THE AVENGERS Concept Art Reveals Ryan Meinerding's Earliest ULTIMATES-Inspired Designs For Hawkeye

Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding has revealed his earliest designs for Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye in The Avengers, and you can definitely see how The Ultimates inspired his work...

Hawkeye is currently streaming on Disney+, and the spotlight is finally being put on Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton. While it's looking like the hero's mantle will ultimately be passed to Kate Bishop, the series has definitely done this original member of Earth's Mightiest Heroes justice thus far.

While Hawkeye debuted in 2011's Thor, it wasn't until The Avengers the following year that he was really given the chance to show what he could do. While Clint is now wearing a purple costume inspired by Matt Fraction and David Aja's comic book run featuring the archer, he started off in an outfit influenced by Bryan Hitch's work in The Ultimates (a take on the Avengers based on a world very similar to our own).

Now, Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding has taken to Instagram to share "the earliest image I painted of [Hawkeye] from Avengers."

It's fascinating to see how much this character has changed over the past decade, as Marvel Studios has been able to embrace comic accurate costumes in a way they perhaps couldn't in the MCU's early days. Of course, what ended up on screen was a little different to what we see here, but you can see how Meinerding's early work ultimately played into the character's final appearance.

I didn't mind the military-style looks for Hawkeye and BW given their allegiance to SHIELD. Would make sense to have them start out with such costumes and then moving on to more comic accurate fare in future installments (which they did)

All of these kinds of black costumes are just incredibly generic to me.

A good superhero look needs at least one iconic element… MCU Hawkeye has never had one.

@Chewtoy - glad the show is finally giving him the purple chest arrow. That’s the one defining thing he should have.

Too many zippers and not enough purple

The trick arrows are the best part of the character. Glad they introduced so many this last episode

Honestly, most Ultimate designs were terrible. The MCU appearances should have been based more on the mainstream comics.

The look he had in Marvel vs Capcom 3 was pretty dope maybe that could've worked.

Or maybe something more Ultimate inspired like this:

This show has to have him wear the classic costume at some point.

@KWilly - I agree that this would be cool, but also can't help but point out the humor in the fact that I'm pretty sure the picture you posted is actually of Bullseye when he was a member of the Dark Avengers, pretending to he Hawkeye

@KWilly - They definitely missed that opportunity in the LARP episode. He should have found a bunch of random costume pieces and put something together to hide his identity and that OG costume was all he could come up with.

A whole purple and blue costume can work it only needs to be in the right proportions.

This is nothing new. 10 years ago Renner and half the Internet thought could never have a costume accurate Hawkeye because it was too ridiculous. The same people said Galacticus had to be a cloud because no one would take a giant seriously, and finally everyone was so sure that Antman could never be successful… I plead my case! To me if it was good enough to be in the comics that's how it should be in the movies.

@SpideyQuad - to be fair Galactus is an Alien and Ant-Man's costume is a containtment suit, while Hawkeye is just a guy with an mostly impractical gimmick.

@SpideyQuad - I don't think anyone defended Galactus being a giant fart cloud apart from the executives at Fox back in 2007.

@AC1 - @AC1 - No, it was most of this community that was making that argument. Better than 75% I would say, because this subject was so frustrating to me. Personally I held Byan Singer responsible because of his stance on the first two X-Men movies.

I like Jeremy Renner and I enjoyed his Hawkeye a lot, but he was the worst malcontent of the group always complaining about something early on. He seems much better now, but I can't help but think he's a bit of a d!ck

@GirshwinDavies - Yeah these concepts show a mega buff Hawkeye. Renner did not reach this level but I think he did well for himself.
