PLOT/STORY
The first two episodes of The Legend Of Korra focuses on patience and responsibility. Korra is a completely different character from Avatar Aang. She’s overconfident, brash and eager but she lacks respect and restraint. Korra is of an age where she needs to start learning all of the bending techniques, she is good with fire, water and earth but has no skill in the form of air bending. We get introduced to Aang and Katars’s son Tenzin who is going to be Korra’s teacher in Airbending, Korra wants to rush into things but Tenzin is trying to teach her that patience’s is a virtue.
I like that writers and creators made this world a little bit more modern, the benders of the modern world have new techniques and new types of sports as well. Avatar Aang and Fire Lord Zuko did a good job of creating this new “Republic City” which is a place of unity; all benders are welcome in this new peaceful city. As things are changing and evolving there are also new threats and villains rising, one of them known as Amon who is voiced by Steve Blum seems to be a revolutionary who wants create equality by getting rid of all benders, these “chi blockers” are very mysterious but I am very interested to see how they will challenge Korra and this new world of peace.
ANIMATION/CHARACTER DESIGNS
The animation is top notch, it’s good to see a cartoon that still does 2d animation with all these other new cartoon series switching over to 3d/cg. It felt like I was watching a high budget anime movie, from the fight scenes, to the facial expressions all the way down the simple hand movements and walking all looked spectacular. The character designs are very sleek and intriguing; I like how the cultures have evolved. The police system is made up of mostly metal benders which have very cool looking metal armor on. Even the backgrounds are something to admire, also the unique animals such as Korra’s polar bear dog “Naga”, to all types of crazy and wacky creatures add flair to this promising new series.
VOICE ACTING/ DIALOGUE
The voice acting is great, Korra sounds about 13 to 15 and the voice actress does a good job of conveying her eager and enthusiastic nature. The dialogue is great, it’s funny witty and just enjoyable to listen on a whole. Since the is a also a brand new series, you don’t have to worry about comparing new voice actors for an already established character like you would for say Batman or Spiderman, everything just sounds natural. So the voices should be easy to adjust to and when you have an awesome voice actor like Steve Blum voice a villain or any character surely we are in for a treat.
MUSIC SCORE & SOUND EFFECTS
Just like the first series, Legend Of Korra music has a very eastern feel to it, the music score is very fitting even when they are in western settings. The sound effects are also well down, from when the characters are bending to whatever else may be going on in the show.
FINAL VERDICT
Overall this was a strong start to this new series. It established a lot of things and set up brand new material to come, although there are still some unanswered questions from Avatar The Last Airbender, I hope they will be answered in The Legend Of Korra. 10 out 10 for me.
