Warner Bros.' long-gestating Batgirl movie is finally gaining some momentum, with Bad Boys For Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah set to helm the DC Comics adaptation.
According to THR, the duo have closed their deal to direct the project, which is reportedly being developed as a HBO Max movie. There's no word on whether a theatrical release is also planned.
Christina Hodson, who wrote Bumblebee and also worked on Birds of Prey and The Flash, penned the most recent draft of the script.
"With Batgirl, we hope to take the audience on a fun ride and see a different side of Gotham,” said producer Kristin Burr. “Christina’s script is crackling with spirit. Adil and Bilall have an excited and joyous energy which is infectious, making them the perfect filmmakers for this Batproject. And I’m just psyched I get to be part of the DC universe, which is super cool.”
Avengers director Joss Whedon was originally attached to Batgirl, but parted ways with the project back in 2018 after claiming that he failed to "crack the story." Adil and Bilall successfully revitalized the Bad Boys franchise with the highly profitable third installment, and also helmed episodes of the upcoming Disney+ Ms. Marvel series.
