BLACK ADAM Producer Teases A New Take On The DCEU And A Possible Future Crossover With Wonder Woman

Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia teases a very different take on the DCEU in the movie, while also hinting at a big screen reunion for Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) somewhere down the line.

We've been hearing a lot about Black Adam's title character changing the hierarchy of the DC Extended Universe, and at the premiere of Red Notice, producer Hiram Garcia dropped some exciting teases about what fans can expect. Confirming that he's seen the first cut of the movie, the filmmaker noted, "[it's] big and it's a lot of fun...it's got a lot of edge to it, and I think the world is ready."

"When we do something like this, we're looking at the entire DC Universe as a whole because with our movie, not only do we introduce Black Adam, but we introduce several characters," Garcia added, referencing the Justice Society. "We have great ambitions and plans for what we want to do in the DC Universe, and we're starting to work on that now as we start to roll out that plan."

In Red Notice, Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson shares the screen with Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot. Asked whether their DC characters could one day cross paths, the producer seemed confident they could make it happen somewhere down the line.

"We gotta see them together somehow, so we're working on it," Garcia teased. "Wonder Woman and Black Adam sharing the screen would be pretty awesome, and I honestly feel like Wonder Woman is one of the few superheroes that can go toe-to-toe with Black Adam."

This team-up (or clash) would be quite the sight to behold, though we'd bet on Black Adam meeting Shazam before other heroes from the DCEU cross his path. Superman is the character fans most want to see alongside Johnson's anti-hero, but that's looking increasingly unlikely with Henry Cavill seemingly done with the Man of Steel after talks with Warner Bros. broke down.

Black Adam is set to be released in theaters on July 29, 2022.

@MeAreLegend - DCEU is going to be more like Olympus/Greek Gods rather than superheroes in tights like MCU. Very odd and unexpected from DC. I can see why Batman world is seemingly getting written out now lol. I want to see DC heroes but it seems like they are giving us DC gods instead. I'm fine with it though, at least its different.

@mastakilla39 - I just wish we could have all of the characters in one proper universe. What I would give to see the classic Batman/Superman friendship in live action... I like the greek gods angle too (especially after norse mythology with Thor, this should be pretty fresh and interesting)

I think it would be cool if they made a cross-over movie with characters from that corner of the universe. Maybe Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Shazam, Black Adam and some more of those characters team up to stop Kronos after he escapes Tartarus

@heyy1 - could be. Or a Justice Society if they add Dr. Fate, Hawkman and Hawkwoman (although I rather have a real JSA movie).

@bkmeijer - yeah, DC should make a team movie with the successful heroes that fans liked.

@BlackBeltJones - But in the comics she was the 1st superhero ever, DC written that into canon last year. She created every team since the beginning of time or inspired all meta humans including Supes to become heroes.

As someone who grew up loving DC Comics, I'm saddened by how convoluted their cinematic universe has become. Marvel created an expectation, and unfortunately WB failed to capture and sustain anything similar to it.

@Mansuper - No doubt. DCEU has made me hate characters I love and Marvel has made me love characters I hate or barely knew existed.

@Waddles - I agree and disagree with that assessment, Waddles. I agree inasmuch as most of the characters weren't earned in BvS. I'm actually okay with the "Old Man Batman" idea. Because the end result of 20 years as Batman in Gotham City would in fact turn Bruce Wayne into the Batman we saw. I'd rather though it have been SUPER clear that it was Jason Todd that was killed instead of Dick Grayson. The whole "shock value" of it being Dick and the "shock value" of Jimmy Olsen being a spy who is immediately killed off, both seemed out of nowhere and unearned. Same way with Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg. Completely unearned and shoehorned in, as you said. On the other hand, I am of the minority who think Wonder Woman was COMPLETELY earned in the way they put her in the movie. Most will say she was the best part of BvS and I agree with that. But some will say she was unearned. I disagree with that. She was awesome in every way. (But as you know, I'm biased.)

Should they all have had their own movies before the big team up? Absolutely. But then again, having seen ZSJL it makes total sense they all show up at the same time. Is it unearned? Yep. But it makes sense in the context of the movie.

I can go on and on about this but I'll end with this: The reason why the DCEU is such a mess right now is WB honestly has no idea what to do now that Zack Snyder is gone. They want movies that easily clear a billion dollars each time. But they don't know how to do it. They don't have a visionary like Feige onboard that can properly steer the ship. So they just make stand alone movies and put most of them on HBO Max.

And like you, I am SUCH a DC fan. I almost exclusively read DC comics. So it pains me to no end to see things happening this way.

@Waddles - Okay then I have a question for you. If we're gonna go with a Bat family kind of thing (which I could totally be on board with, btw) do we need to roll out the characters one by one in their own "origin" stories which brings them into the Batfamily fold? Or do we throw them all into one movie? Keep in mind we're both of the same mind when it comes to "earned" vs "unearned" characters and overstuffing movies with unnecessary characters. If we agree they should have their own stories to allow each character to have some breathing room, because there are SO MANY people in the Batfamily (at last count there's close to 20 of 'em) I say it should be an ongoing series on HBOMax. UNLESS! We get to pick and choose which members we're gonna allow in the Batfamily and which we're going to ignore in this particular universe. If we keep it to a core 5 or 6 people, (Batman, Nightwing, Robin, Red Hood, Batgirl, and Batwoman, which doesn't include peripheral allies like Catwoman or Riddler) even then I feel like it would need to be either an ongoing series on HBOMax or 5 or 6 standalone movies on HBOMax that brings them individually into the fold. How do you see a Batfamily universe playing out?

They were hyping Black Adam to be able to take on superman, so why Wonder Woman have a chance against him?

So what happened to Black Adam vs Superman ? Or did WB completely kill any chance of that happening thanks to the Flash movie.

Four (and counting the Snyder Cut Five) movies later and I have almost no idea how powerful I'm supposed to think Wonder Woman is, let alone what her actual powers are

I'd rather see him and Shazam! first. Then maybe him and Superman. Then maybe him and Wonder Woman. But to have him and Wonder Woman before him and Shazam! is a terrible idea. But then again, we're talking WB here.
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 11/4/2021, 9:24 AM
@BecauseICare - they could even do that all in one movie. First he defeats Shazam, which leads Shazam to going to Superman, who also has a hard time with Black Adam, so then they bring in Wonder Woman and the three defeat him.
BecauseICare
BecauseICare - 11/4/2021, 9:34 AM
@bkmeijer - I like that idea too! They kinda sorta even already did that really. I can't remember which DCAU animated feature it was but basically it was Black Adam fighting Shazam. Once Shazam gets his *ss handed to him, Superman steps in and they both ultimately defeat Black Adam. Wonder Woman was nowhere to be found, but the point still remains. This was done in animation and it worked. Worked really well, in fact. So there's no reason why it can't happen in live action. But once again, we're talking WB here.

bkmeijer2 - 11/4/2021, 9:38 AM
@BecauseICare - yeah I think it was the Superman/Shazam short movie (''short'', it was still an hour lol).

I'd have a hard time believing Superman can't deal with Black Adam though, so maybe the order should be Shazam > Wonder Woman > Superman.

@AmazingFILMporg - Please explain how DC movies with characters played by actors that appear in more than one movie is not connected. Just bc they don't make it blatantly obvious like the MCU, doesn't mean it's not connected. The real shame is that you can't understand bc u have some kind of bias.
