THE BATMAN Director Matt Reeves Plans To Keep The Franchise "Grounded" But Would Adapt Mr. Freeze

The Batman director Matt Reeves talks about unwinding the fantastical elements of the Caped Crusader's world with a grounded vision for the hero, but shares his interest in bringing Mr. Freeze to screen.

Like Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy, The Batman will clearly deliver a grounded take on the Caped Crusader's world. Director Matt Reeves drove that point home during a recent press event, but despite admitting that he's looking to move away from some of the more "fantastical" elements of Batman's world, he remains open to trying to reinvent some of Gotham City's weirder denizens.

Among them is a villain we last saw on the big screen played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in Batman & Robin (the character also made his live-action debut on television in Gotham a few years back).

"In my view, I just feel drawn to finding the grounded version of everything. So to me it would be a challenge in an interesting way to try and figure out how that could happen, even the idea of something like Mr. Freeze, that such a great story, right? I think there's actually a grounded version of that story, which could be really powerful and could be really great," Reeves explained.

"I love the fantastical side of Batman, but this iteration, obviously, while being, to me, I think it is very comics faithful, but I don't think that this one is necessarily, it doesn't lean as hard into the fantastical, I guess. I think to me what would be interesting would be to try and unwind the fantastical and see, well, how could that make sense here? That's kind of my view, how I see it."

While some fans will inevitably be disappointed to hear that The Batman isn't going to fully embrace the wackiness of Gotham City, everything we've seen from the movie thus far suggests it will still be faithful to the source material. Sure, Robert Pattinson's Batman probably won't be squaring off with the versions of villains like Clayface and Poison Ivy we're familiar with, but with Edward Nashton/The Riddler reinvented as a Zodiac Killer-style murderer, that's not necessarily going to be a bad thing!

Regardless, we're intrigued to see what Reeves has in mind for both The Batman and this trilogy.

The Batman is set to be released in theaters on March 4.

@BlackBeltJones - Cranston as Fries or Reeves is a coward?

@MCUKnight11 - Reeves. He sounds open to the idea but he says this iteration won’t lean into the fantastical. There’s an interest there but also apprehension too. I was hoping for a more exciting desire to explore a character like that and not be ashamed, for lack of a better word, of the fantastical elements of him. But I get that grounded is his preference but Batman is inherently ridiculous. You can take him serious but also find the absurdity in his world.

Idk bro grounded plant of the apes more out there elements. The same can be done with Freeze. The animated series and the Arkham games did it but freeze’s human tragedy with his wife’s story is inherently grounded. You can ground the powers and suit in a dark science like Del Toro did with Hellboy.

I really don’t like Cranston as Fries. No offense it’s not even that he’s a bad pick. He’s a great actor.

But I feel like him playing an iconic bald villain is just too easy.

@BlackBeltJones - I wouldn't say Batman is inherently ridiculous, after all he started off as a mostly grounded noir character of the 30's/40's. But it is true that his gallery has evolved with a twinge of absurdity and while it's easy to see a character like Freeze in the gothic and more cartoonish world that Burton established, it's harder to convincingly do him in Nolan's crime drama world and Reeves' detective/noir movie world. I too wish to see Mr. Freeze redeemed though and at least Reeves is open to giving him that redemption, as opposed to shutting him out completely. This is a man who brought talking Apes to life with more character and heart than most film actors, so I'm not super worried in doing Freeze right.

@JesseCuster - yea what he did with Apes is evidence he could pull of a darker, grounded Freeze.

I think it could work in this world. The success of the Arkhamverse showed you can tell a dark, serious Batman story while still integrating the more comic-booky elements. The Long Halloween integrated the realistic noir features (the mob element, the murder mystery, mafia archetypes like Falcone & Maroni) with weird and strange villains.

I think Reeves is the perfect filmmaker to pull
this off too (Del Toro would do a hell of a job as well imo).

The Batman looks like its redeeming both The Pinguin and The Riddler, Mr Freeze also needs his redemption in live action.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Also poison ivy, she seems easier to ground than freeze, the animated series kept her pretty grounded

Right idea. Some other villains I'd like to see throughout the trilogy. https://media.tenor.com/images/6c4a447ab94794731955b585af55143a/tenor.gif" />

Freeze:
Yo, now I was downtown clubbin', ladies night
Seen shorty she was crazy, so I encased her in ice
And I approached baby like, "Ma, you look so much better frozen right?”

I'm cool with the grounded 7even approach and etc but Batman's mythos is just as great as his villain gallery. It's time to adapt these villains that need a reboot.

@1stDalek - Yeah, it takes forever for things to load, if they ever do. And sometimes I'm getting an error message that there's some problem with the site.

And like you said, all the sister sites at the bottom half are gone.

You can have a grounded take on some of this stuff. I mean Nolan did a lax version of Scarecrow for God's sake.

I 'get' what he's saying but it also doesn't have to be one or the other. It can be both.
