Back in 2020, we got word that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams and his wife and Bad Robot partner, Katie McGrath, were set to head-up a Justice League Dark series for WarnerMedia's HBO Max streaming service.
Updates have been few and far between since, and we now know why.
In their report on Abrams' upcoming HBO Max series, Duster, THR confirms that both Justice League Dark and The Shining spin-off, Overlook, have now been scrapped.
The latter is being shopped around to other buyers, but it sounds like this is the end of the road for the mystical heroes of the JLD.
This probably shouldn't come as much of a surprise after the recent DCU shake-up, and even prior to James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over as new DC Studios co-heads, the Zatanna movie and Constantine series - which would reportedly have tied in to JLD - were shelved.
Even though the writing was on the wall, this is still a disappointing development. Fans have been waiting to see the Justice League Dark assemble on screen for a long time, so there was a lot of excitement for this show.
A Swamp Thing movie from James Mangold is currently in the works, and we know that Keanu Reeves is set to reprise the role of Constantine for a sequel to his 2005 film, so perhaps we will eventually see another iteration of the team in the DCU.
