Why Fanboys Need To Simmer Down & Trust Directors

Why Fanboys Need To Simmer Down & Trust Directors

While the hot topic is Affleck playing Batman, this decades old argument is the same crap, just a different pile. Allow me to discuss how a sect of fanboys are not fully understanding the movie making process.

Before we dive into my argument here, let's just say that this could really be "Why _____________ is good for __________". It could be Chris Pratt and Star-Lord, Henry Cavill and Superman; the names and roles change but it's always the same. You may be a logical individual, but this is geared towards the illogical in the audience.

So Ben Affleck is going to be Batman. You'd almost think from the reaction on this site and many other geek-friendly sites that this is on par with an assassination or nuclear bomb going off in major metropolitan city. It's chaos, anger, and misunderstanding.

When I heard that Affleck was cast, my first thought was, "Let's see footage". This isn't to say that I'm unaware that Affleck was in Gigli, or that he was excellent in Argo. I know of his past films.

It's just that, directors have what we call a 'vision' for the film. They have a unique and stylistic take on the movie and will do things from edit the screenplay, to cast certain actors in roles.

Snyder has chosen Affleck, and while we may whine and complain, think of it this way: this is only a small part of Snyder's vision. He has a script made for Affleck, he'll shoot some great shots, and even improv maybe as the movie goes along. Just because we know of the casting doesn't mean we know what Snyder's vision for this movie is.

The same thing happened with Guardians of the Galaxy. We heard various pieces of casting, and there's always the cynics who are bashing the casting. Then came that leaked footage many of us saw, and I think the general consensus was that the footage killed it and 'sold' people on Guardians.

The thing is though, you can't take tangible pieces of a directors vision and base your opinion based on that. Affleck could be the best Batman ever, or the worst; he has to put on the cowl and perform under Snyder's vision -- until then...

I don't really like Batman being noticably taller than Superman but oh well. Ben could be great or could be horrible we will just have to wait and see.

The funny thing is, some haters don't want us to use the ledger argument. They say 'Heath was different! He was seen as a good actor before hand' I have to say that counter argument is bullshit! Because that didn't stop people from despising the casting choice in the first place.

The reason I don't trust Affleck is for a few reasons one while not a bad actor really he has no range as far as I have ever seen him in. Armageddon, Dogma, Daredevil, The Town, Argo, Pearl Harbor everything I have seen him in he is playing a variation of the same character in mannerisms, voice, and just general character type he just doesn't have range. The man is by far a much better director then an actor and really that is where he should stay. I also don't feel this is just the right choice for Batman making him so old being in his 40's I don't like that at all.

Lastly I will say that the Ledger card is so overplayed because one time does not make the rule. There have been plenty of absolutely terrible casting choices Clooney as Batman, Reynolds as GL, Berry as Catwoman, etc... Also Ledger gave the performance of his life that in turn partly cost him his life since multiple reports afterword said how he barely slept 2 hours a day after the role and how he was messed up by it. I don't see Affleck in anyway giving anything close to this kind of performance since again the man has shown no range in his acting ability.

I am not rooting against the man or have anything against him I just don't believe he is the right choice. Hopefully he proves me wrong but I will continue to have my doubts about him until I see the movie.

I too was shocked when I heard the news, but Ben is the closest that any version will be to what Bruce Wayne looks like. You may be thinking he's going to be all smirky and happy through the movie, but I'm sure that's not the case. He will be the first actor that plays Bruce Wayne that actually resembles the version from the comics and people are outraged. Shut up.
