If you were a fan of Mission: Impossible - Fallout (and really, who wasn't?), we have some great news for you. According to Variety, director Christopher McQuarrie has signed on to helm the next two installments in the popular action franchise.

The sequels are to be shot back-to-back, with the first set to hit theaters in summer 2021 and the second coming out in summer 2022.

McQuarrie has since confirmed the news with the following Tweet.

Tom Cruise, who will reprise the role of Ethan Hunt, also weighed in.

McQuarrie had previously expressed interest in moving on to different projects and there were reports that he was in line to direct Paramount’s Without Remorse starring Michael B. Jordan as John Clark, but the lure of the next mission was clearly too much to resist.

@Typobutcorrect - I really want them to make 10 and have Ethan die in the 9th one. Fingers crossed.

Fallout was one of the greatest action films ever made. If MI7 is as good as Rogue Nation and Fallout (and lets be honest, it probably will be), McQuarrie will have directed the greatest action film trilogy of all time. And then a year later, greatest quadrilogy ever.

This is cool, but also seems rather risky. We’ll just have to wait and see what awesomeness they drop on us.

@Killuminatic - Jeremy Renner should come back, don't see why he wouldn't. He wasn't in Fallout because of filming Endgame.

Would love to see Paula Patton back!!

Though, part of me knows that Paramount is only doing this because they're desperate. Star Trek is over, and Transformers is dying, and the next TMNT reboot will probably do decent.

But who cares? More M:I!!!

I really liked Fallout and as an action movie it was a fantastic experience, but I HATED the end. That entire sequence felt like it belonged in a completely different movie... a bad one.

Watching the end helicopter chase in IMAX was incredible imo. Loved it 💯

Oh shit! How am I forgetting this? I don’t think it bothered me so much but didn’t Luther make a joke or something and everyone laughs?

@regularmovieguy - Hunt in the hospital bed, everyone gathered around, cheese city. They even lit the scene brighter than the rest of the movie. Corny jokes galore. Shite.

@RorMachine - Hmm, yeah, I wasnt the biggest fan of it. Should have ended with the shot of Ethan and Ilsa walking away after handing Lane over.

That's awesome news, but that means he won't be available for a comic book film in the foreseeable future...
