In a recent interview with the U.K's Independent, actor Edward Norton, who was booked to reprise his Incredible Hulk role in Joss Whedon's crown jewel The Avengers, shares thoughts & feelings on the studios' decision in replacing him.

Firstly, addressing the studios' statement, which reasoned his departure being lack of someone "who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members", Norton says:
"I found it a cheap and unnecessary representation that it was about things other than money," sighs Norton. "They came to me avidly to talk about it and then at the end of the day it was just flat out a business decision."

Further labeling Marvel's ways of business "low, unprofessional and very dishonest", Norton nonetheless says:
"I would say that blew back on them much worse than it blew back on me," he avers. "I couldn't have been happier with the experience that I had making the film, but nor do I feel any kind of intensity about doing it again. A really good friend of mine's going to do it now [Mark Ruffalo] and he's awesome! Marvel's going to have to deal with their own karma – they've got bigger problems than me."
"And how could I get anxious over something like that?" he continues. "I couldn't ask for a more blessed position. The way that the work I've done has found its way into people's lives, it's everything that I got into the business to achieve so I just don't feel this relentless intensity about climbing higher anymore. I've got plenty of other things in my life to be getting on with."

I can understand being offered a salary less than what you deserve based on your achievements and resume. I don't blame him for walking, and it's too bad Marvel didn't pony up because I think that Avengers with Norton would have been epic.

Ruffalo's gonna school this pretentious douche. He takes himself way too seriously. He's a good actor and all, but he in no way defined the character of Bruce Banner. That honor, my friends, goes to the late Mr. Bill Bixby. Norton even just admitted that he just wanted more money. Fūck that guy.

25th Hour is da bomb, though.

Honestly, I like Norton a lot, and Ruffalo is ok, but why did they have to recast in the first place? Eric Bana rules.

@WadeWinstonWilson-- Very true about Bill Bixby. That man showed torment in his steps on the show. You saw sadness in his eyes. As far as Norton saying he wanted more money, there is nothing wrong with that, it is a business and his livelihood afterall

I just dont see Ruffalo as Banner. Something about him just doesnt say "Im Bruce Banner" to me.

Bill Bixby was good for the type of show that it was in the 70's.

I think Christian Bale wouldve been an excellent and better replacement Bruce Banner / Hulk.....

I love Ed Norton as an actor and to have him in a star role for Marvel was awesome, and the fact he did a good Bruce Banner was icing on the cake. They should get him back, [frick] Ruffalo.

I mean i loved Norton in the role, but its my understanding is that He was tryna run things on set, like a pre-modanna, so im not gonna look too much into this. TO be honest its his loss really. I can understand that he could want more money, but im just thinking about how would starring in a HUGE movie like the Avengers would do for ones career! i woulda stuck in just for that

I like Norton, but c'mon... He sued the producers of the Incredible Hulk before it was released, making those last few months running up to the premiere of the film a nightmare. How is he surprised that they didn't want to work with him again?

@SagMode I think Bale looks the part better than Ruffalo but ball is pretty much the face of the DC world right now. What other DC Character can compete with him at this moment in time? I think Ruffalo will do a good job, he kinda reminds me of Bixby in a weird way.

i personally liked the Incredible Hulk A LOT more than Iron Man. none of that had to do with edward norton. he's a good actor but he's not as amazing as people make him out to be IMO. IH would have been good with or without him and the hulk will be just fine without him.

JESUS [frick]ING CHRIST.

If Norton returned, that would have [frick]ed things up badly on the set of the Avengers. Seriously... the complications that would arise on set would definitely show up in the final cut of the film. Marvel made a smart move in dumping him. And I don't blame Marvel for screwing this guy. He was trying to take control of the whole film. Not to mention the Writer's Guild of America, the same union that's against studios screwing their members over, said that Norton didn't do shit to deserve his name on the writing credits. Edward Norton just has a big ego. That's why he's spurting all of this nonsense.

I think you guys are seriously over-exaggerating Norton's take on Bruce Banner. There was nothing special in his performance to warrant such nostalgia. The best part about his career as the Hulk was his name being attached to the Marvel's films. That being said, I thought Eric Bana played a better Bruce Banner. I'm looking forward to seeing what Mark Ruffalo does with the character.

Nortan is the king! the fact that people are even comparing him to Mark Ruffalo(whoever the hell that is?) its the same way with comparing Eric Bana and Edward Norton.... hes Edward Frickin' Norton, People!!! Eric Bana and Mark Ruffalo are nowhere near the caliber actor of Norton... thats the difference between an A-list actor... and ERIC BANA AND MARK RUFFALO!!! AHHAHAHAHA!!!
yea people can say that bruce banner is an easy part to play.. but the person playing it makes the difference... we wouldnt tolerate Katt Williams playing Blade or Morpheus would we? yea, Neo in the matrix could have been acted better by refridgerator magnets... but that doesnt mean that Keanu Reeves wasnt a clearly much better choice than freddie prinze jr. or michael rappaport or jamie kennedy, for gods sake....

Ryguy88 - 4/14/2011, 8:38 PM
I think Bana was the better Banner only because he was given more to do. TIH lacked a lot of character depth, but I guess Hulk lacked a lot of action. Either way, The Avengers already have enough stars, makes sense to go the cheaper route for a role that will be 50% or more CGI. A little shady the way they unveiled Norton's departure though, but hey, they're a movie studio, movie studios do shit like that.

So where were all you guys who say Norton is so great back when the movie came out? Everyone was so invested in Iron Man and RDJ that no one gave Norton and the movie credit, but now that he's been recast everyone's acting like they loved him so much and Marvel is stupid. Now this is not geared towards everyone, obviously there were plenty of people like me who actually were praising Norton's performance and the movie itself back when it came out. But to those people who didn't care for it back then but now are getting so mad and saying that Norton was perfect.....please stop. You could have done him a favor back then by supporting him.

I can close this chapter now. Ed said he didn't feel any intensity about doing the role again and gave Ruffalo a blessing of sorts. If he means he didn't have a real pressing desire to return as Banner, then he should move on. He should be passionate about it. But at the same time, he could have meant he had no hard feelings and chose the wrong choice of words. Either way, he's a gentlemen amongst douchebags and a class act.

Kevin Fiege should take Norton notes on professionalism and grace.
