Before we dive into my argument here, let's just say that this could really be "Why _____________ is good for __________". It could be Chris Pratt and Star-Lord, Henry Cavill and Superman; the names and roles change but it's always the same. You may be a logical individual, but this is geared towards the illogical in the audience.
So Ben Affleck is going to be Batman. You'd almost think from the reaction on this site and many other geek-friendly sites that this is on par with an assassination or nuclear bomb going off in major metropolitan city. It's chaos, anger, and misunderstanding.
When I heard that Affleck was cast, my first thought was, "Let's see footage". This isn't to say that I'm unaware that Affleck was in Gigli, or that he was excellent in Argo. I know of his past films.
It's just that, directors have what we call a 'vision' for the film. They have a unique and stylistic take on the movie and will do things from edit the screenplay, to cast certain actors in roles.
Snyder has chosen Affleck, and while we may whine and complain, think of it this way: this is only a small part of Snyder's vision. He has a script made for Affleck, he'll shoot some great shots, and even improv maybe as the movie goes along. Just because we know of the casting doesn't mean we know what Snyder's vision for this movie is.
The same thing happened with Guardians of the Galaxy. We heard various pieces of casting, and there's always the cynics who are bashing the casting. Then came that leaked footage many of us saw, and I think the general consensus was that the footage killed it and 'sold' people on Guardians.
The thing is though, you can't take tangible pieces of a directors vision and base your opinion based on that. Affleck could be the best Batman ever, or the worst; he has to put on the cowl and perform under Snyder's vision -- until then...
