Angela Bassett played Queen Ramonda in 2018's Black Panther and will return in next year's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. There's a lot of intrigue surrounding the movie, especially as the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman - who passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer - means T'Challa's story has reached an abrupt and premature end in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel Studios hasn't recast the character, so it's unclear how the King of Wakanda's story will end and who will take over the mantle (everyone from Shuri to Kasper Cole has been rumoured).
During a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Bassett was asked what she could reveal about the sequel, and admitted to not really knowing what to expect due to multiple rewrites. "I don't know what it's going to look like at all. There have been about five incarnations of the script and I hear another one's coming."
This isn't a sign we should be worried, as it indicates that Ryan Coogler is doing everything he can to make sure Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is as good as the first instalment.
In the interview, Bassett made it clear she believes the movie will honour Boseman in a meaningful way. "Of course, with our dear king going on to glory, a lot of things had to be shifted and changed, so thankfully, Ryan [Coogler] and Joe Robert Cole, they're just such masterful storytellers that they've found a way into this world and hopefully it will be satisfying, I think, for the fans and it will be honorable of our Chad. We love our king."
It certainly sounds like the right approach is being taken to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Marvel Studios paying fitting tribute to Boseman and T'Challa's legacy is obviously a must. With so many movies and TV shows heading our way before this one, it could be a while before anything official is revealed, though we certainly hope that some news is shared sooner rather than later.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is set to be released on July 8, 2022.
