With Tomorrowland, Pitch Perfect 2, and Mad Max: Fury Road all now in theaters, this weekend was pretty hectic at the North American box office. To keep things simple, we'll just focus on Avengers: Age of Ultron to begin with as that is the movie we all really care about, right?
The Marvel Studios sequel breezed past the $400 million mark at the domestic box office this weekend, and has also hit another milestone in China where it has so far grossed over $210 million. That gives Avengers: Age of Ultron, a current worldwide haul of an impressive $1.263 billion, making it the second highest grossing superhero movie of all-time behind only The Avengers.
It's too soon to say whether it will end up surpassing the first movie, but analysts recently predicted that it could finish its run with around $1.6 billion. Stay tuned over the next few weeks.
Unfortunately, the amazing Mad Max: Fury Road still hasn't earned enough to justify a sequel. Its $212 million worldwide haul is good, but with a budget of $150 million and tens of millions spent on promotion, it could be a while before we get any solid news on a follow-up. Brad Bird's disappointing Tomorrowland may have been #1 this weekend, but it's taken an underwhelming $32.2 million domestically, and even less than that internationally. Have you seen it?
