Joe Quesada Discusses Agent Coulson's Return In MARVEL'S S.H.I.E.L.D. And More

In a chat with at this weekend's New York Comic Con, Marvel's Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada has shared a few more details about the highly anticipated debut of Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. We don't know a lot of details at this point about the direction that the series will take, but the fact that Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) will return after seemingly being killed off in Marvel's The Avengers, has led to an awful lot of theories! Be sure to click on the link below to read some more highlights from the interview, including Quesada's thoughts on Marvel's success across all media and his recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

"He plays Agent Coulson. I really can't tell too much more than that because I'd be revealing too much of the show's structure, but we're thrilled to build the show around him. First of all, aside from being an amazing actor, Clark is one of the sweetest guys you'd ever encounter. We cast him as Agent Coulson in the 'Ultimate Spider-Man' cartoon and we got his permission to do his likeness and of course, he voices the character. You've just never seen anybody who's so happy to have this character that's built around him and he' part of this mythology. My best moment is when I said to him, 'Hey Clark, you're going to be in the comics, too. Coulson is going to be in the Marvel Universe.' And he literally melted, it was like fanboy glee."

"We have incredibly high hopes for the TV show. I think Clark is obviously going to be a huge breakout star. Again, I read, I know what the show's about and I think Marvel fans are going to be absolutely over the moon with it and those people who watched "The Avengers" movie -- not many people who didn't -- are going to be incredibly happy with it and satisfied with it. Those who don't know anything about "The Avengers" or the Marvel Universe are going to love it as well because it's a very unique show that we're creating."

the only thing i don't like about them bringing him back on TV is i think it might take away from the moments in the movies. you can't count on the chance that everyone who watched Avengers will watch the show. (even tho it may be true) if Coulson has his big return on TV and then in Avengers 2 we treat it as if he never died that would be weird.

otherwise BRING BACK COULSON!

My big question is will it take place before or after the Avengers? My guess is after.

Really hoping its just him narrating, or in retrospective video training form or something to that effect. If they literally bring him back from the dead, it'll do a major disservice to the Avengers

if this is a prequel that will suck..

we were promised it would run along side. plus why do i care about a prequel? we already know what happens. why isn't anyone talking about Colbie Smulders?

I'm glad Clark Gregg is coming back to reprise his role as Agent Coulson. As far as the storyline, it could be a prequel. Have adventures for Agent Coulson & the S.H.I.E.L.D agents before The Avengers batteled Loki. It could take place at the begining of Phase 1.

I don't think this will be a prequel. If it was, they'd be limiting themselves in terms of storytelling.

Besides Iron Man and the Hulk, it doesn't seem like the public was too aware of superhumans, so if this is set before those films you really can't have any stories that show superhuman crimes being an every day occurrence.

You can't use or elude to any people that debuted in a Marvel film or reference any events that occurred in them because they haven't happened yet.

You can't have any major events in that universe because you can't do anything that would contradict what we've seen in the previous films.

Obviously, this can't be about the beginning of SHIELD because we know that happened decades ago when Howard Stark was still alive. If Clark Gregg is in it, it has to place in the present or very recently.

He is useless unneeded humor, why can't they just let him be dead and gone. I was happy when they killed him off in the avengers it was the best part of the movie!

In the course of a 14 minute interview he couldn't have at least broached the subject of Marvel getting the rights to Daredevil back?

He's dead. They're probably using him to kick-off the plots. Like "Coulson was investigating a hero for hire in NY... **flashbaaaack*** ...And here's his report."

its ironic how even the word 'literal' is losing its literal meaning...

i don't think its gonna be a flashback. i think the show's gonna be set before the avengers. but thats just my guess...

Am I the only one who never bought into Coulson's death watching The Avengers? I never once thought he actually died. Especially based on some of Fury's comments after that scene.

^i dunno man. coulson was a major reason behind the avengers coming together. retconning his death would take a lot of the punch out of the teamup moment, particularly for tony stark...
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 10/15/2012, 10:55 AM
jingorot@ It served its purpose and Fury used that moment to do so. Some may not like it, but that is how Fury operates, which makes it more authentic and true to the character and bringing the team together. Fury would do so at all costs to save the world. I don't think it takes any punch out of anything. It actually makes the dynamic all the more interesting. Different strokes.

@Ranger14

his death served a very important purpose. if he's alive, the emotional resonance between the character which motivated them to work together, and even for the audience who now rooted harder than ever for an epic team-up, will all total to naught.

yeah, it might make the team dynamic more interesting. but you can't deny that it does significantly reduce the emotional 'punch' of the entire third act. as for fury operating with deception, i think that was already expressed just fine with how he lied about the card. i don't think it would be wise to ruin the third act like that just to emphasize it after the fact.

that's what my thinking is. but whatever if you're satisfied with that, there really is no reason for me to go on and on in an attempt to make you dissatisfied with it.

like you said 'different strokes'
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 10/15/2012, 11:25 AM
I guess we will agree to disagree. Like I said, I never bought into him actually dying and I don't think it was all for naught, so it didn't ruin the following acts at all for me. The team pulled together. Regardless of the motivation, if the team looks back on it, they will realize they had to in order to to defeat the threat that was presented. They may be pissed and upset that they were misled, but it does not take away from the fact that they needed to be brought together somehow and Fury did that by any means necessary. Like I said, it actually creates more emotional punch for me. To each their own. :-)

@ranger the only thing I don't like about coulsons death being fury's plan is that fury wouldn't know if Loki would kill him. Loki could have just used his mind control on him.

Anyways, I like the idea of this show taking place before avengers and during the rest of the phase 1 movies. It would greatly expand the world of the first few films. It would also be difficult to have it run in line with the current films, in that the details of the plots are not set in stone. All it takes is one little change to a film and continuity between the show and the films would be crap. The phase one movies are already done, so they have a skeletal timeline to plan the show around.

darkmetal@ For me it was when Hawkeye died and everyone immediately started talking about his return and when it would inevitably happen (which, of course it did). That was the last straw for me and Marvel, in terms of death. It was kind of like these days and all the Batman reboot talk, before Dark Knight Rises was even released into theatres. That's when you know things are getting silly.
Maximus101@ You are literally evil, duder.

I know how they'll bring him back. Disney will change reality by erasing the sceptre from his death scene. Ergo, no death.
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 10/15/2012, 11:39 AM
To avoid misunderstandings...I don't think the attack on Coulson was Fury's plan or some type of premonition or foresight. I think he used the situation to his advantage after the fact to help pull the team together. I never would suggest Fury planned the whole thing. He reacted to the situation in the way that Fury would. Use it to manipulate the individual members to bring them together after it happened. A reactive measure to the attack on Coulson as opposed to proactive.

Jeez, people chill out... Coulson can be on life support, unknown to anyone outside of some super secret sector of SHIELD, and used for a few episodes in training videos, etc. Then he can be brought back, on purpose or accidentally, and used however Whedon wants to use him (hopefully not to just run him through again... Whedon likes to kill people in old fashioned ways, don't he?) Hey, what if Thor brought him back, with the power of the cube, before taking it back to Aasgard? Or maybe he made Loki do it? Leave it to Whedon to tell you how it's done.

Coulson didn't die on screen; no matter how bad an injury it was, and Fury had been revealed to be lying about other things.

Doesn't seem to be a big revelation to me.

Coulson is a fairly popular character. Plus by having Coulson in the show 'Officially' connects the show to the film franchises. Win/Win situation.

It could be that Coulson on the Shield tv show will be a LMD, if they want to keep in continuity with the Avengers movie. Should be great show.

DuneJedi1@ Frank Castle should be an agent of SHIELD. That would totally work. Happily married and everything. Pre-Punisher. It makes sense, as his character has been going through a steady evolution in that direction, anyway. From soldier to cop to FBI agent to SHIELD agent. That way they could get him in the show and still do an origin film, later on.

DeeAyeRon - 10/15/2012, 12:37 PM
During the movie, when Hill confronted Fury on the fact that the bloody cards were in Coulson' locker, I thought that symbolozied Fury's manipulation for the greater good. With that, the fact that the med team got to Coulson quick, and Fury never actually saying Coulson was dead (he used the word "down"), I believed they were all hints that Coulson was still alive. Maybe I'm in denial.

I don't think Coulso being alive would take away from the Avengers assembling. They learned to work together, and I don't know why that would go away if he was alive.
