AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM Moves To Christmas 2023 While SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS Heads To March

As expected, Warner Bros. has pushed both Zachary Levi's Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Jason Momoa's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom back into 2023. Meanwhile, two other films are coming to theaters.

It looks like Jaume Collet-Serra's Black Adam will be the last DC film of the year, as Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. has pushed David F. Sandberg's Shazam! Fury of the Gods from this December to March 17, 2023.

That date was previously held by James Wan's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is now heading to Christmas 2023, where it will open in the same release window as its predecessor. The release date change was heavily rumored for weeks, but it's now been made official as the Jason Momoa-starrer needed additional time to complete post-production.

As for the Zachary Levi-fronted Shazam sequel, its move should be quite beneficial as it will now be able to open in premium format screens, including IMAX, and no longer has to compete with the juggernaut that is 20th Century Studios' Avatar: The Way of Water

Both release date shifts will likely be huge boons for the box office, as the first Aquaman grossed $1.148 billion globally back in 2018, while the original Shazam! racked up $366 million from its April 2019 opening. More recently, The Batman collected $770.8 million from the same March window, so WB is likely banking on Shazam 2 to receive a similar boost, and may be hoping it can reach the heights of the Matt Reeves-directed blockbuster.

In related news, WB has granted a theatrical release window for both New Line's House Party (December 9) and Lee Cronin's Evil Dead Rise (April 21, 2023).

so all we have from DC for the rest of the year is the Rock movie.
at least Shazam avoided being utterly destroyed.

@Spidey91 - oh yeah while I wasn’t the biggest fan of Avatar that movie is a juggernaut. And it’s sequel will probably do huge numbers too. It’s a safe move moving Shazam to March.

Good, I actually prefer Aquaman releasing in December. Like the first film, this will give it an advantage since it'll be the big scale adventure families will see during the holidays to escape the cold.

And Shazam doesn't have to compete with Avatar so that'll be good!

Just glad we're getting a Shazam sequel. I wasn't blown away by the first movie, but I'm really liking Levi in the role.

“the Jason Momoa-starrer needed additional time to complete post-production.”

Good. Take your time on the CGI. We don’t need more superheroes looking like she-hulk 🤢

Kinda expected Flash to take the December spot, but having Aquaman there fits much better.

Also, now that Aquaman releases after Flash again, does that mean we can expect Keaton's Batman there again?

Why drag this sorry excuse for a film comic book universe on any longer. Just release it all so we can focus on the hopefullty brighter future.

Seems like a good idea considering Avatar's release.

This gives them enough time to recast or completely drop Amber Heard from the movie.

Jokes aside, Shazam was probably going to be undercut by Avatar so this move makes sense. WB brought the release forward because of positive feedback from test screenings but I would like that movie to make all the money it can. The first film would have made a lot more if it wasn’t sandwiched between Captain Marvel and Endgame.

Avatar about to make a whole lot of money. Families looking to see a movie this Christmas aren’t going to have hardly any other options. In fact Disney about to have a stranglehold on all of November and December.
