Midnight Mass has been streaming on Netflix since Friday, but best stop reading now if you haven't reached the end yet, as creator Mike Flanagan has broken down the show's devastating dénouement during a new interview.

SPOILERS ahead!

We're not going to touch on every major twist here, but in the final episode, Erin (Kate Siegel) uses the last of her strength to tear through "The Angel's" wings with her knife while he's draining her blood. The creature then attempts to flee the island before the sun rises, but we don't actually see what becomes of it.

When Leeza (Annarah Cymone), who had regained the use of her legs after ingesting the vampire's blood, tells Warren (Igby Rigney) that she can no longer feel her legs, we (and many others, evidently) took this as a sign that the ravenous beast must have been turned to ash before he was able to reach shelter. However, Mike Flanagan has now revealed that he never intended to make the vampire's ultimate fate clear.

“We’re not saying he died… Our hope really there was just to say that Leeza’s concentration in her blood had begun to tip back, that she was going to be OK," he tells The Wrap. "We didn’t want it to confirm about The Angel, in that way that you can never kill fanaticism, it’ll always kind of come back. But I love that that’s what it meant to you!”

Yeah... the finale of Midnight Mass is bleak enough as it is, so we're going to go ahead and assume the creepy bastard was fried!

What do you guys make of the ending and the series as a whole? Check out our review here, and drop us a comment in the usual place.

I didn't really have to the intent initially to watch this, but this sounds like it could be more interesting than I thought

Midnight Mass I will watch tonight. NOW at 94% at Rotten Tomatoes. Horror was always my first love at the theaters.

"An ambitious meditation on grief and faith that is as gorgeous as it is unsettling, Midnight Mass's slow boil is a triumph of terror that will leave viewers shaking - and thinking - long after the credits roll."

@vegetaray - AWESOME! I thought Malignant was a great movie needs to be seen at the theaters. I gave it 4.5 Stars / 5 Stars.

I actually watched it twice. I see all horror movies at the theater good or bad.

Knee jerk reaction was that the “Angel” had died as this built up genre canon says that when the original vampire dies then everyone affected by it either dies or has the disease die off in their systems…

But I guess you can say that the healing abilities Leeza had as a result of taking the sacrament, just wore off as she hadn’t continued to drink the blood…

My head canon says the “Angel” died though…Can’t really see how possibly revisiting this particular story, to continue it that is, would cover anything this season didn’t already…Just seems like it ended nicely where it is…Horribly dark ending, but a definitive ending mone the less…

Watched this last night and it was great. I had planned on just giving it a few episodes but ended up finishing it this morning.

Nearly half way through. Super slow burn but the tension towards the end keeps you wanting more.

This was 500% better than this year's American Horror Story that has a mildly similar plot

Mike Flanagan out did Stephen King's Salems Lot.
Mike Flanagan should be the only person allowed to adapt and change King's material. He killed it with Gerald's Game and Doctor Sleep. He made Midnight Mass which is superior to Salem's Lot the book. If only he could've done IT or The Stand as well...
