DC Studios Co-Chair James Gunn Weighs In On The Joker's Definitive Origin Story

Over the years, the Joker has received several origin stories but the current Joker: Year One arc in Chip Zdarsky and Andrea Sorrentino Batman run even has James Gunn commenting.

While many comics, movies, TV shows and films have covered Batman's origin story, not many projects have tried to explain the circumstances that birthed the Joker.

Of course, Todd Phillips' Oscar-nominated 2019 film Joker made the attempt, and many years before that The Batman: The Animated Series movie Batman: Mask of the Phantasm took a stab at it as well.

However, for most comic book readers, The Killing Joke graphic novel by  Alan Moore and illustrator Brian Bolland is considered the definitive origin story for Gotham's Clown Prince of Crime.

Recently, there's been a new wrinkle in the Joker's origin, thanks to  Geoff Johns' Batman: Three Jokers miniseries, which proposed that there wasn't one Joker running around Gotham but three.

That 2020 miniseries concluded with a ton of questions left unanswered but Chip Zdarsky is attempting to tie up loose ends in his current Batman run.  The current arc is proposing that the 3 Jokers are simply distinct personalities- the Clown, the Demon and the Killer.

Furthermore, the story proposes that the Joker crafted these personalities with the help of Batman's mentor, Daniel Captio, the man who taught Bruce how to create alternate personas like the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh.

Recently, DC Studios co-chair James Gunn was asked to weigh in on what he considers to be the definitive origin story of the Joker. [via Threads]

He stated, "I consider whatever I’m reading “true” in the moment I’m reading it! As for canon, I’m not in charge of mainstream DC Comics continuity - just that of the DCU (which will intersect & sway away & intersect again etc with DC Comics). These characters are all myths & I really enjoy the variations on them - especially when the artists understand the core of what I believe makes a character great & understands their history while offering a new spin."

In a follow-up response to another fan who stated that fans focus too much on what's canon, James stated [also via Threads], "So true. At least half of the top ten greatest DC stories aren’t canon."

Aside from Todd Phillips' Joker: Folie à Deux, which  will hit theaters on October 4, 2024, there's no word on where or when the Joker will turn up next. Matt Reeves cast Barry Keoghan as Batman's #1 archrival in The Batman and it's thought that he'll play an expanded role in the sequel, which is slated for release on October 3, 2025.

With Damian Wayne set to take center stage in The Brave and the Bold, it's heavily speculated (but unconfirmed) that his grandfather Ra's al Ghul, mother Talia and the League of Assassins will serve as the DCU Batman's first/primary antagonist.

Joker is best with no origin.

Mistake so often made in storytelling is to explain the unknown, when it is the unknown that makes it scary

@ossie85 - agreed. The same used to be true with Wolverine

Certainly my preferred take on the character.

@ossie85 - Red Hood falling into a vat of chemicals IS his definitive origin. Finger, Moore, and Snyder have all done variations on it, but Batfans have considered it canon since the ‘50s, anything before that is up to the writers’/readers’ imagination though.

@ossie85 - nah. He's best when his origin is multiple choice.

@ossie85 - 100%. That's why Nolan's JOKER (well, Heath was given free rein to do whatever during filming) was so cool because of all the conflicting back stories he told people about himself.
But, I also enjoyed the different background take of JOKER too.

I honestly like seeing different takes on characters & such regardless of whether i ultimately like them or not because I find it refreshing & fun to see how characters I have been familiar with (for the most part) are interpreted by different creatives..

If I want the versions I grew up with , I would read the comics and even then those are filled with retcons & even different characterizations to an extent.

Gunn making DC movies great again

@vectorsigma - Stop jumping the gun on Gunn, dude.

Let's wait and see how "Superman: Legacy" does first.

@TheLight - he hasnt done a bad movie. He knows his comics and understands characterization.

All we hear from critics are shouts of nepotism and jokes every scene.

He will do great on Superman Legacy.

@lazlodaytona - I don't think the poster has a prob with hopeful, they have a problem with stating he's already "making them great" when he hasn't even made one. If he said "I'm hopeful and excited Gunn is going to make them great again" that wouldn't have elicited that response.

@TheLight - think we're not really jumping the gun, considering he already made 5 comic book movies a 1 show that all have been doing pretty well
TheLight
TheLight - 2/22/2024, 8:14 PM
@lazlodaytona - Usually those come with high expectations and ridiculous wishes that at times fall short and flat, especially with today's style and aesthetics. I'm not putting my faith on blind hope. Action speaks louder than words, a saying that to this day means more than ever. This movie needs to deliver. You and others have trust in Gunn, that's fine, but I'm waiting to see how the final product look to make my own assessments.
TheLight
TheLight - 2/22/2024, 8:22 PM
@vectorsigma - The only movies I enjoyed from his filmography was The Belko Experiment (which he only wrote) and Super. His rise came from the GOTG films and I barely got through the first movie and never watched the sequels or Peacekeeper.

This is SUPERMAN we're talking about. He's in a completely different league. I don't trust the guy with handling Superman given his track record of nearly all of his movies being character team-ups, never having a strong solo lead.

I'm holding out on the verdict of "He will do great on Superman Legacy" until it arrives in a year.

I'm hoping to be proven wrong.
TheLight
TheLight - 2/22/2024, 8:25 PM
@ridah - Thank you for that👍. Superman's been my favorite superhero since I was a kid, so I'm very protective of him. I just want him to be treated right.

@bkmeijer1 - good heavens, someone getting it
TheLight
TheLight - 2/22/2024, 8:28 PM
@bkmeijer1 - This is Superman we're talking about. SUPERMAN. All of those other superhero projects he worked on were on some lesser known characters that would make no nevermind if they succeeded or failed. With Superman, one of the most recognizable fictional characters in the world, the stakes are higher.
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 2/22/2024, 8:33 PM
@TheLight - to each his own i guess. The gotg trilogy are great.

If anything. Doing ensembles and still focusing on a "lead" is harder which, Gunn is great with. With the hero of all heroes, it will be easy for him.

I guess your rebuttal will have a better point if you have watched all of his cbms first.
TheLight
TheLight - 2/22/2024, 8:46 PM
@vectorsigma - Dude I don't need to watch all of his film to see his repetition of copy and paste with his team-ups in nearly all of them. Superman is usually in a league of his own and I have yet to see a film he's done where the primary main has been the sole main. But like you said, to each his own. I'll wait to see how Superman : Legacy does in a year.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/23/2024, 2:03 AM
@TheLight - that's true. I do think Gunn can handle it. He knows how to write character, and that's one of the most important things about Superman imo

@Nolanite -

Why?

His best film (by far) was the first "Guardians of the Galaxy" film and that was co-written and developed by Nicole Perlman.

In fact, I don't see much of a "heart" in his films - just a manufactured formula.

An eccentric group of outsiders that learn to become a family. Rinse, repeat.

He's even trying to fit "Superman" into that formula.

He's just lucky he has the Comic Book genre to hitch his off-kilter and sometimes pervy sensibilities onto.
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 2/18/2024, 8:53 PM
@Ginley - dont see heart?

You need to rewatch stuff dude. No other film in the mcu can show heart as much as the gotg trilogy. Even the xmas special has it.
lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 2/18/2024, 9:05 PM
@Ginley - Then, apparently, you never saw Gunn's film SUPER. Lots of violence, comedy, and much heart ... or, maybe I should say broken-heart.
