It was announced last year that CBS All Access would air a 10-episode miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's masterful post-apocalyptic horror novel The Stand, and thanks to Vanity Fair we now have a first look at several of the main characters.

There's no sign of James Marsden (Westworld, Sonic the Hedgehog) as principal protagonist Stu Redman or Amber Heard (Aquaman) as the conflicted Nadine Cross, but the stills do spotlight Jovan Adepo as Larry Underwood, Heather Graham as Rita Blakemoor, Owen Teague as Harold Lauder, and Odessa Young as Frannie Goldsmith.

We also see the story's opposing forces of light and darkness: Whoopi Goldberg as Mother Abagail, and Alexander Skarsgård as the demonic Randall Flagg.

“He’s so charming and he’s so handsome, and so powerful—I mean genuinely powerful, able to perform these sort of miracles where he could levitate himself and he has these actual powers,” said showrunner Taylor Elmore of the show's charismatic villain. “And yet he needs this adulation and this kind of worship from these people whom he’s summoned to him. He needs to have them make a show all the time of how grateful they are to him.”

For those unfamiliar with King's novel, The Stand deals with a global pandemic (yes, it's a scarily prescient tale) known as "Captain Tripps" which wipes out 99% of the world's population. The survivors are immune to the disease, but are ultimately forced to fight each other as some are drawn to a the light (Abagail), and others to darkness (Flagg).

New Mutants director Josh Boone, who was the driving force behind all previous attempts to adapt the book, will direct, write, and produce the upcoming series. Check out the stilsl below and let us know what you think. No premiere date for The Stand has been announced yet.

FORCE FOR GOOD Whoopi Goldberg as Mother Abagail the 108yearold whose followers hold fast to their humanity.

Jovan Adepo as Larry Underwood and Heather Graham as Rita Blakemoor.

Owen Teague as Harold Lauder.

ANGELS AND DEVILS Alexander Skarsgard as demonic Randall Flagg.

Alexander Skarsgrd as Randall Flagg and Nat Wolff as Lloyd Henreid.

Odessa Young as expectant mother Frannie Goldsmith.

A mini-series:
-about a world-ending virus
-featuring Amber Heard
-from the director of New Mutants
2020 really feels like an unfortunate year you'd want this to come out in. Also, if (from most accounts) Boone struggled with adapting New Mutants, what hope is he gonna have with something so much denser and bigger in scope?

I will say though, that Alexander Skarsgård as Randall Flagg is a great bit of casting. Shit, all three Flagg castings have been great so far, it's just a shame that McConaughey's was in an absolute disaster and Jasper Pääkkönen's Dark Tower pilot never got picked up.

@tmp3 - New Mutants hasn't even come out yet dude, and his struggle with adapting it comes from Disney buying Fox, not his ineptitude as a director. I'll give you the first two points, but The Fault in Our Stars is generally considered a pretty good film, and The Stand is basically King's best book.

@soberchimera - Yeah, but The Stand is an insanely complicated book to adapt, even with a mini-series. Also, if New Mutants was so good it wouldn't have been such a problem film from Fox. We'll see how it goes, but it looks like a generic YA horror film which is impressive considering he had to adapt a superhero team in the era of superhero films, while with The Stand has been deemed unfilmable for ages.

@tmp3 - Well, let's at least wait for those first intial reviews before casting it aside as a complete failure first shall we? Also, as evidenced with the Josh Trank and Dark Phoenix situations, Fox's executives aren't exactly the most competent studio when it comes to adapting superhero films and its not always completely 100% the director's fault.

Glad they went with the jean jacket with buttons for The Walking Dude. Matthew mcconaughey was good as Flagg but he played him a little to obviously evil with his black sports jacket and weird superpowers.

@Stinkor1 - to be fair your comparing a character from two different novels/films. I mean in the dark tower series he was literally referred to as "the man in black" and hes a wizard that used his powers often throughout the series.

@SuperManes - yeah, I’ll give you that. But he absolutely was the same character. And I’m pretty sure there was some art in the last book in the series that showed him with a jacket with the buttons on it. I guess my real point was that I’m glad they made him look like how he dressed for The Stand. All denimed out.

I just finished re-reading this last night. I know, hell of a book to read during Covid-19. I can’t help but visualize Gary Sinese as Stu, Molly Ringwald as Frannie, Jamey Sheridan as Flagg, Ruby Dee as Mother Abigail, Rob Lowe as Nick, Ray Walston as Glenn, Miguel Ferrer a Lloyd, Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick!) as Tom and Rob Lowe as Nick. The mini series was good, especially for a 90’s horror mini-series on network TV. Excellent cast! I hope this is as good or better.

@RolandD - the mini series is good but it feels like it was directed by two different people ala from dusk till dawn. the first half was so intense but the second half, especially the third act, was almost comical and corny in parts

@adamcawa - I guess I should re-watch it then. The last time I saw it was when it was originally on TV. I will say that Laura San Giocomo was not what I expected visually for Nadine. I am also a wimp when it comes to horror movies even though I love reading Stephen King so being corny and not horrifying is probably right up my alley.

@RolandD - it was still good, just the odd tonal shift is somewhat jarring if you watch the entire thing in one sitting

@adamcawa - Tonal shift? Did someone say Justice League?

That's the look they went with for Flagg?

Hopefully it looks better in motion.

Also you guys really need to get over yourselves on Amber Heard ffs

@ShellHead - If it was the other way around everyone would be crapping all over Depp, so I don't think its unwarranted. As a matter of fact everyone did crap all over Depp when she initially made her false accusations so she deserves all the hate.

....I'm gonna watch this because I don't want to get on Amber Heard's bad side.
