Ever since Walt Disney Pictures purchased Marvel Studios, fans have been hopeful of a superhero team up with Marvel and Pixar. And while Pixar may not be involved, according to Blue Sky Disney, supported by The Grid, details for what'll be the first Disney animated Marvel film have hit. Including the project's director & release date, read below!

Walt Disney Animation‘s upcoming "Big Hero 6," about a heroic superhero team, is currently an open writing assignment, with no scribe currently attached to the project. The film will be produced by Kristina Reed.

The slot that is set for 2014 has been set aside for Don Hall's project. Don Hall is the director of "Big Hero 6." In fact, he's the one that pitched the idea to Lasseter, who liked his take on the subject and approved it for development. Now, it's not fully green lit. The project is story boarded and has been deemed strong enough to tentatively put in the production line.

According to Marvel.com and Wikipedia, the Big Hero 6 superteam first appeared in Sunfire and Big Hero 6 #1 in 1998, although they were created by Steven T. Seagle and Duncan Rouleau in the pages of Alpha Flight, volume 2. When the Japanese government wanted a team of state-sanctioned super-heroes at their disposal, a top-secret consortium of politicians and business entities known as the Giri was formed to recruit and train potential superhuman operatives for "Big Hero 6." What do you think?

Haven't heard of this team before but they look like they would translate better into an animated movie than some of the more mainstream heroes so as long as the script is strong it could be pretty good. I'm also hoping it will be traditional 2D animation rather than CGI to differentiate itself from The Incredibles but that's probably asking too much.

Big waste. Why them? Why not New Warriors? They're better

This seems like a good idea. Either these guys or the Power Pack would translate pretty well into an animated movie.

sounds cool, and the fact that is animated will help to absorb a little of the silliness of the concept :P

Fanboys are about the most self-centered group of people on the planet...

THIS ISN'T INTENDED FOR YOU!

It looks like a great way for Disney/Marvel to reach 4-12 year olds. Guess what FANBOYS, parents buy their kids stuff all the time and those same kids grow up and spend money!

Genius marketing strategy to grow the Marvel fan base.

Great work Marvel!

Why this team? I've never heard of them but maybe it'll be good.

I was kinda hoping they'd turn 'Power Pack' into an animated movie. I think it'd be pretty awesome!

J0hnb1aze: Why shouldn't Marvel fans be a bit disappointed about this news? They've seen DC producing a series of PG-13 films that have done a FANTASTIC job bringing some of DC's most popular stories starring their most popular characters to life. Why shouldn't Marvel fans want to see animated films that do the same thing for some of the many great stories Marvel has given us over the years? The formula is laid out for a nice profitable little side business for Disney/Marvel.

I'm not slighting the idea of making kid-friendly stories. My thing is that they should do this with more familiar characters that kids may already know, or whose books are readily attainable at bookstores like Barnes & Noble or comic book stores. I've been reading Marvel for around thirty years and I've never heard of this "Big Hero 6" group. Why not something with a more familiar team? There are lots of classic stories that would make kid-friendly movies that all fans of those characters could enjoy.

I'm far from one of the true "fanboy" types, who wants to see everything comic-related as dark, 'gritty', mean, and violent-as-humanly possible. I agree that we absolutely need to do more to encourage kids to discover superheroes and give us a new generation of fans. My point here is that it's easier to do this with characters they may know from TV or live-action movies, or from books they got from older siblings or friends.

Cherrybomb: I would LOVE to see a Power Pack movie, especially if it's based on the early Simonson stories. Great stuff, kid-friendly, and could well be the basis for a TV series and/or more.
ManThing

weird. It kind of looks like the roster for that original Big Hero 6 team was weak. Sunfire and Silver Samurai are pretty cool, but who are the rest of those clowns?

I would hope that they trick out the roster with some good classic characters.

@ Cherrybomb: agreed. I would love to see an animated Power Pack show or even a Power Pack movie.

They were featured in Spider-man: Ends of the Earth. That's the first I ever heard of them. Anyway, not really interested in this. I'd rather see a sequel to the Incredibles get a higher priority.

I am familiar with Big Hero Six and it could make a good young adult movie, I think. I think they'd have to use the second incarnation of the team, though. Rights for Silver Samurai are held by Fox. He's going to be in The Wolverine, if I remember correctly.

This is an obscure group, but there are lots of Japanese properties that the kiddies love, so doing something with that kind of flavor makes sense, though I'm surprised Power Pack didn't get made first.

I wish Marvel would do more PG-13 animated movies. I loved Hulk VS.

@ Comicb00kguy:

First of all, great usage of 0's! Second of all, great points!

"My thing is that they should do this with more familiar characters that kids may already know, or whose books are readily attainable at bookstores like Barnes & Noble or comic book stores."
- Isn't Marvel doing that now with the new Spiderman cartoon on Disney XD as well as the Avengers one?

I'm with you 100% that DC is ahead of the game when it comes to animated movies. But that being said, I haven't watched 5 seconds of any DC cartoon movies....

I'd love to see Civil War made in to a Pixar flick!
