What Went Wrong With BATMAN AND ROBIN? See The Making Of Video

An almost 30 minute long making of featurette for Joel Schumacher's infamous 1997 Bat-flick - largely considered to be among the worst movies ever made - has found its way online, and it's a doozy. The director, cast and crew are not shy about letting their feelings on the movie known!

If, like me, you are fascinated with just HOW bad Batman And Robin actually is then the following will be a must watch. It's very rare to see those involved with a movie trash it in the official making of video, but that is exactly what we get here. "The first one felt like we were making a movie," says Chris O'Donnel who played Robin in both Schumacher movies. "The second felt like we were making a toy commercial." The director himself also chimes in on some of the pretty strange "suggestions" made to him by the studio before shooting. "In Batman & Robin, the studio wanted it to be more family friendly and kid friendly," he says. "And a word I never heard before ... more toyetic." There's also some pretty cool concept designs which give us a look at what some of the characters could have looked like.

Yeah, yeah, hindsight's 20-20. Suuuure, Mr. Schumacher, you were the victim of those corporate scumbags angling for toy money. Totally not your fault.

I mean, who could've known that a script that starts with "Batman and Robin skyboard on rocket-ship doors" would somehow go wrong?

To me, the funniest aspect of it all is to honestly put yourself back in time, to this era. And into the actor's and director's minds. Did any of them really think, "Wow, this is a great script. I think this will be a fun, big blockbuster. May be the best Batman ever!!" It's like Ed Wood (Plan 9 From Hollywood fame) thinking he matched Martin Scorsese's style and talent.

Uhhh, I don't want to seem snarky, but why is this article-worthy? This is a special feature from the Batman and Robin special edition DVD and Blu-Ray. It's, like, eight years old.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I love bashing B&R as much as anybody, but isn't this a bit like flogging a dead horse with a dead badger?

That's been on YouTube for ages. You can also watch the making of the first three as well.

I remember writing this one off early in the making of it. I was interested when they were talking Patrick Stewart for Mr. Freeze, but things quickly went downhill. When Schumacher gave an interview where he essentially said he thought Batman should be over the death of his parents at this point, I pretty much gave up all hope.

Flawed movie but looking back it was campy fun. At least it wasn't all dark and depressing like Nolan's were.

The funniest part of that movie is the scene in the observatory where Batman is fighting and does a back flip but If look closely it is a midget in a bat costume!

This video is included in the bluray box-set. My favorite part of it is when Joel Schumacher takes responsibility for the movie. He says that the studio and toy company were pressuring him but "I'm not criticizing anyone, I signed on to do this job."

Well, at least Batman did acknowledge Superman's existence in this movie, and IMO that's the closest they ever got to achieve a DC cinematic universe.

@DefcoN Yeah, I'm sure they thought they had the stronghold over comic book movies back then too. At least this movie tried something different. I imagine Schumacher was trying to be innovative and different like Burton's Batman, but it just came off as extra cheesy.

And god forbid those Bat nipples.

How about the part where Robin is getting drowned by Ivy's vines and he pops up out of the pool, the film stops, and is then rewound?

I'm pretty sure there's been multiple youtube uploads of this 2005 dvd featurette "online" for years now.

Somehow this is worthy of main?

Kilmer's suit had nipples in Forever. Everyone seems to forget.

Oh Joel when you find yourself explaining why you made a piece of shit you need to just go back home and suck another greek dude's cod piece. This is not just a bad batman movie, or a bad movie, this is a bad idea that never should have made it past the front gate of Warner Bros.
