Okay, let me begin with saying that I do not think Batman V. Superman is a great movie. It had amazing potential to bring together the two biggest and most famous superheroes of all time. With a-for the most part-amazing cast, superb visuals, and a complex plot, it still managed to fall flat to most critics and audiences. Yes, the Ultimate Edition improves the film, but the fact that it was not the movie we got in theaters is just plain wrong. This is clearly a different kind of superhero movie, frankly eight years after the genre blew up, and it is just was we needed. With superhero film fatigue slowly becoming an epidemic in Hollywood, no one knows how much fuel is left in the engine. It has been suggested that this genre will follow suit of the Western, to die out with only a few decent films every couple of years. But, can we prevent this? I strongly believe that films like BvS will either make or break the Superhero genre. I was thrilled for this movie to come out. Although later I was also amazingly annoyed when I found out that it was not receiving the best of reviews. I thought to myself, “How could they mess up a movie about Batman and Superman finally coming together?”. I would understand if they screwed up Guardians of the Galaxy or Ant-Man, but this? Of course, I waited to see it myself. Upon seeing it, I agreed with the critics, it was not good. But the film left me thinking a long while after viewing it. It was different. It interested me how political and how “un-superhero like” it felt. And no, not in a bad way. Of course I would prefer a fantastic movie, but I extremely believe the formula BvS followed is the kind of different formula that this genre needs, and that it could absolutely produce a truly incredible movie. Zack Snyder started this trend with 2009’s Watchmen, and did not follow along with 2013’s Man of Steel. With the massive amounts of Marvel movies, which at this point seem somewhat repetitive, it was relieving to get this new taste of movie again. BvS was not a story that relied on comedy or visuals. Not saying all Marvel films do this, I enjoy the Marvel movies as well and they are clearly winning when it comes to cinema right now. I refer to films in general have become more reliant on thus. This movie lived and breathed a fresh story. I did not like the movie, but hell, did I respect it. As stated before, the Ultimate edition did improve the movie and flipped my viewpoint regarding some aspects of the film. With more Clark Kent and more reason behind why certain things happen, I no longer only respected BvS, but now I actually liked it. Sure, the movie was not perfect, not even damn close. But there is no denying that this was a change in superhero cinema, it was different, it was fresh, and most of all; it gave us room to breathe. There have been movies like this to change the tone and inject a new formula into the genre, but this was a movie with Batman, with Superman, and even introduces the whole Justice League and a larger universe as a whole. These elements may overpack the movie where it could’ve been done better and have just been a truly great Batman fighting Superman movie, but in an age where we are overloaded with much of the same, we needed this film and more of the “goods” inside of it. This movie was not the best, but it didn't have to be, it was the start of a much larger universe that could influence much more. Batman V. Superman is a movie we deserve, in which I believe a broad audience does not understand. Which is possibly why it was received the way it was. Casual movie goers are just so used to your typical movie, that when something fresh and new is released, they simply hate it for being different. An example towards that can be films such as Fight Club and The Shining, where critics and others alike disliked the films at first for not seeing the brilliance behind them, but over time grew to like them. This is a path I believe BvS may possibly follow. In an age where there is much of the same, Batman V. Superman was a rushed, but intellectual film that will no doubt turn heads toward the future.
