20th Century Studios has debuted the first trailer for Ridley Scott's historical epic, The Last Duel.

Based on true events, this gripping tale of betrayal and vengeance focuses on France’s last sanctioned duel between Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) and Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver), two friends who become bitter rivals when Carrouges’ wife, Marguerite (Jodie Comer), claims to have been viciously assaulted by Le Gris.

The well-respected Norman squire denies the charges, but Marguerite refuses to stay silent, risking being burned at the stake should Le Gris emerge victorious in the inevitable trail by combat.

“I love working with Matt, so it was an added bonus to be able to work with him and Ben as both actors and as screenwriters, along with Nicole Holofcener, and I knew it would be a great result,” says Scott. “I had admired the show ‘Killing Eve’ and had been looking for the opportunity to present Jodie Comer with a challenging role. Her performance as Marguerite will make her one of the great actresses of her generation.”

The Last Duel is based on Eric Jager’s book The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat in Medieval France, which brings the turbulent Middle Ages to life in striking detail. When etiquette, social aspirations and justice were driven by the codes of chivalry, the consequences for defying the institutions of the time – the Church, the nobility at court, a teenage king – could be severe. For a woman navigating these violent times, one who had no legal standing without the support of her husband, the stakes were even higher.

The Last Duel also stars Ben Affleck (Zack Snyder's Justice League) as Count Pierre d’Alençon, and is set to hit theaters on October 15.

I’m here for this, but I don’t see it being a major box office hit.

@oldnoname - you’re right, I forgot sometimes studios just make movies with no incentive of making their money back.

@Oberlin4Prez - sometimes some blockbusters are just money laundry

@dirtyscore - If you actually dig deeper into "Hollywood Accounting", you will realize the whole Hollywood IS all about turning black money into white 😉

Hell yeah, these kind of movies are so rarely made these days. Rob Roy, Braveheart, I eat that shit up. This looks excellent. Although as is usually the case the trailer gave too much away and made it obvious who will lose and what will happen to her.

I'm getting real kingdom of heaven vibes. Its good to see Ridley going back to his roots with this one, the guy is usually really great with historical dramas. I'm looking forward to this and his Napoleon film with Joaquin Phoenix.

Ok, but only if you change all of matt Damon's dialogue to simply "MATT DAMON!"

I thought Ben Affleck was playing Adam Driver's role when I first heard about this film. Interested to see how both Ben and Matt do in this type of film.

@oldnoname - Due to scheduling, Affleck had to take the smaller role and Driver replaced him.

God, I love Ridley Scott's Historical Epics.

I mean, I love mostly all of his stuff anyway, but he's always in his stride in these quarters.

@Se4M4NSt4ine - Watch Black Widow if you are into really bad accents by people who don't even look like those they trying really hard to portray. 😂😂

Yay, we get a medieval epic that deals with the reality that life in those times was complex and sophisticated and not just a condescending parody that makes fun of them.

Man, I think this looks incredible. I hadn't even heard of this one, but now I am pumped to see it. That said, Affleck looks a little out of place here, but I will reserve judgement until I see the movie.

Not familiar with the story, but it does sound interesting (really wanting to look it up who wins, but I kinda don't wanna know). Especially with those leads.

How well do people know this is true story back then all people have died this could be made up all we know like some stories in bible created by people and story gets embellished with each New person telling it
BigMikeReviews
BigMikeReviews - 7/20/2021, 1:22 PM
@dragon316 - Well this story is not nearly as old as biblical stories, this is a series of events that took place in the 14th century where scholars and historians would have probably recorded what happened especially in relation to politics and rulership. However neutrality and impartiality was probably not as important to the writers back then as it they are now. So embellishments and exaggerations are almost impossible to discount. Not to mention whatever this particular Hollywood writer(s) chooses to add for artistic license in this version of events.
