A Rundown Of 2011's Spoilers For THE AVENGERS

We had earlier reports from an unlikely source that a certain actress would be appearing in the movie, now Tom Hidddleston seemingly confirms at least a cameo. Plus, could a certain, cool Iron Man 2 "suitcase" return in The Avengers?

IS GWYNETH PALTROW IN THE AVENGERS?

Rumors first began when Paltrow was spotted on the New Mexico set. No official confirmation was given from Marvel Studios but a recent report from an Indian Newspaper stating that actors Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone would be providing voice-over talents for Paltrow (Pepper Potts) and Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark), respectively. Now, we have even stronger confirmation from one of the stars of the film, Tom Hiddleston. When asked to quickly respond with 1-word answers to describe each of his Avengers co-stars, the good people over at Just Jared slipped in Paltrow's name and Hiddleston comically described her as "Mister".

COULD TONY STARK'S SUITCASE ARMOR RETURN IN THE AVENGERS?

In the same interview with Just Jared that provided the strongest evidence yet that Gwyneth Paltrow will indeed appear in the movie, Tom Hiddleston also gave an interesting answer when asked to describe Robert Downey Jr. Hiddleston gave the answer of "Suitcase" possibly referring to a certain armor innovation from Iron Man 2?

IS JEFFREY WRIGHT PLAYING THANOS?
This bit of news came back in August that actor Jeffrey Wright was spotted on the Avengers Cleveland set. I actually tend to believe he was there, I mean, it's pretty hard to deny your location when people have laid eyes on you. The question is whether or not he was there to film scenes for The Avengers and if so, who will he be playing? The prevailing notion amongst the masses seem to lean towards Wright portraying Thanos.

WILL WE FINALLY SEE THE INFINITY GAUNTLET?
Arguably, the most powerful device in the Marvel Universe, the Infinity Gauntlet was first seen in Thor and was heavily showcased at San Diego Comic-Con. However, aside from a blink-and-you-missed-it appearance in Odin's Vault, we have yet to see the gauntlet make an appearance in another Marvel movie. Will The Avengers change that and is that an Infinity Gem in Loki's staff?

JUST WHO IS IN LOKI'S ARMY?
There have been some wild rumors about this one, featuring Marvel villain stalwarts the Skrulls, Kree, Atlanteans, Annihilus, Frost Giants, and the Phalanx. So far, this is the best picture we have to go on. For my money, that sure does look like one of the Phalanx....just sayin.

WILL AGENT COULSON DIE?

I tried to get some answers from Clark Gregg about who exactly is in Loki's army but he wasn't playing ball, lol. One thing I did manage to squeeze out of him was the fact that he is currently in talks to star in one of Marvel's films after The Avengers so I think it's safe to say he won't kick the bucket. Is he a Skrull, though.....

CAPTAIN AMERICA WILL LEAD THE TEAM.
Despite various cast members recently stating that all the superheroes are jockeying for a leadership role on the team, I think Chris Hemsworth let it slip out of the bag [@ 0:18] that Captain America does eventually lead the team, just like in the comic books. I like how Robert Downey Jr. tried to cover it up...too late Mr. Stark!

THE HULK WILL BE NAKED.

A tweet from Mr. Ruffallo warned moviegoers to prepare for giant bare-assed greeness when The Avengers finally drop this May.

THE LEVIATHAN IS INDEED A SEA-MONSTER.

It was first reported here and then later we received another report that the mysterious Leviathan in the Avengers is indeed a sea-monster. Now whether or not this is Fing Fang Foom, Giganto or the Midgard Serpent is anyone's guess.

NO OTHER HEROES WILL CAMEO.
Kevin Feige himself stated that no other heroes will cameo in the movie. I'm a little bummed by this news but that doesn't mean they won't be teased. Perhaps someone will reference the scientific work of Hank Pym or maybe Wakanda will be mentioned. Regardless, I'm sure we will get tons of Easter Eggs in the movie.

One thing's for sure though, the movie looks to be everything promised and then some.

Isn't Phalanx more of an X-Men thing though?

Great feature. And I'm all for the return of the Mark V suitcase armor, one of the best stuffs I've seen in the CBM universe today. (Sad that Iron Man 2 had it very shortly, but still, its appearance was one of the best moments of the movie for me.)

The suitcase is reference to the suitcase Tony Stark was walking around with in the scene where Loki and Thor return to asgard with the Cosmic Cube...the suitcase is the same one we saw in Thor that stores the cube.

Jeffery Wright as Thanos would be fantastic casting. That guy can play anyone in any role he is given to the tee.

My first thought when I saw that alien picture. I know they're not Avengers villains but that would be kinda freaky.

or even freakier . . .

I don't think there has ever been a true "confirmation" that Leviathon is an actual sea monster. There have been "speculative" reports and so-called confirmations. Not that it matters one way or the the other for me.

I am more than okay with Thanos being introduced in this film and to lead to a larger confrontation and the Infinity Gauntlet in the sequel. I don't think Wright is the right person for the role though. Too small to play a villain who is supposed to have a large, physically-imposing stature. Granted, there aren't really any quality actors out there who are that big, but like Bane, I hate to see them go to an under-sized actor who isn't as intimidating-looking as he should be. At least, get someone who is equal of stature to Thor when you are looking at casting Thanos.

Jeffrey Wright could be a pretty good choice for the voice of Thanos.

If he just plays a CIA agent, can we consider it a James Bond cross over?

Agree

Or perhaps James Earl Jones. =o)

@Ranger

I agree with you for the most part. Yes Jeffrey Wright is nowhere near in the range of physical proportions for Thanos. But the same thing goes with Bane as well: you can't find an (good) actor large enough to portray them. I mean, look how big Thanos is.

I think they'll use a CGI model for the big guy's torso and use Wright's head. I mean, he DOES look like a Thanos if you added a helmet, a skrull-ish chin, some gray/purple face makeup, and so on.

I am impressed that they've managed to keep the army's identity a secret. The question is, do they intend to keep it under wraps until the movie is released? That would be really difficult, though the makers of GODZILLA (1998) somehow managed to keep the look of the titular creature (other than a leaked black and white piece of concept art) a secret all the way up to opening day.

I think with junior novelizations and comic tie-ins, the secret will have to come out by March if not earlier.

Or maybe not. Some of these ancillary tie-ins can be quite sneaky and leave out important information, like the entire ending!

Yeah, Thanos will SURELY be CGI, or at least lots of prosthetic. Nobody is built like that.

@Seejay - Well, yes, Mr. Jones could do it, but THAT wouldn't invite comparisons to any other films, would it?

OH MY GOD WHY IS THIS PAGE FULL OF BATMAN AND AVENGER FANBOYS

How about this?

LET ALL HOPE THEY BOTH MAKE EXCELLENT FILMS IN SUMMER 2012

Huh? HOW ABOUT THAT YOU MORONS!?
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 12/27/2011, 10:56 AM
I am fine with them CGI'ing Thanos' physical stature, if it is done well. I was hoping they would be doing the same with Bane. Unfortunately, we now have a Bane who is less intimidating in stature than Batman and that doesn't bode well for me. Either CGI him some (would ruin Nolan's "realism" mentality) or get someone who is 6'3" or 6'4" who is in great shape. I just don't want to see a compromise between size and acting swinging drastically to one end of the spectrum, which I think they did in the case of Hardy and Bane, now that they didn't CGI more size to him.

Like I said, you aren't going to find any actors as big as Thanos is in the source material. That should go without saying, but there are actors like Michael Clarke Duncan who can act and have a large imposting stature that would be far more passable than a Jeffrey Wright. Not saying it should be Michael Clarke Duncan, just using him as an example.

I kind'a wish people would quit saying that Zak Penn wrote this script. There are multiple references including a podcast interview with Whedon himself (Making it with Riki Lindhome) saying that they completely did away with Penn's idea and rebuilt everything from the ground up. Hence the Whedon directed sequences in Thor & Captain America: The First Avenger. Sure, Penn wrote a script but it's not in use... at all.

Cool article, Julian. Loved your Clark Gregg interview. Might want to edit out those awkward pauses though. Just sayin' ;)

I'm actually a little more excited (but still cautiously) about this movie. If it's at least as well made as Iron Man, I'll be satisfied.

Like I've said, you click on any of the official wallpapers on the Avengers site, and every url starts with "i.annihil.us"
Thanos doesn't work for me. Regardless of the Infinity Gauntlet in Odin's Vault, nothing around that particular story or the cosmic power associated with it, has been in any way mentioned or alluded to even. That storyline is pretty expansive and involving. I don't think THE FIRST AVENGERS MOVIE would shove that in our faces, let alone the faces of the non-fans.

Wait. Wasn't Ruffalo kidding? I want to give Whedon and all involved the benefit of the doubt, but a naked Hulk?? C'mon...if that lasts more than a split second, I don't see how it could possibly NOT be giggle-inducing.

Well Viper's not in the Cap movie, and Titanium Man isn't in the first Iron Man, nor is Madame Masque. It could mean absolutely nothing. Not ruling Skrulls out, but they could be like the Shocker who shows up in just about every Spider-man game, but never in the movies.

If you look at the picture above (with the red circle) the guy in the background is carying the Infinity Gauntlet and it is huge. To wear that, if thats the size they stay with, Thanos would have to at least be the size of the Hulk for it to fit.

Ok...so I'm lookin at the blurry ass pics on the S.H.I.E.L.D. screens and when I look at the top one I can almost make out a humanoid figure crouched down. Now if this is the case then it also appears that this figure has 2 very large pointy ears! I'm calling Skrulls!!
