MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 6 Might Feature The Most Impressive & Unbelievable Sequence Tom Cruise Has Ever Done
Thanks to a new interview with David Ellison, we've learned that Tom Cruise has been working on a big Mission: Impossible 6 sequence for well over a year and it might just be his wildest one yet!
Throughout the blockbuster Mission: Impossible franchise, we've seen Tom Cruise scale the Burj Khalifa, hang off the side of an airplane, base-jump off skyscrapers, rock climb over Dead Horse Point, engage in high-speed motorcycle chases, narrowly avoid rockets, and a lot, lot more, but now, new comments have surfaced suggesting we've barely scratched the surface with what the legendary movie star can do.
During the world premiere of Life at SXSW a few weeks back, Collider caught up with Skydance Media CEO David Ellison and learned a few very intriguing details about the upcoming Chris McQuarrie-directed sequel, specifically regarding the film's trademark action sequence, which Cruise has apparently been training for since the premiere of Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation in July 2015.
“We’re thrilled. Chris is back, obviously, writing and directing after Rogue Nation. We could not be more excited about the character Henry Cavill’s going to play. And I will say after the Burj [Khalifa] we thought it was going to be impossible to top that stunt, and then Tom did the A400M for the plane. What Tom is doing in this movie I believe will top anything that’s come before. It is absolutely unbelievable—he’s been training for a year. It is going to be, I believe, the most impressive and unbelievable thing that Tom Cruise has done in a movie, and he has been working on it since right after Rogue Nation came out. It’s gonna be mind-blowing.”
"The most impressive and unbelieveable thing that Tom Cruise has done in a movie." - Now, that's a strong statement, especially considering the 3x Academy Award-nominee & 3x Golden Globe-winner has spent the better part of the last three and a half decades wowing audiences time and time again.
McQuarrie offered his take a short while later, after the interview was released, clarifying that the "stunt" Ellison refers to is actually an extended sequence, likely in the same vein as the amazing Casablanca chase scenes in Rogue Nation.
Ellison later touched on Cruise's philosophy regarding his practical stunt work and it sounds like something we can all pretty much agree on is pretty awesome. “It all comes from the best place. It is all about entertaining an audience. Tom’s entire mantra for hanging on the side of the Burj Khalifa or the A380 or literally holding your breath for six minutes underwater to do the Taurus sequence is, in a world of massive [visual] effects, he said the audience can tell when it’s you on a green screen or when you’re actually doing it live. And the tension, because the stunt is real, actually puts the audience where Ethan Hunt is where they are in the movie. He said that’s why he does it; it’s all about entertaining an audience and it makes the movie better.”
The interview also re-affirmed the production start date of April 10 and revealed that they'll be filming in Paris, London, and New Zealand.
In addition to Cruise, the cast will also feature Rebecca Ferguson, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Sian Brooke, and Henry Cavill.
