THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Opening On More Screens Overseas; Unlikely To Beat THE AVENGERS

Warner Bros. are hoping to greatly increase the international revenue of The Dark Knight Rises by opening on an impressive 15,000 screens. However, it still looks unlikely that it will top Marvel's The Avengers box office gross overseas. Read on for details.

Variety reports that in an effort to increase overseas revenue, Warner Bros. have increased the number of screens The Dark Knight Rises will play on. The last instalment in Christopher Nolan's Batman franchise may hold the #4 spot on the domestic list of highest grossing films, but sits way down at #35 on the list of international titles. The site speculates that this may have something to do with the character not being as popular internationally as he is in the US, and make the point that this makes it unlikely we'll see the film come anywhere near Marvel's The Avengers overseas gross of $840 million.

The Dark Knight Rises will play on 15,000 screens altogether, although the lengthy running time of two hours and forty seven minutes limits this number considerably. This is still nearly 4,000 more than The Dark Knight, which grossed $1 billion with $531 million domestic and $469 million overseas. Not a huge difference, but enough that Warner Bros. are apparently feeling the pressure to up its takings later this month, despite one rival studio exec saying, "It really is going to be a dominant film internationally, but I don't know that it will have quite the same appeal as 'The Avengers' for everyone from 8 to 80."

However, there is a huge amount of interest in The Dark Knight Rises (which is being heavily promoted as the final chapter of Christopher Nolan's "Epic Trilogy") and it will roll out in 17 markets on July 20th, before opening in another 38 the following weekend. Also good for the studio is the fact that China will more than likely show this instalment after declining to allow screenings of The Dark Knight back in 2008. Which do you think will eventually come out on top at the box office? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ "The Dark Knight Rises" is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The screenplay is written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven, who previously teamed on “Batman Begins” and the record-breaking blockbuster "The Dark Knight." The executive producers are Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull, with Jordan Goldberg serving as co-producer. The film is based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Batman was created by Bob Kane.

STARRING:

Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman

Gary Oldman as Commissioner Jim Gordon
Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox
Tom Hardy as Bane
Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman
Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake
Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate

I actually don't care who comes out top in the box office, I want to see these films so I can decide on which I enjoy most and I have to say at the moment The Amazing Spider-Man is my film of the year for enjoyment factor.

Really as long as they make enough money to earn continued journeys on screen, it really dosent matter. Avengers will not be beaten either internationally or domestically by TDKR but they will still both stand as giant box office earners. TASM will make enough for a sequel and still be deemed a success so thats also all that matters. I love seeing how movies do at the box office but im sick of this petty fighting over box office, it doesent make the film any better ir worse for it. Of the 5 superhero movies released this year, we have one flop in ghost rider also it was a very average film theirs always one, but normally its one of the more anticipated movies that disappoints hugely (e.g. Wolverine origins, green lantern) this year all three major superhero films will be successful both in film and boxoffice and thats a great thing! And hell who knows Dredd might not be to bad either hopefully. Id say this is the strongest year for CBMs yet with few disappointments.

Does it really matter? Stop comparing apples to oranges. There is alot of factors that attribute one movie making more than the other. Just because a movie makes alot of money doesn't mean that its any good. I loved the Avengers and most likely I will love TDKR.

I personally don't care about the great boxoffice war of 2012...... I just want a quality motion picture made with care devotion and hard work, which i know Nolan always delivers. Do i want, as a Batman fan and a cinephile, the film to make a lot of money in the box office? Yes... Do i want it to be a critical darling? Yes. But honestly, 'm mostly in it for my own enjoyment.

He's more popular overseas than in the USA, actually. Avengers was not popular at all until the film.

And TDKR never had any chance of making more money. The popcorn guzzlers won't watch it and there's no 3D. It'll make money, but definitely not as much as Avengers.

I really never care about the Box Office gross, or whatever you call it. The Avengers breaking the record meant nothing to me. It's not about the money. (And it has nothing to do with me, either!) If both movies are good, I'm already pleased.

If The Dark Knight Rises earns more than I will laugh myself to death. Dont get me wrong, I loved the Avengers, and I think I will love The Dark Knight Rises but Batman earning more money would be just funny!

What is the point? Both movies will be successful and that's good for all CBM fans. So, this article does nothing but push an agenda of making it Marvel VS DC again.

It won't beat the Avengers. Anyone that thinks that just needs to face facts. Avengers dumbed it down for the 3D audience. Dark Knight isn't doing that. Plus, Avengers had 4 iconic heroes and, not a bad thing, was more of a "pop corn" flick.

Ultimately, who gives a f-ck? We aren't getting a slice of the action and they are just going to reboot it in a few years anyway.

The baiting and agenda pushing is getting old though.

@darthbobtarkas

where did you hear/see/read that idea?

considering the size of the markets for these films compared to america itself. and how much money films like avatar, lord of the rings, pirates ect even inception make outside america it does show that tdk making less abroad than domestically that the real love for the character is in his home of origin.

and why wouldnt the popcorn guzzlers see tdkr? they saw tdk. unless you are talking about the heath ledger arguement and i doubt the "popcorn guzzlers" were the onces drawn in by hype around the last performance of an actor. a batman action film is surely more their thing.

I've been saying that speculating on Box Office numbers is like betting on horses for us nerds, but it's getting a little tiring even for me. Remember when people were amazed when a movie made $500 million? Now people act as if a movie making less than a billion is a failure. Very few movies accomplish such a feat. And honestly, any movie that's in the same club with Avatar and Transformers 2 & 3 isn't necessarily in good company anyways. TDKR will make however much it makes based on the circumstances surrounding that particular movie. Likewise with Avengers. As a comic fan I'm happy to see that three of the most anticipated (and successful) movies of the year are CBMs's (I know TDKR ain't out yet, but is there any doubt it'll do well). For me that's enough. Now if we can get an even half way decent JLA out of Warner's then I'm good.

@Fogs and GoiLL it's because people have built up this "rivalary" for so long that they want their franchise to win. The sad thing is that it won't go away. It'll be IM3 vs. MOS next year.

A lot of you are saying TDKR won't beat The Avengers at the box office because of 3D etc...and I understand everybody has opinion wrong or right...but nobody can predict the future...and alot of you have no idea how big this movie is gonna be...i'm actually going to the midnight showing of TDKR and I've never done that before for any movie and I'll probably go see it a couple more times throughout it's opening weekend.
