Kevin Feige Assures Subtitle For THE AVENGERS 2 & Character Interactions That Top First Movie

Ensuring that Joss Whedon already has character interactions a “notch or two above” the first movie, Kevin Feige explains how Iron Man 3 paves the way for the 2015 superhero reassembly. Read on…

Amid all of the Iron Man 3 hype, Collider spoke with Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige about the Shane Black-directed movie and how it's paving the way for the hotly-anticipated 2015 follow-up to The Avengers. Praising writer-director Joss Whedon's (unfinished) script and its promising character interactions, Feige also implies that The Avengers 2 is just a tentative title for the sequel.

“Well Joss has said it on the record in the past, it’s not about going bigger,” Feige says. “It’s not about, ‘And this time there will be five more explosions in this section!’ I mean certainly you want to up the ante, you want to exceed people’s expectations, but I think there are various ways of doing that and Iron Man 3 is a very, very good test for us of doing exactly that. The first movie we make after The Avengers has our hero spending more time out of the suit than any of the other movies; that seems potentially counterintuitive to some people, but that was exactly why we did it. We didn’t want to say, ‘Oh now it has to be bigger and he fights 100 people in armored suits.’ Yeah the action sequences are big, there’s more action in Iron Man 3 than in the other two movies, but at the same time it’s a much deeper and a more exploratory character journey on the heels of our biggest spectacle with The Avengers.”

“We’ve been consistent in talking about this leading up to The Avengers: what is most interesting to us and why we hired Joss Whedon in the first place is the interaction between the characters. That’s more fun to us than the massive action scenes that are gonna have to come with it that we’re gonna have to figure out, and we’re gonna have to be clever and raise the bar, but already the scenes that Joss has of just the characters sitting around and interacting are hilarious and are awesome and are moving and a notch or two above the first movie, and to me that’s where you wanna top yourself.”

When Collider asked if The Avengers 2 will have a subtitle, Feige teased, “I would say that if you look at the trend of our upcoming movies, Iron Man 3 is the only one that has a number. I like Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi instead of Star Wars 2, Star Wars 3.”

Marvel Studios already describes their highly-anticipated sequel to the No. 3 highest grossing film of all time, “Marvel's The Avengers,” as another “big cinematic event.” And expected to feature the reassembly of iconic Marvel super heroes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow & Nick Fury taking on a new unexpected enemy, new additions to the superhero team up of a lifetime are possible.

Expecting reprisals from Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Joss Whedon from a screenplay by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” sequel is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. And set for release May 1, 2015, the film is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. In addition to the sequel, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; and “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014.

They really have the right idea regarding how to approach it, IMO. Deeper, not bigger. Hopefully it's executed properly, but A2 has potential to be even better than the first.

Unexpected. I thought it was just going to be The Avengers 2. It will be better with a subtitle though. Can't wait!

[frick] YOU, FEIGE! Saying "characters" instead of who's actually in the scene? Who is all in Avengers 2? Hmmm??? Who watches the Watchmen? Who has got milk? Is Black Panther in there? Hmmm????

As Clark Kent says in Man of Steel, "I have so many questions..." AAAAHHHHHHHH!

Iron Man 3 was a letdown. Hopefully Avengers 2 or whatever it'll be called will live up to its predecessor.

The Avengers 2 having a subtitle? I can dig it. Seeing Iron Man 3 next weekend with dad, definitely can't wait. Yes, I know everything that happens in the movie and I'm still super excited for it. Iron Man 3 is going to be amazing and I can't wait for the rest of Phase Two. People complaining about Marvel being style over substance can finally shut up, although I personally thought Phase One was substance over style. Avengers just has the best of both. Definitely can't wait for, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Most anticipated, right behind Avengers 2.

Good. The moments when they all bickered were the best. I'm still skeptical about this Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver thing though.

I thought Tony spent a good enough time in the suit, I could have went with some more heroic moments like that airplane scene.

I always prefer subtitle over number, I hope the next Spiderman-movie will also have subtitle instead of a number.

Exactly why I trust this man: He knows there are only 3 Star Wars movies.

Using Ironman3 as an example of what to expect from Avengers 2 is not a good angle as many people I talk to personally say Ironman3 was so-so, as a lot of people on the Internet feel as well.

They are going in the wrong way with Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver. People can't help getting distracted from the incest thing lol. And no, Feige. Iron Man 3 sucked ass, so that is not the best direction you could've taken.

Avengers 2: Seriously DC, you should get round to making that Justice League movie, these ensemble superhero movies are so good for business.

I'm a HUGE Marvel guy for their movies and I hate, absolutely HATE, IM3.

It's like they wanted to Disneyfy it by have having more things to sell and a little kid.

Awful, awful, awful.

I'm now very worried about Thor, Captain America and GOTG.

I see a disaster unfolding.

I'll bet anything that the subtitle will be a hint at what to expect in the film. Maybe having the villain's name or the MacGuffin of the film be the subtitle? Who knows what they'll do with this.

The incest thing happened only in the ultimate universe. in the 616 she loved wonder man, vision, captain america, angel and wolverine. She has the choice.

I was really disappointed about Iron Man 3. Still I'm excited to see all Phase 2 films. My most anticipated film of Phase 2 is Guardians of the Galaxy. Cant [frick]ing wait for that shit.

Oh and shawarma tastes so good.

@GUNSMITH. First of all, Spidey is not a mutant. Second of all, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are old school avengers. They aren't there simply because they are mutants. This is the order in which the characters appeared.

Founding members: The Hulk, Ironman, Antman, The Wasp, Thor

1st Recruit: Captain America

2nd, 3rd and 4th Recruits: Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and Hawkeye

Third of all, Marvel studios doesn't have the rights to Spidey and Wolverine.

IM3 Was fun. I didnt mind the twist.(btw if you get sad about reading spoilers why are you even on a site like this? Stay away until you watch the movie dum dum)That being said,I think it is a nice film to establish phase two. But the after credit scene is bullshit. The thing about these stand alone films is I would think at least a little shield help would be apropriat. Not all the avengers need to be in the film but a cameo or two cant hurt.

I LOVED IM3, even the Mandarin spin was well done. And I say this as a long time comic book reader

Of course having the power rings would've been cooler if Killian had them

I dug all the character attention payed to Tony and wouldn't mind that in the Avengers sequel as long as the action is there too

Brilliant movie. I love the fact that most of the action forced him to improvise rather than rely exclusively on the suit.

I hope they don't spend an entire hour of the film setting everything up. That really took Avengers down for me especially since we already had 5 films that served as setup for Avengers before hand.

I also want them to make the plot a little less generic, Avengers plot was good but it way to familiar for me and 2 should try to do something a different.

With the way it sounds, I'm guessing the second one is more of a thriller, possibly bringing in the shape shifting Skrulls.
