BOX OFFICE: Disney's BIG HERO 6 leaves INTERSTELLAR In The Dust

Well, it was actually pretty close...but I really wanted to use that dust reference. As expected, Disney's animated superhero adventure has surpassed Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan's sci-fi epic at the box office over the weekend. Get the numbers after the jump.

Christopher Nolan's Interstellar scored a very respectable $52M over the weekend, but coming out on top with their biggest stand-alone weekend ever (topping a $49m debut for Wreck It Ralph last year) was Disney Animation, with a $56.2M for Big Hero 6. This won't come as too much of a surprise, and the exact number predictions were actually pretty spot on too. Interstellar's second place spot marks the first time a Christopher Nolan flick has not debuted at #1 since Insomnia back in 2002. Though popular enough with most critics, the movie didn't get the universal acclaim many expected it would, and this may have hurt it slightly. Then again, it was going up against a Disney cartoon about superheroes featuring an adorable, pudgy robot -- did it ever stand a chance? When last has a Disney animation not debuted at #1? Also Interstellar was kind of disappointing story-wise.

Doesn't surprise me; kids movies always do well and there's not a large audience for thinker films anymore.

@ Nomis- Exactly. I wanna see it again already!

"What are you doing?"

"Docking"

CUE HEART POUNDING MUSIC AND AMAZING SCENE

So much to love about the movie... The way Nolan visualizes the fifth dimension, the Inception-Like space station, Damon's character (Who was one sympathetic asshole), the wormhole scene, the black hole, the oceanic planet and Ice planet... Just about everything was amazing.

Oh yeah, TARS and CASE FTW!

I'll probably escape some night this week to see Interstellar. Big Hero 6 ain't really my thing from the looks of it, but I'm sure its good.

I loved Interstellar, but I had issues with it. Ending...I dunno. It both worked and didn't on some levels.

Hardly a "thinker" film. Many of the themes (love, ghosts) lacked subtlety. Complaints aside, the movie was amazing. The hard science angle was wonderful. My favorite Nolan film right now.

@MrCBM56

I loved the testimonies as well. I'm convinced those were actual dustbowl survivors from the 1920s(?)

Interstellar was amazing. But I agree with @RorMachine. In rarity however, the imperfection of the film is what in a way makes it better. The phenomena is meant to be philosophically bending and the way you perceive what little, or complex information is given, alters your overall feeling.

But besides from clunky dialogue (and rather dull dialogue), and the deformed science- This is one of the most beautifully ambitious movie I've ever seen. Can't wait to see it again.

I had no idea what the hell Big Hero 6 was.. then yesterday my 7 year old and I had nothing to do and he saw a picture of the movie as we walked past it. And asked to see it... so I wasn't expecting much but thought.. its quality time to spend with my son. TO my surprise though.. this movie was FANTASTIC... the villain was by far one of my favorites.. this whole movie was very good both emotionally and action wise, not to mention the Stan Lee cameo was awesome! I recommend everyone go see this movie.. its GREAT! and I loved the plot twists.

Murph was the only one played by an actress. The other people were actual Dustbowl survivors.

Anyone else love the not-so-subtle theme of the only endangerment of this manned mission is men itself?

Big Hero 6 with a lot more showings, because of the runtime.

You shouldn't go into a film thinking you "need" to see it. That's often said but it's hyperbole more than anything. If you want to see it... See it.
