THOR: THE DARK WORLD Mid-Credits Scene, The Tesseract, and Future Marvel Films

MAJOR SPOILERS to be had here, so if you do not want to be spoiled, then please, don't click the link. In the following post, I'll be clarifying a few things about the MCU, and Thor: The Dark World's post-credits scene.

Over at Screenrant, Kofi Outlaw had the chance to sit down one-on-one with President of Production Kevin Fiege during the press junket for Thor: The Dark World. He had the chance to ask Kevin Fiege exactly what was going on with the Marvel Cinematic Universes Phases overall, and what they had planned for the Infinity Gauntlet, and Thanos. Kofi had revealed some of this information already, but more importantly did not reveal what is about to be shown below, due in part to Thor: The Dark World not being released over-seas (at the time), but now that it has been released, the cat is being let out of the bag.

It has been speculated that Thanos will play a major role in The Avengers 3, and that his overall goal was to use the power of the Infinity Gauntlet to rule the Universe.

MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW, SO IF YOU DON'T WANT TO RUIN THE MID-CREDITS SCENE FOR YOURSELF, LOOK AWAY NOW.

Before I get to that, I wanted to note what exactly happened in Thor: The Dark World's mid-credits scene.

In the mid-credits scene of Thor: The Dark World, Sif and Volstagg bring the "Aether" to the intergalactic museum of The Collector. He utters the phrase "One down, five to go", speaking of the Infinity Stones, and that the Tersseract was kept on Asgard for a reason.

In the following statement by Kevin Fiege, not only does he (kind of) confirm that, but, also reveals something very, very interesting..

Kevin Feige: I don’t know that I would spell it out that clearly, necessarily, but certainly fans of the comics could surmise that all of this is leading somewhere. That Joss’ decision to have Thanos turn around and smile to the audience at the end of ‘Avengers’ – it was always the plan to show that the tesseract was indeed an infinity stone, as was the Aether. A lot of that will tie first into ‘Guardians of The Galaxy’ which comes out next year and then where it goes from there we’ll see… I would not necessarily attribute them based on colors, because you’re close but you’re not 100% right on what each one is. …[but] yes, the MacGuffin of ‘Guardians’ certainly plays into MacGuffins from the past.

He also notes that we won't see the ramifications of the reveal of the stones until further down the pipeline in the MCU (presumably Phase III) with films like Doctor Strange and The Inhumans justifying their "mystical" powers, in statement saying:

Kevin Feige: Well, we’ll see it won’t be until probably sometime next year before we announce the 2016 movies and the 2017 movies and a lot of that will depend on the reception to the next batch of movies. What we’re actively working on is Thor’s next appearance in ‘Age of Ultron’ – where he goes beyond that we have a lot of ideas. You’re right that where we leave the characters in this movie sort of hints what could happen in the future but we’ll see where that goes after ‘Avengers 2.’

There you have it, folks. It seems as though, the Tesseract is one of the six Infinity STONES (as opposed to being Infinity GEMS in the comics).

Well...DUH. After Avengers became a hit the next logical step is to make a movie with the Avengers...and OTHER Marvel movie characters...it's just common sense that they are going to build to some sort of MEGA CROSSOVER in the movies the same way they did in the comics. Let's not forget that "Secret Wars" was one of the very first comic mini-series that brought all of the publishers characters together in one big epic story. They had all of this planned from the start, they just wanted to see if it was going to make money or not. So now it's made money and they are going to start dropping hints. Secret Wars or Infinty Gauntlent is a no brainer. Like I said, DUH.

Tesseract is the space gem.
Loki had the mind gem
Malekith had the power gem

Also confirms that loki's sceptre is still on earth.

I'm not seeing any reference to the Inhumans or Strange in his statement? Where exactly does he say Inhumans and Doctor Strange are connected to the Infinity Stones?

I had always assumed that the Tesseract was an Infinity Stone. Especially after Thanos was in the after credit scene. I didn't know that was a secret.

Inhumans and Dr. Strange are the most logical ways to introduce Infinity Stones. Also, gems are stones, so you're statement on them being stones rather than gems doesn't make sense.

The Collector was awesome in the mid-credit, and there's now way Ophelia Lovibond's character will have a significant role after seeing that mid-credit stinger.

Gonna fit in the gauntlet in Odins

I don't have a problem NPa, I'm just saying gems and stones are essentially the same thing. Diamonds are stones, yet would you refer to them as gems? Ruby, Topaz, Sapphire, all stones, but most would say gems, yes?

Uh, but wasn't the Infinity Gauntlet already in the first Thor?

I'm guessing the gauntlet was just an easter egg, Thanos may have used it in the past and Odin stopped him.

I like your theory, NPa. Sounds entirely plausible. The Tesseract clearly powered the Mind Stone and the Aether must power the Power Stone. Wonder what could power the others?

I like your thinking but I wouldn't be so sure. Think about how the tesseract had been used since it's intro. It had been used as a power source, for weapons and portals. The power gem has always been the backbone of the gauntlet. It's what boost the other gems to God making status. I think that one could go either way. It could be the space gem but I'm not so sure. Hopefully seeing Thor will clear it up a bit more.

Haven't seen Thor yet so I won't comment on the aether.

The comment about lokis gem being powered by the tesseract also throws me for a loop. It could mean that it is not an infinity gem and just some different tech using the cube as a power source. Or it could be the mind gem using the cube as a power source. I don't think it's as cut and dry as we think.
