Black Widow marks Marvel Studios' long overdue return to theaters, and it's fair to say that the movie has kicked off the big screen side of Phase 4 in an explosive, exciting way.

This story may have been set in the past, but that doesn't mean we don't have plenty to talk about. In this recap and discussion for the movie, we run through the plot, highlighting the biggest moments and reveals, and sharing some insight into what those might mean for this movie and beyond.

Regardless of whether you've seen the movie and just want a refresher or are curious about what to expect when you check out Black Widow in theaters or at home this weekend, we have you covered.

So, to check out this breakdown in its entirety, simply click on the "Next" button down below!

9. Natasha Romanoff's Childhood

98we9we2123e

The movie kicks off by taking us back to Natasha's childhood, an area of her life we've never explored up until now. While she seems to have a happy life in America with her mother, father, and sister, it quickly becomes clear Nat is all too aware it's just a front and that the "family" are Russian operatives there on behalf of the Red Room.

After Red Guardian steals information from a local facility, they flee for a nearby private airstrip with S.H.I.E.L.D. (who we later learn are HYDRA) in hot pursuit, and make their escape.

Meeting with Dreykov, Natasha and Yelena - who knows nothing of this deception - are separated and taken back to the Red Room to be trained as Widows. The movie delivers a tragic take on the hero's past, and one that shows just how much she went through before joining S.H.I.E.L.D. and becoming a member of Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

8. On The Run And The Movie's MacGuffin

98we9we2123e2

In the present (well, past), we pick up with Black Widow tricking General Ross and going on the run. Thanks to some help from an old ally, Mason, Nat finds a good place to hide out after breaking the Sokovia Accords and seems content to move on from her time as an Avenger.

Elsewhere, Yelena - now one of the Red Room's Widows - pursues a woman but is exposed to a mysterious red mist. That breaks her free of the shady organisation's control, and she goes on the run with the vials before sending them to Natasha. Heading into town for gas, the former Avenger is attacked by Taskmaster but manages to flee and again goes on the run.

The two women meet up in Budapest, and after a brief scrap, escape the clutches of both Taskmaster and the other Widows.

7. Recruited By S.H.I.E.L.D.

98we9we2123e21

Learning from Yelena that Dreykov is very much alive, Natasha recalls that her final mission when she decided to defect from the Red Room to S.H.I.E.L.D. involved blowing up the villain. However, to do so, she had to wait until his daughter visited as that was the only way to confirm he was there.

This explains the reference to "Dreykov's daughter" in The Avengers when Loki taunted Black Widow about the red on her ledger, and Nat later explains that it took her and Hawkeye several days to escape Budapest.

That's as much as we see of the mission, unfortunately, and it's definitely not the flashback many fans were likely hoping for. Regardless, now aware that Dreykov is still alive, Natasha and Yelena agree to team up to put an end to him and the Red Room once and for all.

6. Prison Break

98we9we2123e213

Acquiring a helicopter from Mason, Natasha and Yelena break Red Guardian out of a gulag. Dreykov sent him there for reasons which aren't entirely clear, and it's apparent that - despite being proud of his daughters (an Avenger and the Red Room's youngest assassin) - he's not exactly the best "father."

Following this action-packed sequel, the trio tracks down Melina and learn that whereas Natasha was influenced and brainwashed in a "normal" way during her training, Yelena and the current generation of Widows are being impacted with tech that means Dreykov has full control over them.

The red gas we mentioned earlier is the only way to free them, but can this dysfunctional family put their differences aside to bring down the Red Room once and for all?

5. Melina's Betrayal

98we9we2123e2131

Taskmaster and Dreykov's men arrive, and we learn that Melina has betrayed the rest of her family. With that, we're taken to the Red Room, a Helicarrier-like floating base that means the villain can constantly stay on the move and avoid capture.

With Yelena, Natasha, and Alexei all imprisoned, Melina meets with Dreykov...who quickly realises that he's speaking to Natasha. Melina didn't really betray them and actually hatched the plan with Black Widow. While the others break free, Natasha tries and fails to kill Dreykov, but can't do it because of a failsafe that stops his Widows from harming.

He reveals that he's created an entire army of Widows across the world, and proceeds to introduce Natasha to his greatest weapon: Taskmaster...

4. Dreykov's Daughter

98we9we2123e21312

Removing Taskmaster's mask, we learn that he is, in fact, a she. It's Dreykov's daughter (played by Olga Kurylenko). Like her father, she escaped that explosion but was left badly scarred.

Fully under her father's control thanks to Melina's tech, Taskmaster is sent to deal with the escapees, and it's then Natasha proceeds to break her nose so she no longer smells Dreykov's pheromones and can kill him. Before she succeeds, the other Widows arrive, but a timely intervention from Yelena means they're all freed from the villain's control.

Taking the final vial, Natasha flees the now exploding base and watches as Yelena blows up Dreykov's helicopter, killing him before she falls from the base. Nat saves her, but after also helping Taskmaster escape, she has some problems of her own!

3. The Final Battle

98we9we2123e2131222

The final battle with Taskmaster doesn't last particularly long and when they crash to the ground, hitting the villain with the concoction in that vial frees her from her father's control. She doesn't want to take revenge on Black Widow and instead seems happy to learn that he's finally dead.

As General Ross and his men approach, Yelena, Melina, and Red Guardian bid Natasha an emotional farewell and vow to free the rest of the Widows still under the Red Room's control.

They take Taskmaster and the rest of the no longer brainwashed survivors from the Red Room with them, and that's where their story ends. As for Natasha, it appears a confrontation with Ross is inevitable. Unfortunately, it's then that things take something of a bizarre turn.

2. A Baffling Ending

98we9we2123e213122

As Black Widow stands there waiting to be arrested, we immediately jump to two weeks in the future and see Natasha meet with Mason - now rocking her Avengers: Infinity War costume and hairstyle - as she vows to help break the rest of The Avengers out of The Raft.

He has a Quinjet for her, so that explains that, but what happened with Ross? We never find out. It's possible she could have made a deal with him (she did just take out the Red Room), but this feels like a noteworthy plot hole, and it's strange that Marvel Studios didn't at least reference how she managed to escape...yet still ended up being considered a fugitive!

Learning that she was instrumental in helping the likes of Ant-Man and the Scarlet Witch escape from The Raft means Natasha was clearly with Steve in those scenes right at the end of Civil War.

1. The Post-Credits Scene

98we9we2123e21312223

Black Widow has only one post-credits scene, and that comes right at the very end of them.

In it, we find an emotional Yelena visiting Natasha's grave in the Midwest. An obnoxious sniffing nearby reveals Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (she's suffering from allergies, not the sadness of the moment). The two women clearly have a history, but Val thinks she has a job that will definitely interest the former Red Room operative.

She wants Yelena to take out Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye. It seems Nat's sister is under the impression that her death was his fault, so this is very much "To Be Continued..." in Disney+'s Hawkeye...

I *liked* the movie, but I really felt when it was released was an injustice for it. I honesty feel if it was released between civil war and infinity war it would have been better. It would have even made the endgame fight for the soul stone feel like it had more weight. Because we knew the endgame (pun intended) it felt like there were no stakes. Not to mention the silent taskmaster was too much like Malaketh where I just didn’t care.

I also think I would have appreciated the film better last year when it was scheduled to come out, but now that I have seen what can be done with the D+ shows, I wish this was done as a six part series. These characters needed time to breath, backstories needed to be fleshed out.

Russia made a functional super solider in the 80s but the US could only come up with the Hulk in the 2000s? Red Guardian clearly thinks he battled Captain America (it's one thing to lie to prisoners, something else to say it to Natasha) … as we learned in FatWS there were other American Super Soldiers… who did he fight? Or were these implanted memories?

Give me an entire 45 minute episode of the “parents in their prime” in Ohio stealing from Shield/Hydra.

Show me taskmaster actually learning and reacting. BARF technology where she is line up with the a ghost of who she is mimicking (like Mario kart style)

Don't show us something and then drop the ball and never bring it back up. Looking at you iPig tablet. It's one thing to be a red herring, it's something else to waste time in a film that doesn't do enough with the time it had.

A good Villain thinks they are the hero. (See Thanos, Killmonger, Cottonmouth, Kingpin, even Karli). Show me Drakoff actually doing something, Don't give me a villain this1-dimensinal as the kick-off to Phase 4.

This should have been character driven dive into the psyche of how Natasha became the character we know, but to do that it needed more time.

''then Natasha proceeds to break her nose so she no longer smells Dreykov's pheromones''

I probably have to watch the movie for this to make sense, but right now this feels like a glaring oversight on Dreykov's part.

I really like this movie, I’d say it was my second favorite solo movie right behind Winter Soldier. I had some issues here and there especially with the end and the villain but I though it was great. It’s brutal, it’s funny, it’s a well done spy movie, but most surprisingly IMO is that the core of the movie is about family trauma and confronting abusers and that stuff really carried the movie for me.

It also I think lends a lot more weight and context to the more open and vulnerable Natasha we see in Endgame that willing to make the sacrifice that she does having closed the book on her ledger that makes me wish this had come out before that. I’m glad to have the MCU back and can’t wait for more

I felt like I wanted to see Black Widow and Taskmaster fight more but Taskmaster washed her so bad the first time I don't know what I was really expecting to see lol.

Also, that Budapest shit was dark as HELL. This movie really showed how crappy of a person survivalist Widow was back before Iron Man 2. I'd read someone say this movie went a long way in absolving people of past wrongdoings (as a criticism) and I really don't know how you see that in this movie. They were pretty unapologetic about everyone except Yelena being pretty awful at one point or another

@OmegaDaGrodd - Yeah I don’t see that either. It was more about confronting trauma and trying to own up to bad actions and break the cycle than atoning for them.

The action in this was BATSHIT, possibly the best in the entire MCU? Good lord. This was surprisingly dark and sad and brutal! The score is dope. A great acting showcase for Johansson and Pugh as Yelena in this will go down as one of the strongest character debuts in cbm history. Damn, I fall in love with her a little more each time I watch her act. Ray Winstone!!!

I definitely wanna see more of Shortland in the franchise, she has great style! Sure, not every choice she made was my cup of tea but they definitely didn't go unnoticed. She really did craft a thrilling spy action flick. It has its own distinct tone and identity. That opening sequence was like out of a horror film at times. The dynamics between the characters, especially Nat and Yelena! Some real tight storytelling and the humor worked almost perfectly and was mostly placed at all the right moments. Didn't notice that much weird green screen shit this time around. I'm sure some dudes will complain about how men are depicted in this film AGAIN but been there done that.

Onto the things that I didn't like; for a film that has opening credits tell part of its story, almost as in to avoid exposition, it still goes out of its way in many instances to deliver exposition, which I found weird. Another thing is that the heroes are never once outsmarted in this whole thing, or even genuinely taken by surprise. They have studied their foes' moves and know every little detail about what they're dealing with, which makes sense, but when the film keeps trying to trick you into thinking that the danger and suspense is real, seconds later you get a flashback sequence showing you how they've prepared for it in advance. That got tiresome after a point and I felt like it happened again and again in the final act.

Anyway, I adore women. ALSO, THEM EARRINGS IN THIS FILM. This is probably 4 stars out of 5 or somethin. A B+ maybe if I were to grade it? I dunno. Would rank around the middle of the MCU.

Hawkeye about to be real interesting.

This should've been a Disney+ show. I could easily imagine the ideas and these characters occupying 6 hours of television. This story needed more fleshing out imo. As a movie, its about 3-5 years too late. Should've came right after Civil War.

It was a solid movie. I really enjoyed "The Americans" first act. Everything with Yelena and Alexei was great and they stole the film. But movie wrapped to quickly and the final act felt rushed. Nothing in particular is memorable besides Yelena and Alexei.

The action was great when CGI wasn't involved. The fights here hit harder than TWS in some ways. You really felt every hit. Great score as well.

I think in a show Dreykov could've made for a more impactful villain and not just a cartoon like he was here. Winstone and Scarlett have great chemistry though and their scenes hit pretty hard. It got darker than I expected. You like to watch MCU films and scenes pop up now where you feel like you're watching something else almost.

She'll bring a nice spunk to the Widow mantle

Wtf??? How did I end up loving this film?!?!
Tbh the trailers looked really bad to me and I went into it thinking that I was gonna be bored super quickly, but I ended up loving the characters and getting emotional at times. I'm super happy with how it turned out.
Honestly, I would rate this 4.5 out of 5.

Florence Pugh is the next Merryl Streep, prove me wrong. It was a blast watching it on opening night with a packed audience! I miss the feeling, and it's back baby.

Black Widow is 6/10 for me. Sorry, it's just very dissapointing. Loki Episode 5 alone was so much better than this long awaited movie. 2nd to 3rd act just doesn't do it. Does anyone find it super cringe when it comes to Dreykov's line about "girls" or it just me? Yikes. I feel like it would work best as Disney+ show. It's funny to me that the enemy of MCU Cinema moving forward is not DC or anything, but their own shows. Same budget only with more time to give more stories, layers, and character developments.

Jeez those accents were annoying. They are spies who were living "The Americans" style in the us. They spoke perfect english in the US. When they are back amongst themselves in Russia, they should either be speaking Russian or the same relatively perfect english. There is no reason whatsoever for them to be speaking broken English with extremely inconsistent accents, especially from the incomparable Rachel Weisz.

Underwhelmed by this movie. After SOO LONG without a new movie from Marvel Studios--i figured I would be thankful and enjoy it no matter what. While its not as bad as IM2,IM3,TDW...it didnt scratch the itch as much as the Disney+ shows have. They have been just outstanding.

Gotta say all this waiting and hype for the movie i was a bit let down. I'd give it a 3/5*. Didn't like the beginning, (whats with the blue hair? and the kid who i honestly couldn't tell if it was a boy or girl) The way too far fetched scenes (car blown up & major car crash and they are JUST FINE) I know this is a movie but come on... And i was VERY let down by taskmaster, turned out to be a lesser villain than i thought. Was disappointed, i was hoping to see nat try to figure out a way to beat the guy(or should i say girl) who can copy every ones moves.

Idk maybe i'm just having a bad day but that was not a very entertaining movie, especially after all this time waiting. Suppose i like seeing her with the avengers better.. or cap... hehe

And i did see 2 people walk out of the movie when if was about half way through..

7.5 out of 10. I really felt for Yelena, Florence Pugh is top notch. The action in the movie is some of the best in the MCU. It's some of the moments in between the action that drags and brings the movie down for me (Natasha and Dreykov interaction in the Red Room was too drawn out). The Taskmaster reveal didn't stick the landing for me either. That being said I recommended it to my fellow filmgoers, I enjoyed it and had a good time overall
