The Dark Knight Rises Star Tom Hardy Returns As Bane - But Not In A Way You Could Ever Predict

Tom Hardy has resurrected his iconic Bane voice from The Dark Knight Rises 14 years later for a surprising new rap track, giving Batman fans an unexpected blast from the past.

Tom Hardy has brought back one of his most memorable movie performances, unexpectedly resurrecting his distinctive Bane voice from The Dark Knight Rises for a new rap track.

Directed by Christopher Nolan, the 2012 movie brought Christian Bale's Batman trilogy to an epic conclusion, with the Caped Crusader facing his most physically imposing opponent yet. Hardy played Bane, the hulking mercenary who arrives in Gotham City and launches a brutal assault designed to break the Bat and everything he stands for.

The actor underwent a major physical transformation to play the role. However, his unusual, often hard-to-understand voice arguably became the most talked-about, perhaps even controversial, aspect of his performance.

Now, 14 years after The Dark Knight Rises arrived in theaters, Hardy has "reprised" the role in "Grim-Visaged War," a track from his debut album, Czarface Meets Frankie Pulitzer. The song sees the actor recite a monologue from William Shakespeare's Richard III while using the unmistakable voice he used in Nolan's follow-up to Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

Bane's voice was notably different from Hardy's natural speaking voice, with the character delivering his dialogue through a heavily stylised vocal performance. However, audiences initially struggled to understand some of his lines due to the film's original sound mix.

Nolan subsequently adjusted the audio mix to make Bane's dialogue more intelligible, but Hardy's odd delivery meant that subtitles were hugely beneficial when the threequel finally arrived on DVD and Blu-ray.

"The choice of the accent is actually a man called Bartley Gorman, who was a bare-knuckle fighter. A Romani gypsy," Hardy previously said of his Bane voice. "I wanted to underpin the Latin, but a Romani Latin opposed to Latino. His particular accent is very specific, which was a gypsy accent. So that’s why it was difficult to understand. But once you tune into it, you get it. I hope."

He continued, "Chris Nolan’s take on [Bane] was intrinsically lateral because he has a way of wanting and desiring to breathe a realism and a lateral thought into that which has already come through the comic book world. I think largely that’s going to upset some people, and there are some people that are going to really hang on to that."

"And I’m one of those people that really enjoys that actually, to be quite honest – carving a new way through something that’s already a set piece on the planet."

Czarface Meets Frankie Pulitzer was released on August 28 and features 15 tracks. The album is a collaboration between Hardy, performing as Frankie Pulitzer, and Inspectah Deck, 7L, and Esoteric, collectively known as Czarface.

While Hardy's involvement in a rap album might come as a surprise to some fans, this isn't actually his first foray into hip-hop. The actor previously recorded music in the late 1990s under the name Tommy No. 1, long before he became one of Hollywood's most recognisable stars.

My favorite Bane quote from DK:RISES has to be: "Mumble, mumble, destroy Gotham, mumble, mumble, my permission to die." 🤓

Still wasn't as great as The Dark Knight.

Solid AF way to end the trilogy though.

Christopher Nolan paved the way for how a comic book movie should be.

Marvel took some notes obviously

@Nolanite - The Dark Knight was never going to be topped, and as far as I and many are concerned, it still hasn't. With that said, Rises is a great comic book movie in its own right, and faaaaaaar better than anything we got in the DCEU or DCU.

@TheJok3r - Where Nolan messed up with Rises at is where he wrote it to be the last one

@Nolanite - I enjoyed it but it didn’t come close to the Dark Knight. His take on Bane was certainly unique but the plot had more holes than Swiss cheese and the Blame/Robin thing was dumb.

@GarthRanzz - Winter Soldier is definitely up there though; it's not as good as TDK, but it came far closer than anything DC has produced ever since.

@Bucky74 -

You're pretty correct about that. It had it's flaws but overall it was a good movie. Production was insane AF.

Only a man like Christopher Nolan could accomplish that

@Nolanite - I still think the biggest missed opportunity in that movie was not having Bane reveal Harvey Dent at the stadium instead of the nuclear scientist. Showing Gotham what really happened to their hero DA would have really crippled them.

The Dark Knight Rises is one of the most underrated comic book films of all time. It is the second best Batman film and a top five all time best comic book film. A reminder that Warner Brothers made the biggest mistake in cinema history by not pairing the masterpiece of the Dark Knight Trilogy with Man of Steel. Had they done that, they would have surpassed Marvel, would not be sold three times, and would be buying other studios.

"If I take off your mask, will you die?"
"It would be extremely painful."
"You're a big guy."
"For you."

IMO Hardy was the best thing about TDKR, by miles. It's a master class in physical presence; he projects as being the size of a mountain despite being an inch or two shorter than Bale.

@LoudLon - for everything they got wrong I can’t argue against Tom Hardy’s intensity in the role. That alone made it almost work. If it wasn’t for the way they ruined him with the twist ending and death he could have been a really good villain, if still a bad Bane.

The fact that this movie is Nolan's weakest shows how incredibly high he's set the bar because it's still pretty damn good.

Hardy's Bane might have sidestepped his ethnicity, but he nailed the physicality, strategy and intelligence of him. Sure, they swapped out venom for painkillers, but it's still a crippling dependency. Consolidating his origin with Ra's was a smart narrative move that reframed the whole Lazarus Pit concept nicely for Nolan's grounded take. If anything, his link to Talia is stronger in this film than the thirsty Bane from the comics. Sure, Talia's death rattle is a bit weak, and the cops are really stupid, but it's a great ending to the saga that serves as a true sequel to both BB and TDK.
Magus
Magus - 8/30/2026, 1:39 PM
@Why - Hard disagree. The dumb voice made him into a joke and Hardy didn’t have the stature for the action scenes. Nolan sucked at action at the time and back break has terrible wire work and looks like wrestling.

Nothing about Bane was grounded. It was all goofy as hell.

He is also turned into a generic thug for Talia, losing his intelligence because it was her plan and her origin story in the prison. He is then randomly killed by Catwoman shooting a rocket during his show down with Batman.

This is offensive compared to comic Bane.
Magus
Magus - 8/30/2026, 1:48 PM
Nolan isn’t infallible either. Tenant sucks too. His movies tend to be pretentious and stilted.

Just look how unimaginative his movie about dreams is. A sexless affair lacking any surreal imagery. It also plagiarizes shots directly from the anime Paprika.

The Odyssey was great though and showed a lot of growth.

@Magus - I quite liked the voice as it created this sort of dissonance with his brutality but fair enough. I'd definitely prefer a page to screen adaptation next time he comes around though, and for him to be orchestrating the plot like he should be.
