Andy Muschietti recently gave a very interesting response to being asked about potentially taking the helm of the planned DCU Batman reboot, The Brave and the Bold, which led to several reliable insiders claiming that he was indeed in line to direct the project.
Now, Variety has made it official: The Flash filmmaker will put his stamp on the next big-screen incarnation of the Caped Crusader.
“We saw The Flash even before taking the reins at DC Studios, and knew we were in the hands of not only a visionary director but a massive DC fan,” Gunn and Safran told the trade in a joint statement. “It’s a magnificent film – funny, emotional, thrilling – and Andy’s affinity and passion for these characters and this world just resonates through every frame.
So, when it came time to find a director for The Brave and the Bold, there was really only one choice. Luckily, Andy said yes. Barbara signed on to produce with us and we were on our way. They’re an extraordinary team, and we couldn’t have better or more inspiring partners as we embark on this thrilling new adventure in the DCU.”
Barbara Muschietti is also on board as a producer.
The film doesn't currently have a screenwriter attached, but it has been confirmed that The Flash scribe Christina Hodson was "circling" before deciding to work on a Fast and Furious movie instead.
In addition, the Muschiettis have signed new multi-year first-look deals with Warner Bros. Pictures and Warner Bros. Television Group/Max to develop big and small screen projects.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to strengthen our longstanding partnership with these unceasingly driven, incredibly gifted filmmakers,” said studio co-chairs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy. “Between Andy’s singular skill and vision as a director and Barbara’s sharp, far-sighted instincts as a producer, they’re a true filmmaking dream team, and channel their lifelong passion into films that deliver as both compelling human stories and heart-pounding crowd pleasers. It’s one of the reasons their movies connect so broadly and powerfully with audiences all over the world, and dovetails perfectly with the kinds of films we want to make.”
Along with a new take on the Dark Knight, The Brave and the Bold will introduce a very different Robin in the form of Damian Wayne, a "murderous tween raised by assassins who also happens to be the son Batman never knew he had."
It's probably going to be a while before we get any casting announcements, but the rumors are sure to begin flowing fairly soon!
The Flash is now playing in several locations, and opens wide across the US tomorrow. Have you been to see it yet? You can check out our review here.
