Django Unchained would have marked a pretty big departure for Will Smith, and given the talented actor a chance to shine in a movie that wouldn't have necessarily been in his comfort zone. Director Quentin Tarantino met with Smith and was quoted as saying that they just "couldn't make it work", but didn't go into too much detail. However in an interview with EW, Smith himself sheds some light on things.
“Django wasn’t the lead, so it was like, I need to be the lead. The other character was the lead! I was like, ‘No, Quentin, please, I need to kill the bad guy!’”
It IS arguable that Django wasn't the lead, but along with Christoph Waltz's Dr. Schultz he was most certainly the co-lead. Smith's almost juvenile comment about killing the bad guy is..odd. Jamie Foxx did a great job as Django but I know some were really looking forward to seeing what Smith did with the role, what do you guys think now?
