I don't know any of the contenders for Loki's army so I don't care. I would love if they were an army of mercenaries or pirates and if their nature were a cross between cosmic/technological and magical/mythological sides of the MCU.

Heh, I've said something similar on Twitter. Well, we already know who the villain is, it's Loki. What I said on twitter is that it's not important who the army is, after all, they are just soldiers, what matters is who is actually controlling that army. The finale of the film will be big, and it will set everything for Phase 2.

Yeah we already know Loki is the main villain and we'll see how treacherous he can be. The aliens matter but not that much. They need to be good warriors and in big numbers to pose a real threat to the Avengers but let's face it they're just punching bags in the end which more than likely Loki will betray to get away

Kinda matters, I mean it won't effect a whole lot enjoyment wise, but it might effect the plot quite a bit depending on where they come from, who sent them, what they can/can't do etc. They MIGHT just be used as hero cannon fodder as you suggest but I actually hope not, that could end up like a Star Wars prequel type deal with those faceless, easily destroyed robots. I hope these guys are tough and have something about them.

It does matter but not earth-shattering "MATTER"!

Whoever it is will propel the story into the 2nd AVENGERS movie I hope.

All I know is WHEDON has outdone himself with this
SUPERBOWL trailer!

ASTOUNDING!!!!!!!!!!

I am exceedingly positive THE AVENGERS is gonna
BLOW us out the back of the theater and I'm gonna
CRY LIKE A BABY...GIANT OLD MAN that I am!

LOL

First - the trailer was amazing! Maybe the best preview to come out in years!
Second - it does matter who the army is. In the coming months we are going to see movie after movie of aliens. From Battleship to Prometheus. The army in the Avengers needs to stand out. They need to be a threat that we recognize and respect so that their inclusion in the Marvel U is worthy of the Avengers and leads to new story lines.

I agree Ror. They can't simply be cannon fodder and I didn't mean to imply that. What I meant is that I think whoever it is, it looks like they will be integrated perfectly into what looks to be a great film. I don't think the name of that race is important.

Sorry bleed. =D

To a certain extent, it does matter. If Marvel is going to explore the cosmic side, this is the doorway to it.

But on the other hand, like you said Hawks, it doesn't really matter. The fact that we could say that there's an Avengers movie actually happening, and that its a few months away, is what matters.

Great read Hawks!!

[frick] YOU MEAN IT DOESNT MATTER?

thats like saying lets have a spiderman movie with him going agaist shocker the whole movie

the right villains are just as important as the heroes
BIGBMH
BIGBMH - 2/6/2012, 4:34 PM
I agree. Basically whoever it is, it's pretty much just going to be "Loki's army." I don't think the choice of who they are will really affect the story of this movie very much.

um i hate to be a party pooper, but you guys are amp'ed up on a trailer. I am pretty sure all of you were acting the same way when you saw the star wars episode 1,2,3 trailers and we all know how that turned out. lets just all calm down and hope marvel doesn't screw up like it does 90% of the time. like i said i want it to be good so they keep making more movies.
DDD
DDD - 2/6/2012, 4:34 PM
Even though I have THE FIRE DEMONS of MUSPELLHEIM
as my theory it seems to me like it's looking
more and more like THANOS' army and that THANOS
will show up at the end of THE AVENGERS movie, like
the rumor from LATINO REVIEW.

The more I look at the aliens from the trailer the
more it seems like their armor is kinda gold in color.
It just looks dingy from the shadows. Their skin
is blueish and they have 3 forward-facing toes.

If it is THANOS' hordes it DOES MATTER, for obvious
reasons! This would bring a lot of the plot lines
from all the AVENGERS solo movies all together and
introduce THANOS and the INFINITY GAUNTLET into the
mix.

WICKEDNESS!!!!!!!

So it REALLY does matter!

I just want to see a new GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY
movie and a NOVA movie, bringing in THANOS and
THE INFINITY GAUNTLET and of course ADAM WARLOCK!

I'm an outer space nut! Love ALIENS in SPACE!
lol

DDD: What difference does it make what name they give Thanos' army? These could be Skrulls in everything but appearance. They could be called Badoon and actually be responsible every action the Kree ever did in the comics.

sKeemAn: Yes and no. They don't have to be a major name from the Marvel Universe since the majority of the audience knows nothing about the Marvel Comics universe. They do however have to have to be a name (whatever that name may be) that carries out the actions of one of the Marvel Universes heavy hitting aliens race.

I guess I should have titled this article "What's in a Name?"

And yeah for me I'll just wait for the movie to know who the aliens are.
DDD
DDD - 2/6/2012, 4:48 PM
You're correct HAWKS@!

It doesn't really matter what the NAME is if
they're THANOS' army.

THANOS and his army does kinda make sense, though,
with all the THANOS related stuff in the solo
AVENGERS movies.

I see where you're coming from with this article.

I think the big deal is trying to convince ourselves that the "Aliens" are NOT Frost Giants, and are NOT recycled villains.
We all want to see something new, and not just the smash and blast that has since hit every Marvel movie. We've been given a taste of the villains, but that is pretty much it.

*Stane tried to have Tony assassinated in order to take over Stark Enterprises (like the comics), got into his Iron Monger suit when his plan failed, and was then beaten/killed after a basic one-on-one with Iron Man.

*Blonsky's addiction for a literal kind of power drove him to become the Abomination, and after a brief but destructive rampage he was taken down by the Hulk (but thankfully apprehended).

*Whiplash wanted to reclaim what he thought was his family's legacy and used Stark's rival to mount a short but chaotic hostile takeover before being killed in an upgraded skirmish between Iron Man and War Machine.

*Loki had the best treatment to date: having his own revelation twisting his already deceitful nature to prove that he is worthy of ruling Asgard, leading the Frost Giants in a false coup, unleashing the Destroyer to try and kill the exiled Thor, and was presumed lost to the void after failing to destroy Jotunheim with the Bifrost.

*Red Skull didn't pull any punches, establishing his own branch of the Nazis - Hydra, while planning the destruction all superpowers throughout the world with assistance from the unlimited power of the cosmic cube; his plans were foiled when Captain America shut down his operations, and the Red Skull was sucked into the Cosmic Cube.

Loki and the Red Skull were phenomenal, and while my point is that only half of the villains from Marvel's films have lived to fight another day, we are all hoping to see something fresh WITH Loki.

Frost Giants would be a disappointment.
I think everyone, regardless of what they may claim, would love the Skrulls or the Kree, although I doubt either one.
Annihilus and the Negative Zone inhabitants would be really cool and fitting. I really think it'd be great to see the dome-shaped structure that makes up the Bifrost floating in the gravity-challenged Negative Zone, after Loki somehow managed to dive down inside and transport it there.

Truthfully, I don't see Marvel spending a fortune on the effects of this movie (which in no small part make up Loki's invasion force) only to call them something like "Redacts" or an original neutral name.

I think they'll come from the different realms Loki has traversed with the Bifrost at his disposal. Whether or not the Negative Zone factors into the Yggdrasil or not has yet to be seen.

I'm still curious as to how Thor is going to get back to Midgard.

To me, it's no big deal who the army turns out to be. That trailer blew me away. And Avengers was not, until this trailer, at the top of my list for must-see-movies this Summer. That trailer alone ranked it at a very high Numero Uno! So Whedon, imo, will not let us down.
