Avengers: Age of Ultron wasn't quite dealt a knockout blow on Saturday by the Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao fight, but it certainly made a dent in the sequel's opening weekend. That and other sporting events are being blamed for the movie not managing to beat the record set by The Avengers back in 2012, but the follow-up has still exceeded expectations.
Disney predicted that the opening weekend haul would be around the $187 million mark, but business ended up picking up yesterday, giving Avengers: Age of Ultron a mightier total of $191.3 million. It now holds the record for the second highest North American opening of all-time.
Dave Hollis, Disney's distribution chief, says that these numbers are a testament to the "extraordinary achievements of Marvel," as well as the vast resources of Disney. "We are in a great place. And if someone didn't see Ultron Saturay night, they will see it today or next week. And overseas, in local currency, we are pacing 31 percent ahead of the first Avengers."
We're still awaiting updated international nimbers, but the sequel has surpassed the $630 million mark and exceeded the final amounts made by Captain America: The First Avenger ($371 million), Thor ($449 million), Iron Man ($583 million), and Iron Man 2 ($622 million) in just 12 days of release.
