SDCC '13: Geoff Johns Shares His Thoughts On A Potential AQUAMAN Movie

DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, who is also currently writing the Aquaman ongoing series for the company, expresses interest in a big screen adaptation starring the King of Atlantis and discusses how such a film would work.

With the success of Man Of Steel, we can expect more DC Comics characters to finally make their way to the big screen at some point in the near future. One character who has been suggested for his own film is Aquaman, who was once considered a ridiculous character until Geoff Johns began his "New 52" comic book run in 2011. That series shows just how much potential an Aquaman movie has, and in an interview with MTV at San Diego Comic-Con, Johns shares his thoughts on a possible film starring the King of Atlantis. "I'd love to see an Aquaman movie. I think he's a terrific character. People know him. The world is amazing. Working with Ivan Reis on 'Aquaman' and later Paul Pelletier, the visuals are exciting. The characters are exciting. There are creatures. Ninety percent of the oceans have never been seen by human eyes. Most of our threats come from space, but I also think that having threats come from the deep sea would be great to see."

Last month, it was reported that among the DC films Warner Bros. is considering are Wonder Woman and Aquaman. Perhaps the King of Atlantis will be featured in the planned Justice League movie after all? With both WB's panel and the Superman 75th Anniversary celebration (Man Of Steel star Henry Cavill is attending the latter) today, hopefully we'll hear something official regarding the future of DC on film shortly. Would you like to see an Aquaman movie?

It be very amazing to see! Visuals would be great if done correctly and Aquaman would finally get the respect he deserves! If portrayed similarly to his young justice, injustice, new 52, jlu counterparts, I'd love to see him! I could also see him leading the justice league. He's a born king, a leader. Itd make sense and be a great new change to the team.

Johns, people know Aquaman for diffeent reasons than they know Batman.

Aquaman is seen as a joke.

Also WBs would never let you involved in another movie. After the shit you pulled in that Green Lantern movie.

Aquaman is VERY bad ass. He is equivalent to THOR. A movie could kick ass...IF done right.

I don't want to hear "your thoughts on an Aquaman film", I want to see an Aquaman film.

As a fan, get your shit together DC.

Yet Marvel is going to do Namor first like they did Quicksilver before Flash...

Actually, we get 2 versions of Quicksilver before Flash. Maybe we'll get 2 versions of Namor before Aquaman. One from Marvel one from FOX to use in F4.

Aquaman based on his New 52 comic would be awesome. THe rivalry with him and Black Manta would be so cool to see if done right. Added in the Atlantean magic would be cool to see with the special effects.

I want to see a regal but gruff Aquaman who can rule the seas and act swiftly and mercilessly when needed to. In order to shake half a century of bad rep, he should just be an all out bad-ass.

Preferably he should look like a blend between these two on screen:

I'm worried that Aquaman may be too derivative of Thor.
Think about it, even the recent comics. Throne of Atlantis was a straight up rip-off of the plot to Avengers!
Anyway, i would love Aquaman on the big screen. Imagine fighting with a Trident!

I was thinking, instead of boring Origin stories for each characters ([frick] Marvel's formula), how about we start off right in the thick of it? Have the team already formed and working, but then spin off into Flashpoint! Have the movie forward to the alternate reality where they're all at each other's throats! Then at the end, we get to see our continuity streamlined, we're familiar with the characters themselves, and then in teh sequel, we'll get our team's "FIRST" mission, but without having to tread through the origins and all!

When Aquaman takes a dump does it come out like a long and stringy tailpipe like a goldfish???

These are the questions that must be asked in an Aquaman film.

Jon

Couple things:

I have read what Johns/Reis has done. I may not be a huge Johns fan but what he has done to Aquaman is great. I loved Throne of Atlantis. While I love Aquaman in the comics, the GA doesn't know how great he is in the comics because the GA doesn't read comics.

Now matter how much of a badass Aquaman is in the comics and Injustice, he is still a joke to general audience. Nobody buys comics. In a world between 7-8 billion people, only 8 million comics are sold a month and that's a combo of Marvel/DC/Dark Horse/Image and anyone else. The GA doesn't buy comics. You have to put yourself in the GA's shoes and not of the shoes of a comic book film.

Johns rewrote part of the GL script it's been said so yea he did more than visit the set.

Hellboy still has 2 live action films and 2 animated films than Aquaman has 1. That's 4 films for Hellboy and 0 for Aquaman.

Have a nice day watching Power Rangers on Netflix.

;P

Anyone saying different just doesn't know wtf they're talking about

And comparing Aquaman to Thor? Thor would make Aquaman his own personal goldfish. GTFO

Frankly, if DC ever plans to be even a little bit of a competitor to Marvel, they'll need their own studios. Because of how it stands now DC is starting to reach the point of no return in regards to CBMs.
