More From Director Shane Black On DOC SAVAGE

Signing up to direct the upcoming Doc Savage adaptation after the highly successful Iron Man 3, Shane Black recently spoke to Collider about the 1930's setting in which the film will take place, and what the character means to him. Check it out!

We’re shooting it as though it’s in the 30s, including all the Capra-esque elements of 1930s films like You Can’t Take It With You. The idea of ‘What if Jimmy Stewart were a stone-cold killer?’ basically. It’s that kind of combination which we enjoy. Doc Savage is a personal film to me. It’s a 1930s pulp character so it hasn’t been around for 75 years or so, but people if they’re introduced to it they’ll get to know, hopefully, what I came to love as a kid. I’ve read those series for 43 years and always wanted to figure out how to crack it.

No release date has been confirmed for the upcoming project, but due to Black's love for the classic hero, it wouldn't be a surprise if we got some news soon regarding shooting dates and such. Stay tuned to CBM for more as the news follows!

wonder if Marvel would bring this guy for Iron Man 4 (if it ever gonna get made). Or Drew Pearce to write the script. It could end up with some sort of riots ;)

Sounds like he loves the character and holds a deep respect for the material. Good thing he doesn't have to watch someone else do the movie and rape the character into oblivion.

@California

I misread it too and thought Shane Black had been given the director's chair for Doctor Strange. I was about LOL so hard.

Iron Man 3 plot:
In anger, Stark dares the terrorists to come and fight him… at his house… and gives them his address. Their response: They air strike his house and Stark isn’t even remotely ready for it. This has to be one of the dumbest plot decisions in superhero movie history.

Coulsonlives.... Doc was a pulp character of the 30's along with the Shadow, Indiana Jones, The Rocketeer and The Phantom. He has no SUPER POWERS but has been raised to the peak of perfection at everything he does. He has a personal wealth of millions and lives in New York on top of the highest skyscraper there (i.e. The Empire State Building, though never specifically mentioned) Despite having no powers he has strange bronze eyes and a bronze skin and he has five 'aides' men who follow him everywhere - Renny, a massive engineer with huge fists, Monk a huge ape-like man, Ham a handsome and clever lawyer, Johnny a seven-foot beanpole Archaeologist, and Long Tom a skinny little guy who can beat up 5 guys at a time.
I am really psyched up for this one - like Black i have followed Doc for over thirty years and he is a GREAT character. Should be plenty of material, there are over 200 adventures with Doc

Why would you misread it as Doc Strange?

If anyone is looking for a good analogue to this character from recent years, Warren Ellis utilized his own version in Planetary, named Doc (Axel) Brass. Great series. Doc Savage is cool, and it's no coincidence that so many elements from the Batman mythology are based on this very cool character. Just don't go looking for that god-awful movie from 1975.

Of course Doc Savage, The Phantom and The Shadow actually originated in the 30's, unlike Indy and the Rocketeer who were set in the 30's but originated in the 80's. I love stuff set in that era.

TwisdidThorn@ my sentiments as well. I didn't know what the Mandarin twist was, but am actually glad in retrospect that they chose that route. Mandarin's story and character are much too complex to deal with in one film. The story of the rings, Mandarin and IM need two to three films to do it proper justice.

ahem - Areopagus - you are perhaps a little too generous, I remember as a kid watching that flick and it was, lets be honest, even then extremely camp. I hope that Black makes a more intelligent, adult version which respects the original material and the times and yet adds a touch of class and some more serious special effects (lets be honest, the green snake was a travesty!!)
