JOKER Director Todd Phillips Is Said To Be Getting "Pretty Close" On Planned Sequel

Warner Bros. still haven't officially announced that a sequel to 2019's Joker is even in development, but a new report claims that director Todd Phillips is has been working hard on the project...

Despite persistent rumors and even apparent confirmation from the trades last year, we still haven't had official word that a sequel to Todd Phillips' controversial smash-hit, Joker, is in-development.

Both Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have expressed interest in further exploring Arthur Fleck's tragic story, but have mostly remained noncommittal when asked if there's been any progress on the follow-up in interviews. However, it sounds like there has been some movement on the elusive project since our last update.

In his report on new DC Films Division heads Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy enlisting Phillips in an advisory capacity, reliable Puck insider Matthew Belloni claims that the filmmaker is getting "pretty close" on the sequel. Whether that means he's almost finished the script or is actually preparing to begin production is unclear, but the former seems more likely.

Joker made over $1 billion for Warner Bros., so the studio was always going to attempt to replicate its success with a sequel. By all accounts, cracking the story was the biggest roadblock, which is understandable given the first film's standalone nature.

How would you guys like to see Arthur's tale continue in a Joker sequel? Or do you think the original should be left alone? Drop us a comment down below.

Not sure this movie needs a sequel, but I am interested to see where it goes!

This is one of the few DC properties that I trust.

@BringTheRuckus - I hope it will be about him and Harley Quinn. Like, their power dynamic and her slowly falling for his games while he tries to use her to organize a mob to break him out of prison.

@BringTheRuckus - Does any movie ever made need a sequel? It’s very obvious why sequels are planned.

@Unites - That would be legit

@LiteralSense90 - As a member of the audience, I would argue some movies do need a sequel. But most movies, probably not. Some movies....definitely not.

But at the end of the day, if it's going to make the studio money, then it's a good idea for a studio to make it. That makes sense.

But personally as a fan, I tend to lean more into "should they make one?" instead of "could they make one?"

I am an optimist though, and I do think if they do make a sequel for this, they are going to knock it out of the park. And even if they don't .... I'm still going to watch it.

I haven’t watched Joker for a long time. Need to this weekend

the neat aspect of the original is being a self-contained elseworld-ish take on an established character that resolves its story by casting a shadow on the certainty of the events we just witnessed...a sequel negates pretty much all of that.

There are ways to go about doing a follow up to Joker, just don't think a direct sequel is the best option

Could do Harley, do a new take on the Mad Love origin, with Joaquin in a supporting role, considering this would be another one of (ish), end with Harley dead.

Also need a lex luthor movie

@dracula -

Eh, audiences still like Margot as Harley.
Don’t see WB getting another actress.

I say do One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest but with Joker

@HulkisHoly - do people really love her?

I think she has been improving but

Suicide Squad got a pretty terrible response

Birds of prey bombed

The Suicide Squad was the first good movie she was in and that bombed as well

Phillips can either lose himself to the ego and the grandure of his own success and prove that it was nothing but a fluke, or keep himsef grounded and do things the right way to secure another success. Phoenix being attached to this gives me hope because that guy seems to choose his work carefully.

Reproducing the same unbelievable success of the first one is almost an impossible task, so making a good movie is all he needs to do in my book.

Arthur gets a job as a cabby, picks up a young Harleen Quinzel, and kicks a six year old Bruce Wayne down a flight of stairs.

Send a check.

Interesting when saying “cracking the story was the biggest roadblock”…

When you consider Joaquin Phoenix just never does what’s rehearsed or doesn’t rehearsal at all so you can’t really trust the blocking in the script

and Zazie Betz was quoted as saying they threw out and re-wrote the script every evening before next day filming.

While I super love the realistic take on the Joker and hope to see more DC properties tackled in this way… so much of the joker working was lightning in a bottle. Which ironically is not that different from Todd Phillips is hangover films. The first one also, was lightning in a bottle that never was able to be duplicated.

I’m more of the opinion to believe they let the actors do whatever they wanted onset they constantly re-wrote the script every day and then they just took all the footage and edited it into a movie and it just happened to work

Which isn’t the worst approach (Ala A NEW HOPE).

So there is a part of me that is concerned the first movie was really just make it up as we go along approach and duplicating that will be really difficult.

Todd is currently working his way through the script of The Irishman, changing every character and location name to DC comics IP for this sequel
