Tommy Pickles and his friends are about to make their way back to the silver screen in a big way in a Paramount Players-produced live-action/CG hybrid Rugrats movie and according to The Hollywood Reporter, the film has found its director in Diary of a Wimpy Kid helmer David Bowers.

The original Rugrats series, which ran from 1991-2004, remains one of Nickelodon's most successful shows to date and it ultimately spawned a spinoff series, titled All Grown Up! that ran from 2003-2008, and three successful films: The Rugrats Movie, Rugrats in Paris: The Movie, Rugrats Go Wild.

The upcoming Rugrats movie will be the babies' fourth theatrical adventure, but their first where any characters will be depicted in live-action.

The film is slated to open on January 29, 2021.

I mean, is it gonna be real babies or what? I'm imagining it as babies with CG mouths like they used to do with animals. Any which way this is done, it's going to be awful.

I'm not against making live actions versions of things for the most part, but Rugrats was my God damn childhood. I grew up Rugrats I'm a 90s kid. This property should not be messed with.

When will people learn that some things just can't be turned into live action? They're cartoons for a REASON.

Unlike literally everyone else commenting, I'm gonna wait till I see what they are actually going for before passing judgment. Every once in a while a movie that looks god awful on paper and should never have been made, actually ends up being really good. The Lego Movie has no business being as great as it was, a Detective Pikachu movie shouldn't have produced as overwhelmingly positive a reception as it has from it's great looking trailers. Sometimes the right creative team gets the right project at the right time and crafts a quality film that goes above and beyond the bad idea that spawned it. I grew up a Nick kid from the early 80's through till they started making Content I didnt like in the 2000s like Fairly Odd Parents and stuff like that. I grew up with Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, Spike, Suzy, Angelica and Dil. Rugrats was what made so many kids of my generations imaginations so active and fun. I loved Rugrats, and I'll give them the benefit of the doubt until i see what they are actually going for. Who knows, this could be something special. If I was behind the camera I'd be trying to capture the tone and feel of Honey I Shrunk The Kids.

I'm surprised we haven't got more "raping my childhood" comments.
