Why Doomsday Is The Perfect Villain For Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Why Doomsday Is The Perfect Villain For Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

It's hard to believe Batman v Superman comes out next month, I remember when it was first announced back in 2013 at Comic-Con.

Now with the confirmed appearance Doomsday being in the movie there has been discussion saying it's too soon and I personally disagree. We know Batman and Superman can't fight forever. The subtitle of the movie is Dawn of Justice for a reason.

HE'S NOT A REAL CHARACTER

Doomsday is purely just a mindless killing machine. He is not the type of character you can build an entire film around. He is basically all brawns and no brain. He's just a plot device that was used to kill Superman because Superman comics weren't selling back in the 90s. Having him be the threat that unites Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman is a perfect idea. Doomsday is not Darkseid or Brainiac so having him appear in Batman v Superman is really no problem.

HE FITS THE SCALE OF THIS MOVIE

The scale for Batman v Superman has definitely raised the scales up a bit since Man of Steel and feels like just one big epic so far. Doomsday fits the tone of this movie as he is that type of threat that could possibly extinct mankind with his threatening physical presence. When you bring up another villain that could potentially be in Batman v Superman like Bizzaro, Amazo or Lex Luthor in his battle suit, they just don't fit the overall grand scheme of things and scale of the movie. Doomsday is the one that could definitely seriously threaten Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman. He is most famously known as the villain who "killed" Superman in the comic books.

IT MAKES SENSE FROM A STORY PERSPECTIVE

Also, from a story perspective it makes the most sense seeing how Lex obviously has Zod's body in his hands. It also makes sense as Lex wants something that could go toe to toe with Superman so he cooks up Doomsday from Zod's body. From a story perspective Doomsday makes the most sense in this film and fits in the overall picture.

HE IS THE TYPE OF CHARACTER THAT DOESN'T STAY DEAD

The one thing about Doomsday is he always comes back and you can never defeat him the same way before. Now I know what I said before about you can't center a movie around Doomsday as he just too one-dimensional but you could possibly bring him back for a Justice League movie or adapt "The Death of Superman" storyline in the Man of Steel sequel.

Anways, that's my perspective so let me know your thoughts. Do you agree or disagree?

Very good points and I agree with all of them. Can't wait for March 25th!

I still think its too early for Doomsday. But I understand the need to use him.

I still think Metallo would have been a better choice. Have him be someone who got severely injured during the battle of Metropolis. He contemplates his life was ruined by Superman, and Luthor gives him an offer, thus he becomes Metallo and is sent to kill Superman.

Great article! Right from the start I thought that using Doomsday in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is a little too soon, and I still stand by that. However, I do agree that he could work you don't need a backstory and because the only thing that makes him special is that he killed Superman. I'm very intrigued by how the Trinity will defeat him, especially considering the fact that he shoots laser from his eyes and mouth, which I'm not a fan of at all. They better bring him back in this universe, and I really hope that his spikes grow.

Nice write up but I still think it's way too soon for Doomsday. I think it would've worked much better if Lex had created someone else like Bizarro (which would've made sense due to the manipulation of Kryptonian DNA, possibly a combination of Zod's and Superman's, resulting in an abomination) or Metallo, who could've presented a very different sort of threat that would've also made Batman a very necessary ally to Superman by the end of the movie. Both of those villains are pretty basic in that there's not a lot of story around them, at least not enough for an entire film, but they'd both be perfect foils for Superman while including Lex in the movie as the big bad behind the scenes. They're sort of one and done villains, you know? You use them in a single movie in a basic role, and then you don't need to see them again.

Doomsday is also a one and done villain, and is also pretty basic - you're right in saying he's pretty much just a plot device - however, unlike the other two villains I mentioned, he's a very specific plot device, in that he's meant to kill Superman. That's the only reason he exists in the comics, and it'd be a shame for him not to do that in the movies. Having said that, it seems way too soon to do the whole Death and Return story in the movies, meaning he's kind of wasted here. Plus, while I agree with your point that Doomsday isn't interesting enough or even enough of a character to sustain a whole film as a villain, he doesn't need to be, as a film dedicated to the Death and Return storyline would have enough going on to fully justify its existence as a movie and would have a lot more going on after Doomsday kills Superman, because he's not necessary for the rest. What I'm trying to say is, following the resurrection, there are so many directions that movie could go in terms of plot and potential villains for Superman to face, that having Doomsday as a plot device to set it up early on in the film is perfectly fine, so there really isn't any need to shoehorn him into BvS.

Good article, not a big deal, but I think he looks too much like the Abomination (from what I've seen so far). But then again, I'm sure most people don't even remember him at this point.
