If you've been following the saga of Warner Bros. failed attempt to make a live-action remake of Akira, you will know that the studio has gone through at least three directors. Below you you will see concept art that Tommy Lee Edwards created for Albert Hughes' ("The Book of Eli") version. Then there is Tim Flattery's artwork, which I believe was intended for Irish short film director, Ruairi Robinson. Lastly, there is Rodolfo Dimaggio artwork of Tetsuo's big finale, the bowling alley, the freeway, Ducati Demolitore, and the Marquee bar. I'm speculating, but the art seems to fit with Jaume Collet-Serra's ("Orphan") vision.

Kaneda is a bar owner in Neo-Manhattan who is stunned when his brother, Tetsuo, is abducted by government agents led by The Colonel. Desperate to get his brother back, Kaneda agrees to join with Ky Reed and her underground movement who are intent on revealing to the world what truly happened to New York City thirty years ago when it was destroyed. Kaneda believes their theories to be ludicrous but after finding his brother again, is shocked when he displays telekinetic powers.

Ky believes Tetsuo is headed to release a young boy, Akira, who has taken control of Tetsuo’s mind. Kaneda clashes with The Colonel’s troops on his way to stop Tetsuo from releasing Akira but arrives too late. Akira soon emerges from his prison courtesy of Tetsuo as Kaneda races in to save his brother before Akira once again destroys Manhattan island, as he did thirty years ago.

It may look like Akira, but plot-wise and character-wise it was not Akira.

if it's a direct adaptation all the actors should be asian, but it wasn't. if anything it shouldn't be either asian or white if it's supposed to be "neo york" in the future. it should be a multi cultural cast.

concept art for Jokers Bowling Alley! You won't see that scene in the anime! If you haven't read it do yourself a favor and get the 6 book collection. It's phenomenal

I highly recommend it. Akira is GREAT! the anime is okay, for the time it was amazing, but animation has improved... but the comic is INCREDIBLY epic.

YES it couldve been awesome... but YES they needed an asian cast... even though i say that, I created this from film footage

I think if they did make an Akira movie, it should be an origin tale of the Original Akira. It would be cool to get a perspective on the world leading up to the apocalyptic explosion. It would also avoid any comparisons that would undoubtedly morph the movie into a bastardized adaptation in the fans' eyes.

I'm thinking something like what two part mini series from Animatrix did for the Matrix, only reversed, with the live action story starting first.

i don't think they "need" an asian cast to do this movie, i mean it's not like being japanese had a lot to do with the personality nad motivations of the characters..

WB should use the unused concept art for Man of Steel 2. Imagine a hyper realistic Superman film which sends him into a dirty gritty future and pits him against Akira which for this version is modified to fit in the movie. For ways on sending Superman to the future, I was thinking Lex Luther builds this dangerous time machine device and it's about to explode when Superman flies into it. Then the story escalates from there and Superman also meets Joe played by Joseph-Gordon Levitt who was in the movie Looper and he is kinda his partner in the movie like Batman & Robin. Yeah they can definitely alter the plot and make it fit for Man of Steel 2. That way we can see Man of Steel 2 in theaters by the end of this year or next year. Already a great hyper futuristic story here all they need to do is add Superman and some characters to make it work. Oh and Doomsday should be the villain except he should be some tough biker dude and one of Akira's henchmen. Then the future Lex Luther is a hologram like the Wizard of OZ and he rules this magical fantasy world in another dimension like OZ. So plot detail wise both worlds collide and Superman would be in danger. Then Superman finds out his powers don't work in the future cause he is powered by the Sun and the future Earth is powered by the moon. So Batman appears on a flying bicycle device that transformers into a megazord to fight evil. I think this idea would be awesome.

I seriously believe that Akira would be pretty much as we imagined it for one reason:

Warner Bros. may have been messing up with some of the DC properties, but in terms of other graphic novels, they're on a roll.

Neo-manhattan or whatever is just a dumb concept, but this concept art makes me so mad that they didn't go through with it. I mean, look at it! It's spot on for an adaptation but the whole characters and setting was just wrong which could've easily been fixed.

I'm still holding out for a live-action Ghost in the Shell from Steven Spielberg and a live-action Battle Angel Alita from James Cameron. Both own the rights to those movies...and James, give up on Avatar 2 and get the ball rolling on Battle Angel!!!

Chronicle was pretty much a loose American version of Akira, they used a lot from the film, especially during the last third act, from the hospital fight scene, to Andrew looking like Akira right at the end and letting out a huge scream like Akira did in the movie.

Akira is too big for a single movie.
15 years ago people who didnt knew the manga, watched the anime and went out of the theater scratching their heads.
maybe a trilogy would work. but we know thats impossible for such "risky"story/theme as the manga.
plus most of the ideas from mangas like AKIRA or GITS already have a western interpretation on modern cinema.
