.
The original Raiders of the Lost Ark cost $20 million to make when it was made in 1980
Adjusted for inflation that means it would cost $73 million to make today.

It was all practical effects and on location shooting.

Original Raiders
$20 Million production
$15 million marketing
$40 million ticket sales needed.
___
$75 million to break even.

And the original raiders made $367 million in 1981.
That is equal to $1.227 BILLION today.
That's a huge profit.

Get rid of so much of this overused CGI, write a MUCH better story and go on location.
Keep the production costs down and these studios can make bank.

@TyrantBossMedia -

My God, you're stupid.

Clearly, you are just ripping off other people's talking points and have absolutely no concept of economics.

You can't just point to "inflation" and suggest that any film should just cost half as much.

"Top Gun Maverick" cost 12 times more than the first film.

Why do you think that is?

Change in union laws, safety protocols, the branding value of key participants, overall costs of making a film (yes, including effects) and, oh yeah, a PANDEMIC will mean that any action film will be infinitely more expensive than one made in the '80s.

So let me get this straight….
in all the past Indiana Jones movies we’ve seen Indy fight guys way bigger and stronger then him and take multiple punches to the face and not get knocked out once but this skinny little “fleabag” lady punches him once and knocks him completely out? That has the stink of Kathleen Kennedy all over it. 👎
