Deadline reports that The Batman director Matt Reeves has signed an overall first-look film deal with Warner Bros. Now, the filmmaker will call that studio home, which makes perfect sense when he's so deeply involved with the Caped Crusader's franchise on the big and small screens.
"Making this legendary studio my home is a dream," Reeves said in a statement today. "I am so excited to be working with Mike [De Luca], Pam [Abdy], and Channing [Dungey] and our teams to bring captivating stories I am truly passionate about to the big and small screen."
The trade also confirms that, as part of this deal, Reeves is currently penning The Batman sequel with Project Power scribe Mattson Tomlin. He actually worked on the first movie, though didn't receive a credit for his contributions. Among the other upcoming DC projects Reeves is currently working on are The Penguin TV series starring Colin Farrell and a show set in Arkham Asylum.
This deal has been put together under Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav's watch, so, while he may have scrapped Batgirl, it appears The Batman franchise is safe.
De Luca says, "Keeping Matt and creating a home for him to do more projects in the Batman universe but also originals, was very important to us." Dungey, meanwhile, adds: "We look forward to continuing our partnership with the wonderful 6th & Idaho team and expanding the world Matt so artfully created with The Batman film through our upcoming series The Penguin."
If Reeves has only just started writing The Batman 2, chances are we aren't going to be watching the sequel on the big screen this side of 2025. There's a chance it could be released in 2024, but even that seems a tad optimistic. However, we're just glad that Robert Pattinson's time as the Dark Knight hasn't reached a premature end.
