Once upon a time, Hellboy and Pacific Rim director Guillermo Del Toro was set to take the helm of a Justice League Dark movie for Warner Bros. Now, he's revealed the ideas and characters he planned to use.

Justice League Dark is a project that's been in the works for several years at Warner Bros., with the latest iteration overseen by J.J. Abrams and seemingly encompassing a number of solo outings as well as an eventual team-up. It sounds like all of that will play out on HBO Max, though filmmaker Guillermo del Toro was once developing a big screen debut for the supernatural heroes.

During a recent conversation with Josh Horowitz, del Toro opened up on his original plans for the team, revealing some of the characters he intended to include as part of the roster.

"I took a little bit of the opening of the Alan Moore Constantine. And I took the dynamics between [Abby Arcane] and Swamp Thing, and I took the sort of revelatory moments when Deadman gets into a body, how he would experience the consciousness of that being," the Hellboy director explains. "And one of my all time’s favourites is the demon Etrigan. I love that character."

"Zatanna is really, for me, another character that is really effortlessly powerful and interesting," del Toro continued. "Trying to mix that with Klarion the Witch Boy...I was [always] a DC guy."

It's hard to shake the feeling we may have missed out on something special with del Toro's Justice League Dark, though there was also a time the filmmaker was developing a Hulk TV series for Marvel. That never came to be, either, and we've yet to see the prolific director make his presence felt in the Marvel or DC Universes (there must be something horror-related he can helm for either company).

Del Toro always seems like such a nice guy and like a total nerd in the best way. I just watched Nightmare Alley and basically loved it.

@WakandaTech - Man, I hope they do Blade justice. Its one of my GOAT characters. Please dont make it a funny, watered down MCU family movie number 2545454.

@Spawnnn -

Yeah that is what concerns me but kind of getting ready for the watered down Blade

@WakandaTech - Blade is one of my most anticipated movies, but my main concern has already been realised - they made Blade American again. But at least they have gotten a good actor to play him.

@Spawnnn - they can’t do Blade justice with a pg13 rating no way

@WakandaTech - the fact that Hamada is giving Emerald Fennell full creative control over a Zatanna film (her words not mine) has me all sorts of hyped for that one. Promising Young Woman was [frick]ing revelatory.

The new DC Boss should bring him back. If not for JLD then for something else. Let him make a standalone like Joker.

PAIN knowing this won’t happen. WB missed out on a GOAT. Saw Nightmare Alley last night. Amazing film. My favorite film him now.

With all the L's DC has had for the past few years you would think they would throw money to Del Toro to develope this🤦

Fail.

@AmazingFILMporg - that’s why I feel that even after this Discovery acquisition, we won’t see many positive changes.

Ehhh
Not sure we missed out on anything special.
Just another LOST FILM that lives greater in the audiences imaginations than it would have in the reality on the screen.

This is the most slam dunk thing WB had but they messed it up. This is like the blazers passing up on Jordan bad.
