BLUE BEETLE Director Angel Manuel Soto Was Fixated On This BATMAN Villain Before WB Sold Him On Jaime Reyes

When director Angel Manuel got the call from Warner Bros. to come in and make a pitch, he hoped his dreams of telling a Bane origin story were about to come true.

We're just a few weeks out from the release of Blue Beetle in theaters and Den of Geek has spoken to director Angel Manuel for its latest magazine issue.

It seems that when Warner Bros. called in Manuel to make a pitch, he had no idea it would be for making a film about Jaime Reyes assuming the Blue Beetle torch from Ted Kord.

Instead, Manuel thought he was getting the chance to pitch a film of his choice and he went into the meeting prepared to sell the studio on a Bane origin film.

"I wanted to pitch ideas, and one of them was the Bane origin story,” Soto told Den of Geek about getting called by Warner Bros to pitch a DC film. “I always thought that there was something interesting in exploring his reality and how a character like that comes to be.

However, Manuel found out that it wasn't a meeting where he would get to convince studio executives about a character of his choice.  "The conversation was not about that,” Soto recalled.  Instead, the studio told him, “There’s this character that we’ve been developing for a couple of years. The Blue Beetle, a Latino superhero.

Given Blue Beetle's current box office tracking, do you think Warner Bros. should have listened to Manuel's initial pitch for a Bane origin film?

Hopefully the box office early predictions begin to tick upwards thanks to positive word of mouth from early screenings and favorable film reviews.

There's also the chance that Bane might factor into James Gunn's current plans for the new DC Studios cinematic universe and Manuel has his wish fulfilled one day.

Blue Beetle is currently slated to hit U.S. theaters on August 18.

Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE.

Starring alongside Maridueña (“Cobra Kai”) are Adriana Barraza (“Rambo: Last Blood,” “Thor”), Damían Alcázar (“Narcos,” “Narcos: Mexico”), Elpidia Carrillo (“Mayans M.C.,” the “Predator” films), Bruna Marquezine (“Maldivas,” “God Save the King”), Raoul Max Trujillo (the “Sicario” films, “Mayans M.C.”), with Oscar winner Susan Sarandon (“Monarch,” “Dead Man Walking”), and George Lopez (the “Rio and “Smurf” franchises). The film also stars Belissa Escobedo (“American Horror Stories,” “Hocus Pocus 2”) and Harvey Guillén (“What We Do in the Shadows”). Soto (“Charm City Kings,” “The Farm”) directs from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (“Miss Bala”), based on characters from DC. John Rickard and Zev Foreman are producing, with Walter Hamada, Galen Vaisman and Garrett Grant serving as executive producers.

I don't wanna tell WB how do to they business...but uh...I don't know, I think they should probably try doing some marketing for the film. But what do I know? I only have two subscribers on my OnlyFans. 🤷‍♂️

@GhostDog -

With all the recent flops I think the time for unexplored characters is over for a bit. It's time to focus on the big guns. Establish the core first.

Wasn't Bane's origin covered in The Dark Knight Rises? THIS.....is the problem with Warner Brothers and DC in a nutshell. Rather than build on the things that worked (The Dark Knight Trilogy and Man of Steel) they keep rebooting and retreading things that are already in the aether, thus making it impossible for you to build out a cohesive world. That is why you see them constantly putting out multiple Batmen...NOW IN ONE MOVIE...or they feel the need to reboot the most profitable and popular Superman for no apparent reason. There is nothing wrong with the IP...there is everything wrong with the people in charge of that IP.

@Forthas - Um, DC/Warner was not looking to do a Bane movie. It was the director’s idea and Bane is not happening, but you go on complaining about something that is not real if it makes you feel good.

@Forthas - you can’t built on TDK Trilogy when it was meant to be finite. You continually say this, and it’s dumb. It wasn’t going to happen. They should’ve however focused on a solo Superman franchise continuing forward with MoS as originally planned.

@TheVengeance - I have had this SAME discussion with you about this absurd idea that you can't build on a franchise that was meant to be finite and every time I point out the Alien franchise continues when it was supposed to be one movie....the Star Wars franchise continues when it was supposed to end after the first Trilogy...and even Warner Brother's own Joker movie where both the director and lead actor famously said it was a one and done...are guess what making a sequel.

Yes! They should have made Man of Steel 2 and slowly added more to the universe but weaker minds prevailed.

@RolandD - That is not the point that the studio wasn't looking to make a Bane movie at that time. The point is that the studio entertains pitches from directors for characters that should be already established. It would be as if Marvel entertained a Thanos film that had nothing to do with the MCU. Any person with two working braincells could guess that is not going to happen anytime soon. Yet at Warner Brothers that very well could happen as they had two versions of the Joker. So they entertain ideas for films that undermine the very shared universe they claim they want to build.

RolandD - 7/27/2023, 8:21 AM
@Forthas - of course it is the point. Your post acted like DCF was looking to do this and it is clear that they were not. They already have their movie in mind and was not inviting Soto to pitch whatever he wanted. The quote from him even says as much. Soto was assuming but could admit he was wrong. You are making assumptions and won’t admit it.
Forthas
Forthas - 7/27/2023, 8:40 AM
@RolandD - How are you going to tell me the point I am making? A movie that features a Batman villain that is disconnected from the DC universe IS possible and we know this because Warner Brothers has already done it and it was successful. Bane may not be a priority for them now but the very same leadership that greenlit Joker was the one he wanted to pitch Bane to. CLEARLY the reason he thought he could is because it was successfully done for Joker therefore my complaint that the studio invites this diluting of its own brand. I hope MY POINT is a little clearer for you.
RolandD
RolandD - 7/27/2023, 8:28 PM
@Forthas - If you say so.

A Bane standalone film akin to Joker could be interesting imo (and I say that as someone who didn’t care much for that movie).

Anyway , sucks that it seems like Blue Beetle won’t do well since it looks like it could be fun (if derivative).

@incredibleTalk - ...you need a movie telling girls that men are preventing them from getting anywhere in life, and that it's fine to treat them worse than what's claimed is the other way around?

I would see a prison show with Edward James Olmos playing a Narco who has been locked up for years. He is to Bane similar to Abate Faria to Edmund Dantes. Bane is educated with books like Sun Tzu's The Art of War.

Also, Bane is the hit man for James Olmos' character and we see how Bane plans and executes. He becomes a brutal tactician.

Still have yet to see him done justice. He was a glorified henchman in TDKR. One of the few villain origin movies I'd be down to see.

Yeah, don't do a Sony and make a villain film.
Explore his origins in a Batman film. That's the point.

Wouldn’t be surprised if they studio told him to make pain a tragic anti hero instead of villain, if a Bane movie ever got the green light
