THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Producer Emma Thomas On Bane, Comic Book Influences And More

Emma Thomas (wife of Christopher Nolan and producer of The Dark Knight Rises) talked to Collider recently about Bane's role in the threequel and has assured fans that while their take on the villain isn't 100% faithful to the comic book version, the source material has still played a big role in how the story came together. To read the rest of the interview, be sure to click on the link below to head on over to the site.

"Without saying too much, I think we’ve retained what works for this universe and for our world. [Bane]'s definitely recognizable. But then there are some things that we’ve changed, because I think they wouldn’t have fit into Chris Nolan’s version of the world. I think that’s one of the interesting things about Bane as a choice. We were obviously never going to revisit the Joker and you don’t want to be trying to chase that. So it’s fun to have a very different sort of villain in this and a different sort of challenge for Batman to meet, much more physical. It’s almost a more even match in some ways, you know, in a physical sense. You just don’t want to do the same thing again."

"I don’t want to sound like it’s all about brawn, because it’s not. He’s definitely a smart guy. We are definitely touching on that, there’s no doubt. I think that that’s why it’s an interesting match for Batman after the Joker, who was just purely about chaos and playing with people. Bane has a plan."

"I think that Chris and David Goyer are very mindful. It’s great for them to have that massive treasure chest, really, of the comic book storylines to draw from. Once again, as I was saying in terms of how things fit into our world, ultimately what they’re doing is completing the stories that were started in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. They’re drawing from comic book elements, undoubtedly. I can’t speak to which specific elements because that’s their thing. But it’s a mixture of both."

So, nothing particularly revealing, but no one involved with The Dark Knight Rises is willing to give too much away, meaning that the characters and plot are still shrouded in mystery for the most part. Are you happy with what we have so far learned about Christopher Nolan's take on Bane? Would you prefer a version closer to that of the comic books? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place.

Nothing to revealing, but as long as Bane isn't a dumb brute, then I am happy.

Hopefully this shuts some of the haters up. Bane's attitude is being done right, and that's what matters.

@PaulRom Very true, fact is would we rather have the smart intelligent Bane, but wears a different costume, despite the drug being different, still retains that addiction from the comics, or the Batman and Robin version that used Venom, was a large muscle build and had a very faithful costume.

If it's a really good film, but it's sacreligious I'll be on here bashing the [frick] outta the thing.
If it's an average film, but it's faithful (enough), I'll come on here and bash Nolan (like with The Dark Knight).
But if it's average AND shits on the source material, I'll never shut up about this thing. Really, 50 years down the line, when Disney is making Superman Vs Spawn cartoons, I'll still be on here saying, "At least it was better than The Dark Knight Goddamn Rises!

@P-Zero That is true, but even if they used the version from the comics he would still retain that weakness, Bats, as he has done several times, would just pull the wires from his venom tubes.

Although I don't see the fact that if the mask comes off it would put a stop to him, in the prologue he states it would be more painful for the remover of the mask then Bane himself. I know could be bluffing, but I think he will be able to go a while without it on.

I think what will separate Bane's intelligence from The Joker's is that the Joker's schemes were simply to create chaos. I imagine Bane's schemes will be part of a grand plan, and presumably the plan of The League of Shadows.

What I want to know is whyu Bane wants to destroy Batman and his city. In the comics, it was two-fold, he wanted to rise to power and defeat the bat-monster that haunted his dreams as a boy. He was on a great spiritual journey, in a real bad mother[frick]er kind of way.
But are his reasons the same in this, because if not then I really want to know what his motivational drive is. Because that's the plot.
Knightrider
Knightrider - 5/28/2012, 5:47 PM
@DukeAcureds I guess it is wait and see, you never know, maybe he was part of the LoS, and was meant to be the one to "Stand at Ra's side" but then Bruce took his place and since he has wanted to destroy what Bruce has stood for and since Bruce left and Ra's died he became in charge by default.

Perhaps he wears the mask because during Bruce's escape from the League in BB he was caught in the explosion.

SuperBat@ Like with your Hulk article, I completely agree. The Dark Knight was full of flaws. Nolan can be pretentious and self-indulgent sometimes. Feelin you, brother, feelin' you. But not in a gay way.

I just wish I could see a Bat film that draws from the comic and reflect it in a balanced way that shows both comic and realistic influences.

I hate it when I hear Directors and Producers talk about their "changes". Just give us Batman we all know and love, and also his awesome villains.

Rocksteady got it right. And they're a Game Studio

@SuperBat77 I agree no-one is perfect, I guess people get frustrated when comments flood in from people who just say "It Sucks" without reason, that even constructive criticism can get lost between those sorts of comments, and as such may accidentally get seen as being part of the above group.

Nolan is not perfect, nor are his Bat movies, but either were the Marvel movies including Avengers. What will work for some will not work for all.

@Dahamma I will agree with you in some points there. I really enjoy the Nolan films, but if a JL film with batman is too be made, the Arkham City feel, would be a great balance between fantasy and reality.

@Dahamma because it's a video game, obviously. You can have as many fantastical elements as possible.

" It’s almost a more even match in some ways, you know, in a physical sense."

But...Bane and Batman aren't supposed to be an equal physical match. Bane should be vastly superior to Batman in a physical sense. Both in stature and strength.

Was unsure about Bane's design at first, but it's grown on me.
Knightrider
Knightrider - 5/28/2012, 5:57 PM
@Ranger14 Actually that is not the case, in Knightfall Bane knew a direct confrontation would result in him losing against Batman, he had to wear him down quite a bit before he could excerpt his physical strength so easily
Knightrider

@Jduke25 When you make a comment I see that Supe's avatar and I am always reminder that not only is TDKR so close, but so is the prospect of a MoS trailer.

We need an Arkham movie to really bring in a whole new version. Keep it dark of course, like Batman should be, but this way we can skip the whole origin story reboot idea and go straight into the meat of Batman, but still establish a difference in the Nolan Universe.

@KnigthRider
And I really really enjoy Nolans take on Batman too, not bashing him at all. Its just bittersweet sometimes ya know? Like whats awesome about Batman that's not in Nolans films is that since he lost his parents or his Family, he finds a new one through robin, alfred, Nightwing, catwoman, etc. I just want to see all of them on screen some day.

Im sure this will be an excellent film. But hopefully next time around we get a Batman with more fantastical elements.
