Deadline has exclusively revealed that Stephen Lang will return as 'Colonel Miles Quaritch' in the three sequels to the highest grossing movie of all-time, Avatar. "Steven was so memorable in the first film, we’re privileged to have him back," director James Cameron told the site. "I’m not going to say exactly HOW we’re bringing him back, but it’s a science fiction story, after all. His character will evolve into really unexpected places across the arc of our new three-film saga. I really look forward to working with such a gifted actor, who’s also become a good friend." Bringing back the character - who quite clearly died in 2009's Avatar may seem like an odd decision, but Cameron is no stranger to working out seemingly complicated plot decisions such as this one! How do you guys feel about the return of Lang? Be sure to sound off below.

Correct me if I'm wrong...but didn't he die in the first movie?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to these movies. Hopefully though it doesn't make as much money as the first one, because that seemed to bring a lot of hate towards the film IMO.

This character may as well have had a Snidely Whiplash mustache. He is probably one of the shallowest written characters I've seen in movies in recent memory.

Great actor. If an X-Force movie ever gets made, he would make a perfect Cable/Nate Summers!

Avatar was an extremely mediocre movie that was too long. Good visuals, but it had the same plot as Pocahontas. As the Honest Trailer said, "Military bad. Trees good."

And also, this guy was a very stereotypical bad guy and a developmentally flat character.

oh oh oh, they clone him or something, but whatever, it ends up with him in an avatar body, but he's still on the human side, so now he's got this badass huge navi body and kicking ass in it!!

I'm calling it ftw!!!

The next film will make 2 billion dollars,the 3rd 3 billion,the fourth 3.5 billion.

"Mediocre film" who cares? the first made over a billion, so the follow up with the same director and core cast has to make more.

Oh wait,I thought this was a Avengers AOU thread.

Funny how so many here shit on AVATAR and down play the future success of the franchise then turn around and use box office as the main reason the next Avengers film will be the biggest thing ever.

Yeah, this guy screams Cable when you look at him. Is saying that just as bad as saying Bryan Cranston should be Lex Luthor cause he's bald? Yup. Do I care? Nope. I totally want to see Stephen Lang giving Wolverine the business.

I agree. Putting Quaritch in a Navi body seems the logical thing to do from a story perspective. It's also a very Cameron thing to do in a sequel.

The first was lame, and was a rip off of Fern Gully. I feel like Cameron is the Joseph Stalin of the film industry. If he produces enough Avatars people will forget they even saw Fern Gully and how its nearly a shot for shot remake.

They can grow part human part navi avatars so having a clone of this guy grown makes perfect sense. I can't imagine he'd have all the memories of his dead self, but I'm sure he could be debriefed. The real challenge is making sure having him back doesn't feel repetitive or like an over-use of the character. Just because he was a cool character in the original doesn't mean he'll be great in the sequels. If he does transition from a bad guy to a good guy, Cameron will need to be somewhat fresh here as he did this in the Terminator/Terminator 2 as well (though that was like 20 years ago ans worked out great).

Might as well bring back Sigorney Weaver and Michelle Rodriguez. Cameron was short sighted and got rid of great characters. But Stephen Lang is a great actor so I don't mind seeing him again.

Would make a great Liquid Snake.

Avatar was one of the most overrated movies in recent memory. Doesn't even come close to deserving the amount of money it made. The only reason it did so well was because of 3D and the fact that James Cameron directed.

Well, if a movie made 2.7 billion dollars worldwide, the studio can do whatever they want to. In the end, its all about $, and thats the only thing that matters for every movie studio, Box office.
