Tom Cruise Set To Return As JACK REACHER In Adaptation Of NEVER GO BACK

It has been revealed today that Paramount Pictures are moving ahead with a sequel to 2012's Jack Reacher, with the hope being that Christopher McQuarrie can helm the follow-up - based on Never Go Back - after finishing work on the fifth instalment of Mission Impossible.

Deadline has confirmed that work is indeed now moving ahead on a sequel to 2012's Jack Reacher. That movie went on to earn $218 million worldwide on a budget of only $57 million, and a follow-up has been put on the fast track with the studio already looking for writers. They're apparently hoping that Christopher McQuarrie will direct, but he obviously can't write this one as he's too busy preparing for Mission Impossible 5. According to the site, "This one will be based on Never Go Back, which was published earlier this fall. In it, Reacher heads back to his old military based in Virginia to take a woman to dinner who is now the commanding officer. By the time he gets there, she has been arrested and Reacher finds himself being charged with pummeling one guy, and fathering a child with a woman. He can’t remember either transgression, but gets to the bottom of it with cunning and sometimes brute force." An interesting premise, and the news that it's based on Lee Child's latest novel should come as very welcome news to fans.

It was..ok. I mean it never annoyed me, had a few very good scenes and decent performances all round, but it was also predictably generic at the end of the day. I guess I'd watch a sequel if McQuarrie returns.

I admit that if I didn't have an in at the theater I used to work at I wouldn't have seen the first one. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. I'm game for a sequel.

Some awesome action scenes.

It's a shame Rosamund Pike isn't returning.

It surprised me how much I enjoyed the first one. I was expecting a run of the mill action film but it turned out to be more of an action thriller. The opening scene with the sniper was really intense I didn't expect that at all.

JR was the sort of thrilling/funny red state actioneer that Clint Eastwood used to crank out before he got too old. I'm pleasantly pleased by this news.

Tom Cruise was probably the exact opposite was what reacher was supposed to be looks wise, but this is a good case of talent overcoming and adapting. I was pleasantly surprised. I wonder why they are skipping so many books. They jumped like twenty books. This last book was pretty good though, so I'm not mad. Hopefully they flash back to how the desk in the office got the dent.

The directing in the first one was perfect. I thought all the elements in the movie just worked really well together. This one doesn't sound too hot but I'll watch it because I like Cruise and McQuarrie and I trust they'll make a decent sequel

Despite yet another general critics coup to shoot the movie down, it managed to still make a decent profit and turned out to be a damn good film. Roll on with the rest of the adaptations from the book series as frequently as possible please.

@jimoakley
I was a very vocal hater before I saw the movie (big fan of the books and Lee child's is the man), but really was surprised by it. While his size and look was way off, they managed to stay very close to the source otherwise. They managed to get the whole kungfu man who walks the earth with only the clothes on his back thing very well.

@rra
It doesn't matter much because most of the books are stand alone. Where it does get messed up is the girl he is going to have dinner with was around in the background in the previous book, although they never met personally. So it makes me wonder how they change the story to make it work.
