MarkyMark Reacts To The First Teaser For Wright's Reed's ANT-MAN

It's Marky Mark, again, *sigh* and I'm here to move you! In lieu of the recent release of our first good look at Ant-Man, the Marvel audience has become divided over the quality of the teaser. "Too serious", "not enough 'funny,'" are all things I'm going to end right here in my editorial.

Editorial Opinion

When I first saw the new teaser for Marvel's Ant-Man, I was rather underwhelmed.

Wait, don't stop reading. Just because my opinion was different than yours doesn't mean we have to be stubborn.

Anyways, back to the topic at hand for those who stayed, the teaser was underwhelming. For me, it felt cliched, uninspired, and like any other "dark/gritty/grown-up" PG-13 superhero Nolan-ripoff flick. The music was dramatic, there was an emotional father/daughter moral somewhere in the trailer, the world was at stake, etc. The ONLY thing about the trailer the stuck in my head for a while as humorous was Rudd's "is it too late to change the name?" Inside laughs are more important than hilarity, take notes studios.

Now, I do realize that this is indeed a trailer, it can't represent the movie as a whole. However, there are a many stubborn on the Internet who are in conflict about this trailer and assume it to be the atmosphere of the movie. I personally disagree, given how a trailer is meant to SELL the movie and not necessarily represent the quality of the movie.

Many found the Ant-Man trailer itself to be bland and okay, a few hated it, and a few absolutely fell in love with it.

Complaints such as "boy, everyone used to complain how Marvel movies had too much fun, and now they're complaining because it's grown-up?!?!" are highly unmerited. Perhaps many disliked it because the "seriousness" that the trailer seemed to show was bland, unengaging, tired, and very Marvel (meaning no real deviation or spontaneity in humor). I felt that way, and I know many others felt that way as well. Perhaps if the movie delves into subtle humor sprinkled in conversation and character interactions like with the Russo' Captain America: The Winter Soldier or Snyder's Watchmen, then I will enjoy such lighthearted moments. Anything else is either void of humanity or so "tongue-in-cheek forced down your throat" that you'll choke to death.

Fan biggotry and reactions aside, I will now elaborate on what I did, in fact, enjoy. The scale was awesome, and I think we're in for some really awesome and unusual fight sequences. Hopefully the father and daughter part of the movie will be interesting and feel like an actual family relationship (I am slightly intrigued on how that will work with the "second chances" theme). If the rumors are true and honest (unlike some of Marvel's movie rumors in the past), then I am looking forward to a 70s styled heist plot.

All in all, I give the trailer a 7/10. Not too special, neither horrendous nor fantastically unique. Cautiously optimistic, I will go and see this movie as soon as I can.

The next evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time with Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man.” Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world. Starring Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, Judy Greer, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Pena, John Slattery, and Hayley Atwell, Ant-Man is set to be released on July 17th, 2015.

Well at least that shot of Pym at his computer can be used for a Batman Beyond fan trailer...

But in all seriousness, I liked the trailer. Granted I think that it could have used a little more flair kind of like the test footage from 2012, but regardless I thought it was good.

...the world was at stake..."

Honestly, I thought the teaser made it clear that the stakes were small scale and more personal. Pym's line about "It's not about saving the world...it's about saving THEIR world" definitely makes it seem like the emotional center will be about a farther/daughter relationship. Hopefully that means a change from the cgi-fest 3rd act in most MCU movies so far.

@markymarkrises

I mentioned something similar yesterday. Notice the difference in the Dark Knight trailer, it has most if not all the jokes/humor from the movie. It's more lighthearted and fun than it is dark and gritty.

While, this trailer for Captain America Winter Soldier is more dark and gritty than it is lighthearted and fun, with really only one joke towards the end.

Does this mean you'll stop complaining about it in every comments thread? Sweet.

How many "Nolan ripoff" CBMs do you (make yourself) believe there are?

@MarkyMarkRises

i stoped reading after the first paragraph, bc your not saying anything you havent already said in previous threads. so in my opinion this was a wasted of article space. in my other humble opinion, please shut up

@OmegaDaGod

you are absolutely correct sir, i think people keep expecting this to be a "FULL" trailer, where its just a teaser. there not gonna show you everything in a teaser, or even in a trailer. good work my friend

You used the wrong trailer in your article (Maybe you mentioned this), you should at least put Marvel's trailer in your article not the "Fixed" one....

The tone of the 'Fixed" trailer is everywhere too, and the music throws me off, especially with the clapping, I don't think Marvel would use such generic Rock, especially after the amazing soundtracks we've seen from them.

Also, I thought the REAL trailer was great, it touched on issues that we've never seen in a Marvel movie and it also has the action and humor that you would expect from Marvel.

We're finally getting Ant-Man in the MCU!! Can't wait

Here is the REAL Marvel trailer that they released. Not a fan edit.

DrKinsolving
DrKinsolving - 1/8/2015, 5:52 AM
Also, it's a TEASER. So, why would you compare it to other TRAILERS. Compare it to other TEASERS.

I know, the FAN Edit says it's a trailer though but the Marvel OFFICIAL release says it's a TEASER.

Which means, It is a TEASER.

Words mean something.

The TEASER trailer was good, especially since they finished principle shooting not too long ago.

I stated this before, it's going to be heavy on the father/daughter relationship. Pym is trying to earn Janet's faith back in him, and Lang is trying to live up to the faith Cassie places in him.

Compare it to the Man of Steel Teaser, Ant-Man had more footage than the MoS teaser. Point being, judge it as a Teaser trailer, not the official trailer.

Also compared to The Dark Knight teaser, the Ant-Man teaser had actual footage.

This movie has been in production for 10 years; calling it a Nolan ripoff doesn't nearly summarize all the work put into the movie and how some of it's elements are seen in Interstellar.

Edgar Wright is no longer associated with this movie, no matter how bad anyone wants him to be. It's time people accepted this. It's honestly disrespectful to the film's new director to keep including Edgar Wright's name everywhere as if he's going to magically return and save the MCU. He bailed. He gave up. It doesn't matter who you blame for his departure, he is gone and Reed has taken charge.

This was the reaction from my wife, who only marginally follows CBMs: "Wow, Michael Douglas is in this?"

I think for casual fans, you got to see the stars. People LOVE Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lily. You know what they don't love? Ants. I think they did a good job introducing us to the human story and actors, and they can ramp up the "Marvel" aspects in future trailers once they've hooked the crowds.

Also, Marvel has a marketing machine like NO OTHER. By the time they are riding the Avengers bounce, Ant-Man will KILL at the box office.
